Bobby's Games

I will be posting monthly recaps of my gaming which I have been doing in GeekLists. I'll also be commenting on games on occasion, though I can tell you that I will be behind the curve because I just don't get to play the new games as soon as some people do.

I've been slacking on fun/non-work/non-chore stuff this past week. I finished this up yesterday and I forgot to post it, so here is my May recap...

I didn't make any headway in the different alea challenges, though I honestly didn't try as hard as I could have.

I played 33 different games a total of 54 times with six of them being new to me and 10 of them being games I played in April. I played six expansions a total of six times with two of them being new to me and two of them were played last month.

Here are the games I played in May.

7 Wonders
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/12

Expansion Played: Leaders.

We played two games using Nico's set. It's kind of odd mixing the wooden coins from the initial printings with the cardboard coins from Leaders. I'm glad I wasn't an initial adopter because the difference in the coins would drive me battier than I already am.

Bakschisch
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me

The object of the game is to be at the end of the score track after a round, with ties being broken by who has the most coins left over.

The shape of the track and the player pieces were incongruous with the Arabian Nights theme. Instead, it looked like moving poop through a bowel. Someone should re-theme it. I bet Ex-Lax would want to co-brand a printing, or two.

Castles of Burgundy
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/12

Michael and I played a two-player game and I was three animal tiles shy of filling up my entire board, which I thought was impressive.

City, The
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me

Michael grabbed an early lead and it looked like he would cruise to an easy win, but I built an 11-point building on the last turn and made it close. He still won. The group's reaction to the game is it is nothing special and I can't see anyone else buying a copy, nor asking to play it. Not that we would refuse to play it.

Commands & Colors Ancients
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played:

Mike and I played the Castulo scenario from the base game.

The goal is for the Romans to get Scipio and his army past the Carthaginians in the center of the board or the right flank, while they are trying to kill Scipio.

I played the Romans and started off maneuvering on the right side, trying to weaken the Carthaginians there. As is the case in these battles, things can get chaotic and the orders don't always go off without a hitch. After several turns of maneuvering, my best option was to marshal my limited cavalry to try and push through the Carthaginian lines. First, two of the three units charged into the fray on the left side, while the third made its way up the right side. Then the cavalry on the left made a dash between the lines of the two opposing armies and hit the softened right side which was followed by the third cavalry unit hitting the same area.

This weakened the enemy enough so that Scipio, flanked by the heavy infantry, was able to march in and decimate the remaining resistance and opened up a path for them to march on and meet up with the rest of the Roman forces.

Mike and I had played this back in 2006 and he won that battle, with the Romans, by two flags. This time I won by three flags with the Romans. I seemed to have more problems with my card choices during the game and the dice were not kind to him. I'd play this scenario again and believe either side has a chance of pulling out a victory.

Fabrik der Träume
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/07

I never felt like I got rolling in this game, but still managed a decent showing. I thought I had the worst movie sewn up near the end, but Michael, who was by far the best this game, snaked in and took it at the last moment.

I kept waiting for the Knizia guest star tile to show up and it never did. It was the only tile which didn't come up during the game.

Fantastiqa
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me

My first time playing this prototype.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/12

A game which looked like an easy win, but got tense near the end as the fires started exploding and the bedroom full of hazardous waste (three tokens) started to catch fire. We did manage to pull off the win, leaving the kitten cowering in the dining room.

Flowerpower
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 6/10

It was fun to get this out and to the table. I am still surprised that no one has published this again.

Hordes
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: New to me

My first time playing Hordes was a disaster for my poor Trollblood force. Mike and I played a Claw and Fang game and I was testing out a list that I thought might work in a tournament. The short story is it is not a tournament list, so I am going to try my Rhulic mercenaries out and see what happens.

Keltis: Das Kartenspiel
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me

Played twice with Mike and Hilary and then a bunch of times on Happy Meeple, which were two-player games against a computer opponent. I hate it with just two, but really like it with three. If I am going to play a two-player game, I will stick with Lost Cities.

Keltis: Das Würfelspiel
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 4/12

Keltis dice fun.

King of Tokyo
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 3/12

A couple of battles where the others had to cheat because I didn't win. Since the dice love me, it's the only way I wouldn't win.

