Wednesday on my mind

Many years ago - more than I should care to remember, really - some pals and I would play boardgames on a Wednesday afternoon and evening.

This was possible because
a) I was working nights at a Petrol Station (10PM until 7AM) and
b) the others were either Students or out-of-work.

Our routine would usually be something along the lines of
- 3.00PM: arrive and play Ikusa
- 5.30PM: break to visit the chip shop to get supper and return in time for
- 6.00PM: Watch Star Trek - The Next Generation on BBC2
- 6.45PM: Discuss merits and worth of ST:TNG
- 7.00PM: Play something else - possible more Ikusa or, if feeling particularly belligerent, an aggressively-accelerated Diplomacy

We really came to love Ikusa, preferring it to Risk in all ways - so much more to think about! Eventually, however, we began to get niggly about aspects of this otherwise splendid game and came up with a group 'set of rules changes'; these were:

[1] At the start of the game, following the initial dealing of province cards to players, each player is allowed to swap up to ONE card with each other player. This allows for more cohesive starting positions, rather than watching some poor schmuck diddled out of resources because they were dealt a massively-distributed hand!

[2] New Hire Ninja action to prevent the first free attack of a fortification when attacked 'from the sea'. The free attack is a killer bonus and there was no way round it apart from 'attacking from the land instead') - thus, why not get a Ninja to sneak into the Castle and kill all of the lookouts?

[3] The movement route from Awa to Kii now re-drawn as Awa to Shima. For more interesting play - especially as it stops Kii being such a bloody bottleneck!

[4] The introduction of an event deck that affected recruitment, sword drawing, provinces, some die rolls, movement etc. Just to mix things up a bit, none of these were catastrophic but they certainly offered more thought when allocating Koku in the planning phase!

I even put together a mini-rule book exactly aping the style of the original - complete with a photo-copied version of the front cover.

These changes were borne out of respect for, and familiarity with, the game and theoretically constitutes my first proper foray into games design* which is, as Lewis Pulsipher remarks in his recent Blog post ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/2325/so-youre-going-to...): 'Often the best way to start...make a variation of an existing game, because it takes a lot less time and work to get to the point where you can play it'

I'm not sure I can remember doing this, or wanting to do this, with any other game. It was only a few years later (years of drought WRT games and gaming - in favour of first proper job, first home and *gulp* marriage) when I discovered Magic: The Gathering and that had enough 'changes' to keep me occupied for the next 15 years, dammit!

I recently discovered my copy of Ikusa, un-played because we'd always used Rob's copy, being a thrift store bargain from Y2K:"Three of your English pounds for a mint copy, you say? Where would you like me to plonk my dobber, sweet Master?"

Unsurprisingly, people are tweaking their favourite games to this day (some nicely with genuine love, others as an excuse to criticize and corrupt); the more astute designers/publishers, of course, make use of 'the map' as a method of propagating (un-)official expansions.

(*thinks* Maps for Paperclip Railways? *thinks*)

So, following this extended hiatus, which game should I have a go at fixing next?

Final note: Are there any LaRP-ers out there? Copies of a basic LRP rule-set for my (then) young Brothers-in-Law surfaced in Rob's bequest (he and I worked on it together, co-ordinated the players and monsters, ran a few scenarios in the Forest of Dean etc) and I'm thinking of scanning the lot in to become a freebie download: Glorious Fortune, it was called.

Sadly I'm seriously considering unsubscribing Paperclip Railways as about 20% of my subscription notifications are about the game and always lead to you blog entries which actually are nothing about the game... (Most of the time.)

Or is there maybe a way to unsubscribe from your blog specifically and still receive notifications for the game from other sources?

I would be sorry to think someone is un-following my game(s) because I don't just write formal articles about them - I'm much more of a chatter and subjects drift in and out of my thoughts with some abandon.

Now then, now then, I have a letter here from a Matt Green from Horsham and he says: "Dear Tony, please can you fix for me to make Fury of Dracula it so I don't want to stab the guy playing Dracula or stab folk that persist in being uncooperative at finding him or, in fact, stab anyone that ever suggests playing it?"

