I'll admit it. I was a little apprehensive when I originally saw that Fantasy Flight had got the license from GW a few years ago to make original Warhammer material. Now, a few years in, I see now at my fears were all for naught. I've always liked FFG, and seeing their treatment of other adapations, why should I have worried? Battlestar Galactica captured all of the paranoia and tension of the show. Anyone who played StarCraft could easily jump into StarCraft: tBG. The same justice is done beautifully when adapting a pre-existing tabletop franchise like Warhammer.

But...

This might be a minor nitpick, but where are my 40K games?

FFG has actually been pumping out a good deal of 40K material, but it's mostly in their RPG department: Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy, Deathwatch, and the new Black Crusade make up not only the bulk of FFG's RPG department, but also their 40K output.

What else is there? Horus Heresy is a fine game, but it's just one. There's Death Angel, but while Death Angel feels like Space Hulk and Space Hulk feels like 40K, the syllogism does not complete. Death Angel does not feel like 40K. (A fine game, mind, but it just feels separate from the mythology.)

Compare this to Warhammer Fantasy's representations at FFG. It's a boardgamer's delight: Invasion, with twenty-odd expansion packs yet; the much lauded Chaos in the Old World, with already announced expansion; and the supposedly upcoming Blood Bowl Team Manager.

The numbers comparison may not seem significant, but look at the variety of topics. WF has a Chaos game where you play a god, a card game where you play major races, and a deck-builder that deals with a slightly tongue-in-cheek spin-off of WF. 40K has a famous battle, one certainly well done, but one that does not represent the wide extent of 40K mythology the way that WF is represented.

Where are my big 40K games? Where are my six-player slugfests, where players can choose from twenty different factions? I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting something more from FFG than more RPG modules. Maybe there's something in the works right now. Maybe they'll spring a big secret on us. But I can just hope and wish for more 40K. I just need to tell them what I want.

I want more 40,000 please.

I would actually love to see some other GW games, not just 40k games, such as DungeonQuest, Chainsaw Warrior, or even Block Mania. Space Hulk would be great too, but I guess they cannot do "miniature" games.I picked up Horus Heresy but haven't played it yet since it's a 2 player game.

While seeing some more 40K re-themes, re-prints, or re-imaginings would be nice, I'm more interested in more original games in the 40K universe, much like Horus Heresy, or Chaos in the Old World in WF. FFG has a big opportunity with a virtual carte blanche to make as crazy of games as they want in an established, well-know, popular, and good universe, which they've been using. I just want them to use it a little bit more.

Yes, awesome post! I would totally be all over that. I love the Heresy stuff so I'd love to see the Battle of Isstvan or some other legendary Heresy battle. Maybe as an expansion for HH and introducing other factions.

A game about the Battle of Macragge cries out for an epic game. Heroic battle against the onslaught of tyranids.

You're not alone. I thought they would publish a 40k LCG after Warhammer: Invasion. Unfortunately it was Lord of the Rings. Now I am awaiting further 40k board and card games. As others have mentioned, battle for Macragge, battle for Armageddon (with three wars on that planet they could even make 2 expansions for that) or the whole Gothic War or any Black Crusade, or even the attack of one of the big Tyranid Hive Fleets...
The possibilities are endless.

While I can agree that a 40k LCG would be interesting indeed, they'd have a lot to live up to with Dark Millennium.

In fact, I believe that the LCG format would be perfect for such a re-launch of the system. No need to change anything mechanically, just make it a 4th edition, with the earlier editions not tournament legal.

Hopefully that would then allow the old community to come back together.

Stop waiting and start designing. Get some blank cards, maps, counters, a notepad and DO your own game.
Want a game about some epic battle? You already have the maps, the background, the minis, etc etc etc. Just pick some mechanics and start with the proyect! That was my intention in my geeklist.
I like Chainsaw Warrior but the game has many flaws, so instead of wait for another edition i take the best of that game and add/modify some stuff in order to get a better game. Same flavour, better gameplay!

DARE TO IMAGINE MORE

PS:My version of CW is still in playtesting phase by the way.

While this is a nice idea, I'd rather FFG do so, for a few reasons:
* They have good designers, all better than me.
* They have better bits in their games than anything I'll design on my own.
* They have the actual license.
* They're probably working on some more 40K material already. I just want them to do it faster.

Incidentally, I don't already have the maps or the minis or things like that. I'm a big fan of the universe, and I've read my fair share of the books, but I've not bought, constructed, and painted armies. That is out of my price range, and it's one of the reasons that I happy so far with FFG's output. They distill a lot of the experiences with the system's flavor and mythology into a package which I can afford and play on a regular basis. It's not a matter of not daring to imagine more; it's a matter of being practical about the games I actually want to and will play.

We can't get to an agreement because in my country i can't get the FFG products. Buy it via internet it's not an option because the final price is astronomic, therefore not acceptable. In example a copy of Memoir 44 in my door cost me near 400$... and thats 1/3 of my salary.
I dont have painted minis but if i get a game that i love to play -like Pandemic- and retheme it -like Cleanse the Stars- i can buy a couple of minis in order to achieve a final product that meets -or get over- the quality standar of any comercial game.
Finally, here on BGG are some graphics designers always willing to help you if you ask them. And their work quality is out of question.
