Expansions, Part 4: Expansions? Who needs 'em!

First off, apologies to those of you who have been following this series and have been awaiting additional entries. We had some incredibly exciting and wonderful news in my family (check the microbadge ), but aside from that, this was a difficult entry to write. It's kind of a hodgepodge of ideas that were originally going to be stretched out over multiple blog entries, but none of them quite had enough material to stand on their own. On top of that, while writing it I began to wonder if I was undercutting my primary thesis in a couple of spots. Anyway, I hope this makes sense.

Now, onto the blog entry proper. In case you have been following this series (and thank you if you have), don't be scared by the title. The guy who is now on his fourth blog entry about board game expansions has not suddenly given up on them. I did, however, want to take some time to talk about situations where I've decided not to buy any expansions for a game my wife and I already own, or where I/we decided to pass on a game altogether due to having lots of expansions.

Games we own that I don't feel like collecting expansions for

Alhambra - we've only played Alhambra once, and we enjoyed it enough that if we ever get around to playing it regularly, it'll become kind of a "go-to" game. Still, it just doesn't strike me as a game that needs any additions, the way that Carcassonne needs Inns & Cathedrals (as an example). If we did, we would probably just buy the Big Box and get it over with. Luckily, we have friends who own that set, so hopefully we'll have a chance to try it out at some point.

Railroad Tycoon - this is a great game, and I hope to play it again soon. I just don't know how badly I need more maps for it. As noted in a previous entry, we've already hurtled down the slippery slope of Power Grid expansion maps, and I just don't know if I can do that for a second game, especially when I can get 2-3 PG maps for the cost of Rails of Europe.

A Touch of Evil: The Supernatural Game - one day, my wife and I were at a game store in Des Moines and wanted to buy something. It was between this and Ghost Stories, and we ended up going with AToE. We thought it looked like a nice "Arkham Horror lite" game for when we didn't quite have time for the "real thing". As it turns out, it's not that hard to find time for a game of AH. We intend to try this one again, but I just don't see us playing it often enough that we'll get bored with the content already in the box.

Games I'm not buying due to expansions

All FFG Living Card Games - A Game of Thrones is the one where this really hurts: my wife and I are huge fans of the novels and HBO series, and I'd love to be able to get a Westeros-themed gaming fix without having to recruit 3-4 other people and setting aside 3-4 hours to play the other one. Still, it's just gotten too unwieldy, too quickly. To a lesser extent, I'm also interested in Warhammer: Invasion, but I'm passing on that for many of the same reasons. And now there's The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, which is brand-new but appears to be headed down the same route (plus we already are obsessed with Knizia's game, so I don't feel like we're missing out on too much there). A friend of mine owns Call of Cthulhu, so I at least get to play that one.

Battles of Westeros - bitten again by my love for all things AGoT. This was announced not long after I'd decided to buy into BattleLore, and my first thought was that I'd jumped the gun on getting into BL, and my second thought was that I'd eventually have to own both. It wasn't long before I changed my mind again. There's already 4 large expansions for this one, and the battles aren't the most memorable parts of the books anyway.

Tide of Iron - the base game is pretty pricey by itself, and there are some pricey expansions to go with it. Of course, I probably have a similar amount by now invested in Memoir '44, and there are many out there who own and enjoy both. But the bottom line is, they're both tactical level World War II games with lots of expansions, and I only have room in my life for one of those.

Twilight Imperium (third edition) - TI:3E is probably the game I want the most that I'll never be able to justify owning: it's expensive, takes a long time to play, would require many plays before we started to get the hang of it, and it would have to compete for table space in a group that already favors plenty of other long, epic games. Still, there was a possibility that I'd get a chance to grab a copy, but Shards of the Throne killed that for me. Knowing how I am, I wouldn't be able to stop at the base game, so I'm just nipping it in the bud now.

There was almost a third category: Games that don't have expansions that don't need them. However, I decided to junk that category after the Horned Rat expansion for Chaos in the Old World was announced. Previously, I felt that game didn't need an expansion, but now that one has been announced I can't wait to buy it. In other words, that category would have been meaningless.

