You may or may have heard of The Apples Project ( http://applesproject.blogspot.com/)... it was/is my attempt to recognize great games based upon their theme or mechanic rather than on the year that they were published. Back in 2002 (the first time I did The Apples Project), I added a category that was not well-received... but fits right in with our discussion here: "D&D in a board game". The winners were:

* Drakon
* Dungeonquest
* Heroquest/Advanced Heroquest
* Lord of the Rings (Knizia)
* Wiz War

If I was going to make up a similar list today, here's the five games I'd put on it:

* Catacombs
* Dungeonquest
* Heroscape
* Prophecy
* Return of the Heroes

Your mileage may vary. :-)

Strange that all the various D&D boardgames are missing from that list!

Your choices are too fluffy Mark!

I have no respect for any "D&D in a board game" list that doesn't include Descent: Journeys in the Dark. To me it defines the genre, just like Heroquest did before it.

And as Ninjadorg said, it's hard to talk about D&D board games and not include actual D&D board games! Well, at least the good ones anyway:
Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon Board Game
Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game
Dungeons & Dragons: The Fantasy Adventure Board Game

The only one of those that I've played was Castle Ravenloft - which I liked. But not as much as the ones I listed.

I've spend the last couple of days blogging about Descent, Chris.

I absolutely LOVED my one playing of Claustrophobia. I'd put it at #6, right next to Tannhauser (which isn't really a classic fantasy game, but has the right "explore & fight" feel.)

LOL. Sorry! I don't read all of your blogs. If one happens to hit the front page when I check the site for the day, and it's a topic I'm interested in, I give it a read. Dungeon crawl games are one of my favorite types of games. I didn't realize this entry was just one in an epic series of "My Life with Fantasy Games". Hmmm...maybe I'll go read the other entries.

BTW. I entered D&D-hood at the same point you did (70's blue box set) but never actually played it. I happened upon the AD&D books at Toys R Us and decided to play that instead. I mean, come on, it was "advanced".
