I wanted to update everyone on some very exciting news. The artwork for Distant Lands has begun. Currently the artist is working on the icons that will accompany the unit flags on the counter. It is very exciting as the final pieces of the Manoeuvre puzzle are finally slotted into place.

As soon as I have news or better yet, images, I will pass them on.

The newest rules set for Manoeuvre and Distant Lands have been added to the Distant Lands P500 page:
http://www.gmtgames.com/mandistant/DLRulesv8.pdf

These rules add all of the new updates for the expansion as well as include the complete rules from the original. The entire game can be played from these rules and all of the clarifications and errata have been incorporated.

These will be the rules used for the upcoming Manoeuvre tournament at the Buckeye Game fest of Friday, September 13 and the Con on the Cob tournament on October 18.

The expansion is currently on pre-order at:

More news from the Buckeye Game Fest. I will be running a Manoeuvre tournament at the con on either Friday night or Saturday. The slots have yet to be announced but it will be one of those days. There is no extra cost to enter the event but this year we will be limiting the field to eight contestants. If you want one of those spots, I have special entry keys that are available on a first come basis. You will be able to pick up these keys with your badges at registration.

If you want to reserve a key, contact me on Facebook, BGG Mail or at jagrcz68@aol.com.

The tournament winner will get a custom-made "Manoeuvre" dice tower made by Scot Palenshus. Yes, one of those really nice ones. Hope to see some of you there and visit with you at the con.

So this was going to be another blog about some bit of minutia from Distant Lands but as I was warming up my ramen soup for lunch I had a pleasant thought. Next year I should have at least four games in print for the Buckeye Game Fest (maybe 5...) and with that many games I could probably reasonably put on some sort of event there. Now I do enjoy a good tournament on occasion and my main idea is to run tournaments of all of Carla's & my games at BGF and have a plaque at the con for best overall performance in all of the games. As a test run I will be establishing my own "track" at the BGF this year. Next year I will run events at Origins, GenCon, other locations to be announced and they will act as play-in events for the 2014 BGF.

For this year there will be one game in the "official" category and a handful of coming soon demonstration events.

Manoeuvre plus the Distant Lands expansion will be the main event and the winner of the tournament will be the first to get their name on the plaque. We will also hold demo events for Thunder Alley, Fury, Title Chase Basketball, Title Chase Football, 10-Second Cars, 20th Century Limited and Sagarmatha.

As the details begin to coalesce I will release more information.

Sweden in Manoeuvre

Sweden was introduced into the Distant Lands mix more as an oversight than as a "Distant" antagonist. While not a major power at the time, their location and heritage ensured that they would in fact play a part in the wars of Napoleon. Joe Roush took on this army along with the Indians and I feel that he did a very nice job with them. In the end they turned out to be an amalgamation of Prussian, Russian and Austrian styles of play. Their strength and card quality places them almost squarely in the middle of the European power structure and they can compete on any battlefield against any opponent with a chance to win.

What do they do well? The first thing you notice is that much like the Russians, they bleed off their counter strength slowly. So the flipped side of most of the units is not a steep drop from the full-strength side. As far as cards go, they get a lot of Volley cards and their leaders are quite up to par. Some of the units are a bit below average but no worse than the Austrians or Spanish. They also come with a wide array of HQ cards so they have the capability of pulling numerous tricks from their sleeve.

What do they do poorly? Well, for starters they have no "8" value unit to rely on as their anchor. The best they can muster is the Livgarde infantry and cavalry which are both 7/5's. Honestly, as I review the cards the only other thing they appear to struggle at is cavalry pursuit. Most of those rolls are 1-2 for a hit which is lower on average than many other nations.

Sweden will fit nicely into the heirarchy of the European powers. They will win their share and lose their share of games. As I look back I am glad we included the Americans in the original set for the unique qualities they brought to the game. But the Swedes clearly feel like they belong with the original European powers of Manoeuvre.