But oh what an awesome journey that is...I hope you get to play it someday.

The first expansion is a must. The second one looks to just add in some modular options and so just like you can resist the Alhambra mods you'd probably be able to resist Shards. I was very excited for Shards when it was announced and now I'm waiting and seeing.

I have played TI once. Between a late start and not really knowing what we were doing, it wasn't a great experience but I liked it enough that I want to play it again. I think I may be the only one in our group who felt that way. I know another guy who has it, so I may have to see if he'll "hook me up" sometime.

I bought Warhammer Invasion and the only expansion I felt the need to purchase was the one that completed the two Elf factions. The game is very complete and playable and fun with plenty of variety without having to get all the boosters. Of course I hate deck construction these days so being able to play with base decks with some random neutral cards thrown in is great for me. We just barely started mixing factions in a single deck (again random mix instead of construction)so there is plenty of play left. Highly recommend the game it is great!

You guys got a new recliner?!?

Congrats on the little one Tony. We got her picture the other day in the mail. What a cute little gal!

I played Chaos in the Old World with the new expansion last weekend at Geekway with the games designer. It's a terrific expansion. Buy it without hesitation. Not that you probably would have hesitated anyway.

Congrats to you and your wife, I'm sure you'll make great parents...and extra good on you for adopting! A great way to share your love.

Now on to this business about expansions...

ToI - I have to agree...but to an extent. Not sure how much you get to playing the game but I would recommend DotF as a must. Normandy was meh...don't have FotB (not sure I will to be honest) and the Designer Book had some good scenarios and might be worth it (again depending on how much you get to play this). But I have to say, there is room at the table for this and M'44...they play different enough for me.

As a side note; I hope to have an expansion to Dire Heroes soon...and thank you for your support.

Cheers and best wishes for you and yours!

I am in the minority here, but IMO few expansions improve the game much. The expansion deck for Jambo is a typical example. After 20 odd plays I got the expansion and was eager to add some new cards. But I soon took them out because they made the game worse.

FFG Living Card Games are ones that I am staying away from. I think I have had it with card games for the most part. I do have ToI, Battle of Westeros and TI and I love all three games. The additions have added to the game so I do not worry about the cost/play benefit.

The thing the differs with Railroad Tycoon/Railways of the word compared to Power Grid is that the maps change the game for the number of players.

Mexico great for 2-3
Eastern US is best for 5-6 (4 is ok)

but other maps have there own sweet spots.

western us i'd say probably 4-6
Europe is good so 3-5 (2player is alright)
Railways through time is highly variable.

I can't argue against price. because powergrid is cheaper.
but the maps are bigger in rrt/rotw, plus they come with a deck of cards. I highly believe they are worth it.

then again, you could print some of the excellent unofficial maps, if you wanted.

Hessen works great for 2-3 (think i tried with 4 once, but i can't remember how it played)

But that's because Jambo is from the days when games shipped complete as they were orginally designed and then when they became popular expansions were added on as afterthoughts to milk the cash cow. These days games are shipped incomplete and are not truly whole until an expansion or two patches them up...

Railways of Europe is easily my favorite expansion out there. I think you are doing yourself a disservice by writing it off as "another map". We stopped playing the base game when we got Europe. I would play it over any other map unless we had 5-6 players, and that's the point I would play either Eastern or Western US instead.

But really, I'd say you could get by pretty well with just the base game and Europe. I have all of them except Time.

twilight is an awesome game, but as you said does take ages to play and will require a player base. good idea is to get some mates around, book a 6 hour time slot like once a month. 6-12pm or something. have a couple beers and order takeaways. great social feel and can all play a fun game.

the base set just by itself is pretty complete and is fun with just this. the other 2 expansions just add more rules and options. in saying this i have played with both expansions, and only like playing with the shattered empire expansion. shards is also a great expansion, but it is set up for more advanced players or ones looking for more varients.
