I've had some contrasting experiences in my gaming recently.
Firstly, I've had no luck in getting to GM my weekly Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign over the last few weeks. In theory, we should have a session every Monday night, and I get irritated if we miss a session. We're now most of the way through the final chapter, Pathfinder #12: Crown of Fangs, and have only a handful of sessions to go before the campaign reaches its grand finale, so the irritation is even greater than normal. If we're missing one player, we usually carry on; any more than that and we tend to cancel. However, that rarely happens; normally if a session is cancelled, it's down to me, the GM.
Three Mondays ago, I was managing an urgent piece of work that had only come up the previous Friday, and involved working over the weekend. As well as working late on Monday (meaning I'd be very late for the game anyway), I hadn't found time to prep for the session, so I cancelled the game. The next Monday evening, I found myself doing some work into the evening to meet a deadline, a knock-on effect of the previous urgent assignment. It was also Valentine's Day, so spending some time with my wife (who hadn't seen much of me, with me working long hours) seemed like a good idea. Again, I postponed the RPG session.
Last Monday, I had the day off work, and it looked like nothing could prevent me from running the game. Then on Sunday I came down with a stinking cold, and by Monday night I was very tired, coughing and sneezing, and could only talk in a quiet croak. For the third week in a row, I had to let the players down.
Hopefully we can finally get the game back on track next week, but who knows what will happen before then!
However, my mood was significantly brightened by the fact that I got to play Go Away Monster! with my three-year-old daughter for the first time.
I'd heard about this being a great game for small children some time ago, but hadn't managed to track down a copy of it in the UK. A few weeks ago I contacted Shire Games, to see if they could get it in stock. It wasn't long before they confirmed that they could, and yesterday the game arrived at home.
I got the chance to play it with my wife and elder daughter last night, and it was an instant hit! My daughter quickly grasped the aim of the game, along with the concept of turn order. She was also very enthusiastic about throwing the monsters into the box and shouting "Go Away Monster!" As soon as we'd finished the game, she wanted to play again, and who was I to argue? We played twice more today, and I can see this being a favourite activity for some time to come. I just wonder when her 18-month-old sister will be old enough to play?
As well as ordering one copy for my own family, I ordered two more for friends with similar-aged children, to use as birthday gifts. Hopefully they'll enjoy it as much as we did!

As a gentle introduction to my blog (both for me, and for any hapless victims who find themselves reading it) I thought I'd explain where my nickname and avatar come from.
My username 'parrais' is taken directly from one of the pre-generated PCs in the AD&D module WGR6: The City of Skulls (you can see an excerpt over on the right). I remember playing the module back in the mid-90s, but I have no idea if I played that character as written, or if I just borrowed the name for my own PC.
Not long after that, I discovered the internet for the first time, and pretty soon had my first experience of MUDs. When asked for a name for my first MUD character, I displayed now-characteristic lack of imagination and named him 'parrais'.
I started using the name more and more online, most notable when I got interested in Quake. I was hooked on the game (and spent far too much time playing it when I was at university) and got involved in the UK clan scene. Enough time spent hanging around on IRC and other people started shortening 'parrais' ("how do you pronounce that anyway?") to 'paz'. Unfortunately, when I signed up at BGG, it didn't accept three-character usernames, so I used the longer version. Luckily, geek blogs do allow shorter bylines!
My usual avatar (which can be seen on the left) is currently on holiday. It's Domo, a mascot for a Japanese TV channel. I didn't have a deep reason for picking it, I just liked the look of it. It's fearsome yet non-threatening, and Japanese stuff is cool, right? I'm sure it will return eventually.
I've had a few different avatars lately (including Kwazii from the kids TV programme Octonauts); the one I'm currently using is the symbol of Lamashtu, the goddess of monsters on Golarion. I use a version of it over on the Paizo messageboards, simply because it's the most striking avatar of those available to choose from. I'll probably keep it for a while before trying something new.
That's pretty much the whole story when it comes to my online persona. I'm still not entirely sure what I'm going to do with this blog, but my general plan is just to use it to capture my thoughts on what I'm doing (or want to do) in terms of RPG Geek and gaming in general. Let's see how it goes.
