My boyfriend's birthday was yesterday. I started to plan his birthday gift well in advance because he surely is not the easiest person to give gifts to. He needs nothing and wants nothing! However, I wanted to give him something awesome as he is my awesome boyfriend... The only problem was that I got no ideas. Nada. So eventually I had to make a desperate visit to our local board game store Lautapelit.fi (it's their domain name too, and in English it's as simple as "boardgames.fi".

I have had very mixed experiences with Lautapelit.fi. Last Christmas I visited the store to find a present, again, for my boyfriend. A shop assistant asked me if I needed help. And I did because I had no clue what to give him and most of the games were unfamiliar to me.

So I said to him that I would like to find a game that works very well with two players, since I was going to play it with my boyfriend. I also said that it should be on the heavier side rather than the light side.

And the first game he showed to me was Zooloretto. Luckily it didn't wake my interest... because I read afterwards from here that the game is not even recommended for to players! Uh-oh. He showed me couple games more, but after he found out that I'm really not into war games, he gave up with helping me.

And then the hobbit boy came. I always call him hobbit boy because he kinda looks like one and he's not taller than me. Anyway. He showed me more than one game that actually sounded promising, and he introduced them to me really well too. He always told me what they're about and how to play them and also his personal opinions and experiences. And with him I quite quickly found what I was looking for.

That was the Christmas shopping experience.

After Christmas I visited the store again, this time with my boyfriend. I had told him earlier how good their service was when I was shopping the gift for him, how they helped me to find the kind of game I was looking for. But this time... no one even asked us if we need help, even though there were couple of shop assistants around. It was not a pleasant surprise after I had praised their service to my boyfriend. I even asked my boyfriend to hold the most expensive game they have in his hands and look interested but also a little bit puzzled. I thought that might spark some action but no.

That was the very disappointing experience.

The next time I visited the shop alone. I wanted to buy Alvin & Dexter expansion for Ticket to Ride. I was in a hurry, but still I had time to fall in love with their girl assistant; She was so adorable and sparkly, and she seemed to know about games too! I smiled all the way home just because she was so nice.

That was the "I fell in love with a girl but I'm not a lesbian" experience.

Recently we visited the store together again. There was only one person working at the time and he was too busy watching some geeks play that he didn't seem to acknowledge us at all. I thought he was way too busy minding his own business than doing his work well, really.

That was the "why not move your lazy ass to make some sale happening" experience.

And now to my latest experience: shopping a birthday gift to my boyfriend! I went to the store and the hobbit boy was working and he offered me help almost immediately. I had already spotted Loyang so I asked him some questions about it and then we discussed a little about the harvest trilogy. He said he would have recommended me Agricola, but I don't really need a recommendations for that; I know it's highly ranked and we will get it eventually. I wasn't there to pick up the best game ever, I was picking up a game my boyfriend would find at least a little bit surprising. Anyway. I was once again very pleased with the level of service he provided to me. He was nice, knowing, and he seemed to listen to me too.

The verdict:

I want to shop at Lautapelit.fi when the hobbit boy or the sparkly girl are working. They're awesome, the rest of them are... well, they just haven't really impressed me yet. It's a specialty shop, so I expect a certain level of service: I expect someone to offer me help and I expect that someone to know what he/she is talking about. I think it's not too much to ask for really. If I don't want service, I can just order online where the games are cheaper. When I'm shopping local, I am willing to pay for the service too... but only when I actually receive some!

Found your blog only because it was on the front page, but I'm glad I did as I enjoyed your writing style and could visualize what you went through. I've had similiar experiences too and now I wonder what my wife has had to go through getting some of my presents as shes gotten some like the first edition of Power Struggle before it was released in the states and other such surprises that I didnt' expect for presents.

Every time you go alone it's a good experience. I think all the employees (Miss Sparkle included) there have a crush on you.

A nice article about store employees -- I won't bore you with my most recent unpleasant shopping experience.

So what did you buy as a birthday present? Or do I need to wait for your next blog entry?

