What/Where to Play? - Sunday, February 3, 2013

It's the middle of the week, so it's time to start talking about the next game session. We've got a couple of questions to hash out, such as:

* Where will we be playing?

* How many people will be attending (Kyle, this is mainly for you!)

* What does everyone want to play?

Talking with Collin the other night, we discussed the idea of going to Guardian Games again (20% off games!). Honestly, I wouldn't mind giving Furstenfeld another go!

Any input is welcome. Suggestions and player count will make it easier to decide which games to bring. I'll be giving my suggestions in the comments.

This Sunday, we'll be meeting at Guardian Games at our regular time. I'm considering getting there a little earlier in order to get us a good table and to scope out the games.

As with every week, we bring about the question of "What do we want to play?" Suggestions are appreciated and discussion on what we want to play or what we can play.

Discuss!

What to Play? (January 6, 2013)

Rather than confirming my assumed attendance I will RSVP by starting the discussion of what to bring and ultimately vote against when we actually play. In that vein I suggest someone bring BSG. I don't feel like dealing with the normal heavy bag so I'll be bringing smaller stuff this week. Hanabi, Chronicle, Incan Gold, Glory to Rome, Modern Art, PR and/or Princes, and Escape(only takes 10 minutes ). Along with Loopin Louis and Lee's box. This is already starting to sound heavy so the make up will likely change so as usual tell me if you actually care about something.

As always think about things like how you feel about learning new games, playing old, do we want to play Math: The Game?

What did you get in your package Kyle? Space Alert, Galaxy Trucker, and A:NR?

T'was a Couple of Days Before Christmas (What to Play? December 23, 2012)

T'was a Couple of Days Before Christmas
aka "What to Play? December 23, 2012"

So, Sunday will find us at Collin's place for gaming. Kyle will be with us for the second week in a row and Lee will be out-of-town (for most of the day). Unfortunately, Kyle has informed us that he may not be available to game for much longer. So, I'm going to suggest that we get in another game of Risk Legacy before that possibly (I'm still holding out hope that it doesn't) happens. Lee said that he'd be back in town on Sunday evening and he'd be available to play Risk once he gets back in. I'm all for it, if everyone else in up for it as well.

Other than that, is there anything else that everyone wants to play? We'll probably only be able to squeeze in one game of Risk Legacy and MAYBE something else afterwards when Lee gets in, but we'll have the rest of the time before that to get in some good gaming. We'll have four people available, so we have plenty of games that can be played.

As always, we should take into consideration the following:

1. Do I want to learn a new game?

2. Would I prefer to play games that we've already played?

3. I don't mind doing both.

4. I wouldn't mind playing something new, as long as it's not too complex.

5. Bring on the complexity! I want a meaty game!

The Legacy Continues (What to Play? December 16, 2012 )

The Legacy Continues
aka "What to Play? December 16, 2012"

So, this Sunday will bring about the second session of Risk Legacy. When we last left our New Earth, war broke out and our Generals left a lot of scars upon the land. A new major city, Gateway, was founded and the economy rose in a few different territories. This week, the Generals will go head-to-head once again. It'll be interesting to see which Factions are recruited by which Generals this time around.

Aside from knowing that we'll be playing Risk Legacy, there's also the question of what other games will be played. Now that we all know how to play Risk Legacy, the set-up, start, and play-through of this game session should go a lot smoother and quicker than last time. Just like before, we should take into consideration the following:

1. Do I want to learn a new game?

2. Would I prefer to play games that we've already played?

3. I don't mind doing both.

4. I wouldn't mind playing something new, as long as it's not too complex.

Any feedback is good as it'll help determine what games people will be bringing with them on Sunday.

What to Play? December 9, 2012

So, as Sunday creeps up on us, we come across the question of "which games do we want to play?" once again.

I think we should ask ourselves the following questions:

1. Do I want to learn a new game?

2. Would I prefer to play games that we've already played?

3. I don't mind doing both.

4. I wouldn't mind playing something new, as long as its not too complex.

Learning a new game cuts into playing time, with the more complex games taking longer to explain. So, chime in with your thoughts and possible suggestions of what you'd like to see hit the table on Sunday.

Taking Risks and Creating Legacies

Taking Risks and Creating Legacies
aka "Alfred, come down here and help me decide what games will be played."

I liked the idea of having a poll last time we discussed what to play next, but there ended up being too much outside feedback that really didn't reflect the feelings of the group. (Thus leading me to re-learn BSG inside and out just to not have it hit the table.) So, instead, let's talk a little bit about a game that we all know that WILL get played, Risk: Legacy.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent an email out asking everyone about what the general consensus was in playing a campaign game. I've been wanting to play Risk: Legacy ever since I heard about it, before it was released, and I also own Descent 2nd Edition, which I've played a couple of times, but never in a continuous campaign. With a now stable gaming group, I figured that this would be a good time to something arranged. The feedback on Risk: Legacy was pretty positive, so I made the purchase on Amazon. For the benefit of our readers, our group alternates between 4 and 5 players, with the occasional special guest. Since everyone was good with the game, we made the decision to hold sessions when we have 5 players playing, in order to fill the full compliment in the game. This Sunday will mark the first game session of Risk: Legacy.

I took the time to read over the rules of the game today, available here. The game isn't too complicated (it's Risk after all), but it sounds like it adds some tweaks that adds some spice to Vanilla Risk rules. It's not a long read and I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE everyone to read the rules and at least get familiar with the basic gameplay before Sunday. For those who want a clear understanding of the rules, there's always the Spoiler-Free FAQ located here on BGG.

To give you a taste of the world we're about to dive into:

In 2128, after years of global warfare, theoretical physicists
joined together with astronomers, engineers, and particle
physicists to announce a breathtaking breakthrough: the
ability to create new Earths.
Instead of warring over ever-scarcer resources and everdiminishing supplies, factions and populations could transport
to a verdant Earth, untouched by humans.
With great fanfare, the colonists departed for the first earth
clone created, ready to leave war behind.
It took two months for the first battle to take place.
It turns out that factions weren’t so ready to share, to give up
past grudges, or to forgive trespasses.
As future Earths were colonized, future wars followed.
You have one of these Earths. It is waiting for your story,
your wars. As of now there are no cities, no wars, even the
continents are unnamed.
But all that will change.
The wars will come.
They always do.