Knights of Ten
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/12

I taught the game to Michael and I did surprisingly well, winning three of the four hands and the game, though he was beginning to grasp how to play by the last hand. This means I will likely not be besting him from this point on in this game. I guess I am the anti-Norwegian?

Mondo
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/12

Michael and I played this and I learned it was far more forgiving than how I was taught.

No, I don't remember the differences. That was weeks ago!

Nightfall: Coldest War
Times Played: 5
Last Month Played: 4/12

Expansion Played: Blood Country in two of the games.

Five games with Mike, with Blood Country added to the mix for the last two games.

Pandemic
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 7/11

Expansion Played: On the Brink.

Two two-player wins with Michael, and a three-player loss with Hilary and Mike.

Power Grid: First Sparks
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/12

I finally didn't win a game. I had a bad feeling about it early on in the game because of the tools that were available. I was right and didn't win.

Quarriors
Times Played: 3
Last Month Played: 4/12

Expansion Played: Rise of the Demons for all games.

Played the Thursday before Quarmageddon!!!!! I bet this gets between 10 and 20 plays next month.

In one of the games I managed to cull all my starting dice, which was fun.

Ra: The Dice Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 2/12

We played. Mike won. What else did you expect?

Race for the Galaxy
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 4/12

Expansion Played: The Gathering Storm for all of the games.

While I like it best with two players, I've reached the point that I am not enjoying it anywhere near as much as I used to when playing Michael. A couple of turns into most games, I already have a pretty good idea of how the game is going to finish and who is going to win.

Raj
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 6/06

Rick forgot how quick this played. Even explaining it and playing it twice, we might have spent all of 20 minutes playing it twice.

Revolver: The Wild West Gunfighting Game
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: New to me

A two-player game which has different decks and objectives for the different players. The law side is trying to eliminate the bad guys before they reach a certain point, and the outlaw side is trying to survive past that point, or win enough turns to end the game early. It's fun, but there are a lot of cards and it can be frustrating that one of any number of cards you need aren't coming up.

Since Mike owns it, I will not need to consider getting it, which I wouldn't since it comes in a tin. Tins are stupid.

Risiko Express
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 2/12

Nico has a homemade version of this which uses normal dice. It was a fairly typical game as he and Mike were fighting over Europe, and Nico ended up winning with me wondering why the heck I bothered to play?

Roll Through the Ages
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/12

We played. Mike won. The universe should have ended.

Saint Petersburg
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 3/12

Expansion Played: New Society.

We didn't use The Banquet part of the expansion because it sucks more than a black hole.

I started out our game very cash poor because I ended up buying the New Farmer card on the first turn and a Ship Builder on the second turn. I was able to recover and generate a huge amount of income by the middle of the game and ended up with an easy win against three others.

Mike thought the expansion dragged the game out, but I have liked it the couple of times I have got to play with it. I think it adds just enough cards to enhance the game without bloating it.

Snow Tails
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 12/11

A race where I was the only one not to take a dent, but it still wasn't enough to finish first.

Thunderstone
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 1/12

Expansions Played: All the available ones were in the mix for all the games.

One last game with the original set and expansions. I will be selling this off, I just need to find the right venue to be able to get what I think I should for it. ($1,000, anyone?)

Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 4/12

And one game with the new version.

Thurn and Taxis
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 8/11

Two-players. Michael won. Another "we should play this more" game.

Unpublished Prototype: I'm the Boss!: The Card Game
Times Played: 1
Last Month Played: 10/11

When I first played this back in October, I said, "A very early prototype card game. Needs work, but I bet it does get published at some point."

It is much further along at this point and I am sure it is going to be published. We did have some suggestions and it looks like one of mine is going to be used. It's really cool, considering the game.

Würfel Bohnanza
Times Played: 4
Last Month Played: 4/12

Still digging this game, though I need to focus more on the next task and not try to set myself up for multiples being completed. It's all-too-often that I can complete the next two tasks, but the current one can't be done so I waste a turn.

Zooloretto Würfelspiel
Times Played: 2
Last Month Played: 4/12

The lamination really works well for the score sheets, and it can be played twice before you have to erase anything since both sides of the sheet are printed.