No single game other than St Petersburg with unchanged cards provokes me into a blind rage as quickly as Fury, which is a shame given how much I like vampires and euro-horror as a genre. It's socially divisive (which never gets games off on the right foot to my mind), takes ages, is totally dependent on the social skills of the players to get enjoyment out of it and any one person can ruin the experience easily by being a dick. And don't get me started on 'smug-dracula syndrome'. shake

Now then, now then (jewellery, jewellery) as it 'app-enz hoo-ha-hoo-ha-hoo (sucks on enormous stogie) I..would like...veery much...to fix it for..yoo...hoo-ha-hoo-ha-hoo...sew, I had a word with som frenz o'mine...

(Tony hops into shot using an enormous elephants foot as the sack equivalent in a sack race)

HOW TO FIX FURY OF DRACULA:
[1] Lay Garlic around the entire board and playing area; if you're playing a 'true' game, the Dracula player will be unable to physically interact with the components

[2] Play with the curtains closed. Whenever Dracula does something you don't like, open them a bit letting light into the room - Dracula player must either retreat to the murky corner OR be bitch-slapped until red raw (thus mimicking 'burns')

[3] Substitute your copy of the game with Escape From Colditz - you can then sneak a unforeseen victory by stealing the Commandants car and driving to freedom...with extra rope and shit

[4] Use only the finest 'blessed stakes' - you can then stab anyone you bleedin' well please SAFE in the knowledge they will 'come back to life' once the stake is removed. Alternatively, you could use only the finest 'blessed steaks' and let the rest of them fight it out while you have a delicious snack?

[5] Post a subtle thread on BGG suggesting Fury of Dracula is well-balanced, thoughtful, interactive - other BGGers will find it impossible to let a clear position/opinion on/of a game stand and will chip in with corrections, arguments, alternative justifications et al - amidst this pious rhetoric will be the seeds of 'a better way to play'

*no! absolutely DON'T say anything! no! button it, y'ratbags!

Yes there is, the subscriptions on BGG are quite flexible.

One simple option would be to just subscribe to the individual forums you are interested in. The other (especially if you want to sub to stuff outside the forums) is to go into Manage Subscriptions (get that from the page where it lists your subscriptions that you haven't read yet. When you sub to a game, it gives you the defaults, but you can change that. The blogs aren't specifically in there yet (coming soon?) but you can work things so you get what you want and not what you don't.

The other thing is that the blogger can not link to the game unless he is really talking about it. Like in the above post, the esteemed blogger mentions Paperclip Railways only in passing, but spends a more substantial time talking about Samurai Swords (it were Shogun back in my day!). Links in the body of the post are all very well, but links at the bottom trigger the game subscriptions.

I don't mean to needle - I enjoy the blog. I can see how some might get irritated though.

Nothing "sadly" about it. If the designer is going to tag the game in his blog, it would be nice to have content relevant to the game. Tagging purely for traffic generation seems very impolite.

Done and done!

Calling someone a 'cock-juggling thunder-c*nt' is impolite.

However, as there is no malice aforethought WRT to my tagging I shall bear it in mind for future (non-)use. I have been labouring under the impression it would be impolite to muse upon a game / designer / publisher WITHOUT tagging them blush

How on EARTH (with its associated satellites) could you slip C-J T-C into conversation with the Vicar? Eh?

Eh?

Vicar: Have you managed to solve the last four clues in our prize crossword in the Parish magazine, David?

David: Indeed, Padre - 15 down: 'Ready the chicken for firing (4)' is 'Cock'

Vicar: Splendid, David!

David: Then, Father, we come to 8 Across: 'Sounds like a baby ewer up in the air? (8)' resolves to 'Juggling'

Vicar: Super, Mr E, super indeed! (takes another biscuit)

David: Progressing to 27 Across: 'Pre-lightning (7)' is, of course, 'Thunder'

Vicar: Top drawer! (lifts teapot, angles for pouring)

David: ...and, finally, 'Piers Morgan (4)'...

Vicar: (tips further, first drops dribble into teacup)..giving..?

David: COCK...JUGGLING...THUNDER...CUNT!

Vicar: (pot shatters against tray, jaffa cakes strewn to the four winds) *gasp* Oh my!

Exeunt...