Haha but I know that the hobbit boy has a girlfriend! He told me that Small World is one of his girlfriend's favorite when he introduced the game to me last Christmas... or maybe he's just really good at selling?

But I wouldn't question it though. A girl enters a board game store alone. Geeks get excited. Sounds logical even?

Thank you! I really appreciate your compliment. (Why there is no heart emoticon when I want one?!) I have been blogging for over eight years and I think I have established a certain way of writing by now, and it's nice to know that people like my style. Though I don't if it's a "style", I think it's more like the way I am.

I don't know if I really should be telling this... It would be nice if you checked my blog again to find out what it was It was At the Gates of Loyang and I think I'm going to write some kind of a blog post about that too. I'm not sure yet thoug. We still haven't play it (we're going to after I've wrote this comment) and I don't know if writing any kind of reviews is my thing.

It is interesting that you got good, prompt service when you were on your own & minimal when the two of you were together. I'm wondering how much of an unconscious (or possibly concious) thought went on: A female on their own- must be in need of help, A couple in here together- must know what they're looking for.
Send your boyfriend in on his own & see what response he gets

Maybe we could even do a little research. There are three different board game stores close to us. We could co alone and together and compare the level of service we get

We recently visited some kind of a figure shop, I don't know what it was exactly, but there were bunch of geeks painting figures and stuff, and there was a girl assistant, but weirdly she only talked to my boyfriend. I didn't try to make any contact with her though, I was there only to accompany my boyfriend... but how could she have known why we were there? We could have been there looking for something for both of us. I don't like when people do suggestions based on my sex only... and she was a girl too!

It's an oil drum (metal barrel) from Power Grid. It's one of several fuels you buy in the game to run your power plants, the others being coal, trash, and nuclear. They are the icons used on the power plant cards, though differently colored:

Well, it's not just "a girl needs a help" -thing. I've visited Lautapelit.fi many times and sometimes shop assistants rush to help you almost immediately and sometimes not. But then again, many times I'm just fine with perusing the boxes by myself and many times I know what I want. But even on those occasions when nobody has come to ask me if I need help and I've needed one, when I've asked for help, they've helped.

I like to be offered help even when I know what I'm going to get. Like the last time: I had decided that I want Agricola if Loyang is not available. And since Loyang was available, I wanted that. But still I appreciated the help because I was able to ask questions from someone who had actually played it. The hobbit boy confirmed me that I was picking up the right game.

I think it's not the lack of service that bothers me, but the inconsistency: you get great service - you expect great service the next time too - you get no service = disappointment. They taught me that I can get great service so how could I expect anything less?

Anyway. I believe too that I would get help when asked.

I did pick Loyang, but I don't think I picked it over Agricola. Agricola is currently the only game in his wishlist (there are others but he ordered them online right before his birthday), so I thought it would be too obvious desperate gift. So I picked Loyang, the game he knew existed but what he didn't know much about. He wouldn't expect that as a gift like he could expect Agricola. And we are going to get Agricola too, they're not excluding each other

Great blog post. Fortunately for me, my FLGS (Travelling Man, Newcastle, UK for anyone who might know it) has great staff who are always welcoming and helpful when you ask about something. They don't pounce on people as soon as they come through the door though and if you want advice you mostly have to ask for it, but if you do it is very forthcoming. This is definitely something I appreciate, as I'm not a huge fan of entering a store and having the nearest person not only try to ram product down my throat, but also question my very existence in the store (you hearing me Games Workshop ).

Best thing about Travelling Man is entering the shop and immediately having one of the staff ask if I want my comic standing order and then being left to peruse the games shelves (my comics are even brought to me!).

Is Lautapelit as bad at translating games to Finnish as they are to Swedish? I shun their games because I have to get the English rules anyway.

I think we have only one translated Lautapelit.fi game, and that's Dominion. I have had no problems with the Finnish rules, but on the other hand, it's a simple game so the rules are easy to understand anyway. Maybe someone else has more experience with this issue?

We also have Ticket to Ride: Nordic countries, Finca and Thurn und Taxis by Lautapelit.fi, but I think we didn't have any problems with these either.
