Lord of the Rings Nazgul Impressions

This is taken from my post over at http://maximumpixelation.com/2012/06/05/lord-of-the-rings-na...

First a little disclosure this is not a review of the game. As you may know we have certain criteria for reviews on games. First we need to play it 5 times and more importantly the person doing the review has to be the one who owns the game. They need to read the rules, teach it and then after each play make sure we’re doing things right. In this particular case I have only played someone else copy once twice. It doesn’t look like I will be able to secure a review copy of this one either. This isn’t usually an issue because 90% of the games we review we buy. Having played Lord of the Rings Nazgul I can tell you it’s unlikely I would purchase this game soley for the purpose of reviewing it.

The reason I am doing an impressions post is oddly enough there is a lack of information on this game. It just released lastweek but there is only one review I can find of it and save for some sneak peaks by a person WizKids asks to do those things there is not much else.

I’ve been very excited about this game since last years GenCon for a few reasons.

One it’s a semi-cooperative game and those are usually fun.
It’s Lord of the Rings
You’re playing Nazgul hunting a hobbit
Starfleet Captains and Mage Knight are two of my favorite games from last year. SFC might be in my top 5 favorite games of all time at this point.
Nazgul is another one in the growing trends of board games to blend what some call Ameritrash games with Euro games. Sometimes that is done with success and others with mixed results. In this game you play one Nazgul which are represented by some very nice clix figures. You’re job is to visiting various locations on the board which are broken into 3 campaigns and beat them. If you can beat them all before the ring bearer gets to Mount Doom (9 turns give or take) and you can find him at Mount Doom (silliest mechanic for an end game ever in my opinion) then the Nazgul win, if not you all lose.

Along the way you incur favor, the games currency for bidding and buying forces and victory points. If you manage to win as a team the Nazgul with the most victory points wins the game. Apparently there is a fully cooperative variant but we didn’t play or go over that.

Each Nazgul has a few ratings on his base.

Terror which can be used to scare the free people if there are not high level heroes in the location to inspire them. By scaring these people you put less of their (blue) cubes in the cup.
Damage which is how much damage your Nazgul can inflict if you pull his Nazgul die out of the cup.
Armies which is the number or armies (orcs, trolls, Mamukil…the elephant things) you can add to the cup assuming you control that many.
Tactics the number of die you may pull from the cup. You never need to pull the full number but you need to announce how many you will pull.
Each turn the player as a Nazgul is using favor to bid on various things such as power cards (these are good), increasing your clicks, controlling the witch king and a few others. Some of these items everyone can cash in on. For example power cards the top bidder gets to draw 3 cards and keep 2, the 2nd place 2 and 1 and everyone else gets one card. Others like the witch king go to the highest bidder and everyone else is shit out of luck.

After all the bidding and collecting of benefits, purchasing of troops which by the way are represented by a cube on a player track. You then commit your Nazgul to a location or a mission. Each turn missions are turned up that if you don’t undertake usually lead to a location being buffed. For the most part whether it’s a location or mission you’ll be facing heroes and these guys have 3 important traits. Valor which reduces your terror, damage which is how much damage they inflict if you don’t kill them and hit points which is how much they can take. They also have a rank, the lower the better. So for example Gimely might be rank 6 but some rider of Rohan might be 37.

Rank is simply a quick way to let you know how bad ass they are. Most important heroes have special abilities that come into play. Some might increase the damage the free people do while others might call in new heroes. When you go to a location or a quest you’re basically determining how many cubes each side is putting in.

For example lets say I visit a location and it has 4 free people (blue cubes) and 2 heroes (white cubes.) I then commit 2 hero cards to that location. For sake of these impressions I am going to skip how this is done but in short you can pick ones you can see of draw from the deck. In this example lets say I am attacking alone (bad idea) my terror is 2 and the heroes have a combined 3 valor. My terror does nothing to the free people their will to fight is inspired. So 4 blue cubes go into the cup along with 2 white cubes. I put in my one Nazgul cube and lets say I can commit 4 armies. I put in 3 troll cubes and an orc. So now their are 6 enemy cubes and 5 of my own. Lets say my tactics is 3. I can now draw up to 3 cubes. I then deal out hits, in this example I need 4 points of damage to kill the free people and then however many hit points both heroes have.

In short you’re calculating odds and damage you can deliver. You tend to draw random hero cards a lot so you’ll be surprised often and end up facing more then you can handle. Aside from the bidding aspect, the secret quests for victory points the whole game is a calculation of odds and then pulling cubes from a cup.

I never had the feeling I was part of some over arching campaign. That what I did mattered down the road. You simply picked the spot that caused the most trouble or you had the best odds of winning and you tried to beat it. Rinse, repeat, Rinse , repeat.
