Among the best things in life is playing printed games in person with family and close friends. When those are not convenient we like iOS Board Games.
News, reviews, previews, and opinions about board gaming on iPhones, iPads, iPods and even Android devices. (iPhone board games, iPad board games, iPod board games, Android board games)
• Legion Stratego Game Released • Through the Desert AI Update • Trader for iPad Coming • Random Mission Generator for Space Alert • Repos Games in English • Tikal Submitted to Apple • Dungeon Solitaire Updated • Neuroshima Hex Price Drops • BattleSpace Magazine Feature on Tablet Board Games • Pirate Battle Free This Weekend • iOS 4.3.2 Released
• Legion Stratego Game Released - Apr 4 There are a number of Stratego apps out there, including an official one. This one by Funky Mobile Games (that's their name, honest) makes an impressive claim about its AI, which according to the developer "is ranked second in the Computer Stratego World Champions."
Funky Mobile Games wrote:
With an Artificial Intelligence engine designed by Vincent De Boer, three times Stratego world champion, Legions is a game that will not exhaust its possibilities and will provide you with hours of satisfying entertainment.
That's impressive Stratego pedigree. I'll admit I didn't know that this classic game had the kind of following that produces name-droppable world champions. Stratego nuts may want to check this out.
• Through the Desert AI Updated - Apr 7 Tribeflame has updated the AI in version 1.5 of Reiner Knizia's Through the Desert. I don't play this game that much, but I know there are some serious AI critics out there. Any thoughts?
• Trader for iPad Coming - Apr 11 Ka-Ching! aka Combit is an economic card game of buying and selling that was reimplemented as Trader in 2009. Now, Cocktail Games is promising to release Trader as an iPad game in French according to a post on Tric Trac. Here's a video.
• New Free Random Mission Generator for Space Alert Ok. It's not a board game. It's a player aid for the print version of Space Alert. So you'll need to have the print board game to use this. Idmonfish sent it my way and I said I'd post it. So here it is.
• Repos Titles in English - Apr 13 With more from our trusty iOS scout idmonfish:

"I emailed Repos Productions to see if the various IPad games they have in production (Ghost Stories and others) will be available in English because the screenshots I had seen were in French. They confirmed that they would be available in English, and that Ghost Stories will be available asap."
Evidently, Repos's app for Time's Up! has been already released on the Belgian App Store since January. I did not know this.
GameCenter Support for leaderboards and achievements
Dwarven Anvil Expansion - 9 new cards and a new tie ability, Willpower, which adds a one time bonus to cards before vanishing!
Diamond Dragon Expansion - A single card expansion featuring the most powerful hero yet, a heroic 6/6 dragon with Willpower!
Azure Priestess - A bonus card for owners of the Shambling Dead expansion, adding a new hero to the game.
Restore Function - Players can now redownload previously purchased expansions with a single tap in the card shop.
• Neuroshima Hexes On Sale - Apr 14 Both Neuroshima Hex! and Puzzle went on sale Thursday. Neuroshima Hex has seen $2.99 before as it's lowest price. Neuroshima Hex Puzzle has hit a new low price of $0.99!
• BattleSpace Magazine Feature on Tablet Board Gaming - Apr 14 Codito Development Tweeted on Thursday that they were featured in a nice piece on the rise of tablet board gaming that appeared in Battlespace, the online strategy gaming magazine. The article also featured Conlan Rios, and a developer I'm ashamed to say I had not yet heard of, Mantid Interactive, who are responsible for a WWI wargame app called Red Rover - The War to End All Wars.
• Pirate Battle Free This Weekend - Apr 15 This slick version of Battleship, complete with async (which is kind of rare) is free all weekend long.
On Friday, Apple released iOS 4.3.2 that includes bug fixes and security updates. The update applies to the GSM iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1 and iPad 2, and the 3rd and 4th-generation iPod touches.
Quote:
This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including: • Fixes an issue that occasionally caused blank or frozen video during a FaceTime call • Fixes an issue that prevented some international users from connecting to 3G networks on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G • Contains the latest security updates
Evidently iOS 4.3.2 does not apply to the Verizon iPhone 4, which has its own update available today as well. iOS 4.2.7 for the CDMA iPhone 4 includes bug fixes and security updates.
Same here: Ghost Stories is a day one purchase, absolutely! I play in Vassal and with my physical version, but I'd love a version that's more automated than Vassal.
Now if the devs would show more love for Android...
I'm kinda wondering why someone hasn't started an Android Board Games blog on BGG. Start it now while the topic is still young. Tablet board gaming is undeniably part of the present and future of board gaming.
Ive further news, this time bad - apparently the shareholders in the company which produced Hive have agreed to disolve the company, and Hive is no longer available on the AppStore. There was a thread on bgg where this was mentioned, referring to a twitter post.
So does anyone know can I update to iOS 4.3 without losing Hive?

An update shouldn't kill any of your apps. I've got at least three apps that have been killed/pulled from the App Store/whatever, and they've never been affected by an iOS update.
Of course, the apps themselves will never be updated again. But they're not hurting anything by just remaining in my iTunes library.

Thanks CaptainCosmic that is good to know - I was reluctant to upgrade in case I lost the app.
