New Game Round-up: 7 Wonders: Leaders, Dixit: The Odyssey, Shogun & More

At this point I'm still feeling my way around the BGG News stage and figuring out the best way to do things. Let me know in the comments whether you prefer posts that include short descriptions of many new items (such as this post) or separate posts for each item. The goal, of course, is for everyone to find out about the games they might want to find out about, while not being burdened to read every fool thing I might post.

And now, on to a few tidbits about new or forthcoming games!

• Designer Antoine Bauza has posted info about 7 Wonders: Leaders, on display at the Nürnberg 2011 Toy Fair. The white-backed Leader cards are played at the start of each of the game's three ages, not mixed with the other cards, and they cost money to be played, not resources. The expansion will likely include 35 cards along with a new double-sided wonder.

Bauza also notes that in response to comments from buyers, the next print run of 7 Wonders will have a plastic insert instead of a cardboard one, and cardboard coins instead of wooden ones.

• In more news from Nürnberg 2011, French website Jedisjeux reports that Dixit has sold 350,000 copies so far and will be followed by a new standalone game from designer Jean-Louis Roubira titled Dixit: l'Odyssée. While the game will include new rule variants, including a team option that allows for up to ten players, the cards – once again bearing art from Mary Cardouat – can also be mixed with those in the base game and expansion.

• To confirm an earlier report of a new edition of Samurai Swords/Shogun coming down the pike, yes, the game will once again be available, this time from Avalon Hill. A January 27, 2011 press release announcing Pegasus Spiele as the distributor of Avalon Hill titles in Germany and Austria includes the game in a list of games to be distributed, albeit with the name Ikusa (and the clarifying note "formerly Shogun"). The game is listed at €65 with a publish date of June 26, 2011. Other titles forthcoming from the deal include Risk: 2210 A.D. (due April 2011) and Acquire (in late 2011).

Phalanx Games Polska is releasing Ted Raicer's The First World War in Polish in 2011 as Pierwsza Wojna Światowa. Here's a game description in Polish on the Phalanx website.

German rules for Reiner Knizia's BITS have been posted on the Ravensburger website.

• Alderac has posted English rules for Thunderstone: Dragonspire.

• In the "how much time does that take again" category, I present 18OE – On the Rails of the Orient Express, an 18xx design by Edward Sindelar that he plans to release in 2011. Look at that map! All those tiles! Eighteen major railroads! Seven national railraods! Your weekend will fall to its knees in submission...

*Happy dance!* I'm not sure there can ever be enough Dixit art/cards!

I enjoy these summaries of various news. Easier to read them when you don't have to open a new thread for ever item.

Thanks, Eric, for confirming the Shogun reprint.

As for your question, I prefer the "lots of news in one post" format, although it makes the comments and discussion less focused.

And while we are on it, why can't we "subscribe" to a news post to be notified of new comments ?
We can subscribe to the whole "news forum", but not to a specific post (unless I missed something )

That would be a question for the tech guys who handle such things. Probably something related to BGG News being a blog rather than the forums available elsewhere on BGG, but I'm blowing smoke at this point. I'll kick the question over to them...

Honestly, I loathe "Read More". I really don't care how long the page is. The whole, "Oh, noes! A wall of text!" bit--bah! My feeling is, either give me the whole article or just a title, maybe a teaser, and a link. Don't give me half the article and make me hunt for where I was when I follow the link. But this is my personal taste, and you're a far better judge of general tastes.

However, on old BGN I would use Firefox's Update Scanner on Gone Cardboard, and just get the titles of articles. That was fine: I followed the titles that interested me. I rarely went to the BGN front page, and then mostly to check the ads. I continue to use Update Scanner here, so I can tell the new from the old--and to remind me to read regularly so I don't get a huge backlog.

If you must have "Read More", a clear distinction must be made between single and multi-topic articles in the titles. No, "Oh, and by the way..." digressions in what is advertised as a single-topic article. I need to be able to have confidence that if I don't care about the teaser, I won't care about the rest of the article.

You asked.

It's great to have BGN back!

I got the impression that in order to balance the cost of having a plastic insert, they're changing to cardboard money.

I like it when all the games that only have a paragraph of content/update (and possibly a picture) are compiled in threads like this. Then you can make the longer posts about specific games really be game specific. If you have something like a publisher update where you have four games to mention, and a lot of depth on a fifth, just mention the fifth in the update with a simple sentence indicating there is an indepth article on it to come (or just posted).

The use of Read More... should imho either be consistently after the first paragraph of the article (where you outline that this article is either about Game X, Publisher Y, or an Assortment of News Updates. Or, just don't bother with it. Personally, I'll almost always click on it, so it just becomes another click hurdle to get to the content.

I see an option to "subscribe to blog post" here in this reply. Is that new, or is the issue not functionality but just an interface widget to allow you to do so without posting a reply?

Eric, these news blast are fine intermixed with more detailed previews and news items as it warrants it, as you had done on the former site. IF there is only something quick to whet people's appetite, why make it its own blog post? I get the comment here that the discussion could become less focused, but it hasn't been a problem yet in any of the posts from what I have seen.

As for the news items -- Samurai Swords release sounds awesome for those that do not own this fine game...I'll keep my grandmaster series Shogun. devil

It would be nice if Pegasus Spiele would release a version of Acquire with nice tall buildings in it, and further, it be carried over to a nicer US version.

Yay, Dragonspire!

I think the most obvious improvement was the awful quality of the card stock, but apparently that was not an issue for the publisher?

Adding a plastic insert that will likely not fit sleeved cards and will have no room for the expansion(s) in exchange for worse quality coins seems a lose-lose situation for the customers.

I also like the format of this and other recent posts. I suppose the difference would be if you have enough information for a long singleton then go for it, else this works great IMO.

Love the look of the new insert -- wasn't sure I would like the changes but they look good.

Also, what the heck is BITS doing? I can't figure it out. We're big FITS fans.

I like the format of the article. My only issue is that the RSS reader I'm using to follow the news cuts off after maybe 500 words and forces me to follow the link to the full article. It would be really nice if the first paragraph was a synopsis of the games being discussed.

Supposedly the wooden coins were the "pre-order bonus" for buying the game's first edition. Similar to the Z-Deck of Agricola.

It's a shame though because I love those chunky woody components and I'd much rather have no insert at all and get the wooden coins than have to settle for cardboard crap.

Buyers really requested more plastic waste that will have to be recycled or end up in the landfill?

p.s. why isn't there a "quote" option for the original post in these forums?

The cardboard coins is not so much of a problem as you could always use the FantasyFlightGames gaming tokens. I found out that the silver tokens are almost the same size and color as the wooden grey coins in 7 wonders. Just get 3 packs of FFG silver gaming tokens (total : 60 coins) and 1 pack of FFG gold gaming tokens (total : 20 coins), problem solved.

The 1st edition doesn't come with enough coins for a 7 player game anyways. I'm currently using the FFG silver coins to supplement the wooden ones found in the 1st printing.

Yea.. I re-reviewed the game and saw that there was really nothing special about them. I thought maybe they had some sort of unique design.

I could also use my Age of Empires III coins as well

On the BGG home page the BGG News articles used to show the date they were posted. This was helpful information that would be nice to see return.
