Nürnberg 2011: Pics of the Queen Games line-up

(In this Nürnberg 2011 report from Feb. 3, 2011, Rob Harris ran down what to expect from Queen Games in 2011. Rob has now sent photos from the show, so I'm reprinting that section below with photos in place a few extra details gleaned from the images to give you a better idea of what to expect in the months ahead. —WEM)

These are all 2011 releases from Queen Games without specific release dates, and yes, the descriptions are sketchy for many of these. The titles are:

Castelli, by Günter Burkhardt – nothing else known at this time.

Fresco: The Glaziers, by Marco Ruskowski, Marcel Süßelbeck and Wolfgang Panning – this expansion box, which was released in January 2011 in North America and is also available in Europe, consists of modules 4-6 for the Spiel des Jahres-nominated Fresco, with players being able to mix-and-match these modules with any in the base game, in addition to using them individually. (2-4 players, 10+, 60-90 minutes)

German Railways (1832-1872), by Harry Wu – a new edition of Winsome Games' Preußische Ostbahn, a railway game through German history. (3-5 players, 12+, 60 minutes)

Kairo – players build a stall in Cairo's bustling marketplace in order to attract customers and sell wares. (2-4 players, 10+, 60 minutes)

Lancaster, by Matthias Cramer – players are English lords who are supporting the King during his conflict with France, while simultaneously trying to build castles for themselves and increase their influence in Parliament. (2-5 players, 10+, 60 minutes)

Res Publica, by Reiner Knizia – a trading game that's been published previously by Queen Games and others. This will be a new version of the game, with new artwork and some rule changes. (3-5 players, 10+, 30 minutes)

Show Manager, by Dirk Henn – a new version of this set-collecting game (with new artwork) in which players are directors who need to assemble a good set of actors in order to put on four plays. (2-6 players, 10+, 60 minutes)

Thebes: The Card Game - The Tomb Raiders, by Peter Prinz – a card game based on Prinz' board game Thebes (2-4 players, 10+, 30 minutes)

With a bit of Res Publica and German Railways peeking into view

Looks like Castelli has casteeples! Is that a completely new game bit?

What's the deal with Show Manager? Just because the original was ugly the new version has to be ugly too?

Yup. Rules is rules.

What I find more amazing is that Queen's insane box experiment has apparently ended. Those almost all look like standard square boxes to me!

For serious. I'll even say the new one is uglier. At least the caricatures in the old one had a style to them... still, won't stop me from getting a copy of the new one. It's still a great game, and Atlantic Star was no replacement for the original Show Manager.

I kind of liked the charicatures in the original Showmanager. The new pics aren't ugly, but quasi-realistic art never works as well as sketchy or cartoony figures, particularly when the human form is being drawn. Clearly, a lot of publishers disagree.

Tradition is served, though, as we continue to have strange names for the shows in the game--including the return of Queenie! Still, it's great to have Showmanager back in print again!

I continue to be in the minority dissenting opinion on that one. But not just because of the theme (which I couldn't really care less one way or the other about). It's primarily the additional cards in AS which make for a better card mix and also supports 6 players better. And secondarily the graphic design that ooks like it was done by someone who actually got paid for it.

But yeah, I'm also pleased that more people will be able to enjoy this great game, in some form or another.

My Queen Games games are for sale based purely on their oversized box size. The games are good, but I need the shelf space for twice as many games as I'm giving up. If they've gone for a smaller sized box (think Batavia in a box half the size), then I might have a space for Lancaster. It looks interesting so far and Matthias Cramer did a good job with Glen More.

That final pic, what's the game to the right of Thebes, is that an Alhambra Nederland edition? I notice the word Family down by the Queen logo - are they designating some games in a family line?

Not so fast, look at the German Railways box tilted sideways.

And while the Queen square boxes are considerably thinner, they are slightly thicker than their counterparts.

I may actually dump my old Avalanche Press copy of Res Publica, which looks like an earth elemental spit up all over it, even though the box is tiny (especially compared with anything from Queen). Great game, but incredibly ugly and muddy art.

I have the original Show Manager, and wish I'd kept Atlantic Star for the relatively smaller box, even though I love the Show Manager theme (and hate musical theater, ironically). I actually like it with six, haven't tried to play it with fewer than five before.

Not sure about the "family" designation, but Alhambra: The Card Game is being released in a few localized versions, with the Netherlands being one, Belgium being another, and New York being a third (although New York is not listed on the Queen Games website whereas the other two are).

Holy cats. You aren't kidding. That. Looks. Terrible.

Atlantic Star is one of my favorite games and I guess I should thank them because I don't feel compelled to pick up the new copy.

Don't get me wrong. Queen is easily my favorite publisher and they'll get lots of my nice monies just not on this.
