News Bits: Board Game Babylon, Bohnanza Released, Drop in the Price of Gold!, Outwitters

• Board Game Babylon Podcast on Eurogames for the iPhone and iPad
• Bohnanza Released!
• Michael Schacht's Gold! Price Drop
• One Man Left Working on Outwitters

• BGB Volume 91 - Eurogames for the iPhone and iPad, Part 2 - May 10
Boardgame Babylon, the excellent board game podcast, has posted a Podcast on Eurogames for the iPhone and iPad. Games covered include: Carcassonne, Kingsburg, Wabash Cannonball, Reiner Knizia's Labyrinth, and Boggle. This episode is labeled as Part 2 because the first part was a podcast done about a year ago with BGB Volume 80.

• Bohnanza Released - May 11
Years before he made his mark with the Harvest Trilogy, Uwe Rosenberg was mainly known for his simple yet crowd-pleasing bean-trading card game Bohnanza. Now AMIGO Spiel + Freizeit GmbH working with app developer Aspirement has released this modern classic for both iPhone (Bohnanza/$3.99) and iPad (Bohnanza HD/$4.99).

iPhone - http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

iPad - http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=Smq3RC8yf5I&offe...

• Skotos Drops Price on Michael Schacht's Gold! - May 11
It seems that even Michael Schacht's Gold! is not immune to price fluctuations because the price of Skotos latest app has been dropped to an historic low of just $0.99!

First Screenshot from Outwitters

• One Man Left Working on Outwitters - May 11
One Man Left Studios, the makers of Tilt to Live, are working on a born digital "multiplayer-focused, turn-based strategy game for everyone" called Outwitters. That last part about "everyone" might perhaps turn off hardcore board gamers, but it's this line,

One Man Left wrote:
"Turn-based meaning you can play a match all in one sitting, or back and forth at your convenience like Words with Friends."

...that has also piqued my interest. And apparently they got the asynchronous play working last week. wow Nice to hear that it's being considered from the ground up (not tacked on after release).

Also, the first screenshot posted has got me thinking of some comparisons. Some are comparing it to Neuroshima Hex, but the description and screenshot has got me thinking more along the lines of Nexus Ops. At this point, who really knows? It seems that even the guys at OML are still tweaking gameplay and rules. Lastly, the folks at TouchArcade.com are saying that this will release later this year at an unannounced price.

Sorry, I don't want to make a habit of this, but that last item about Outwitters was a late entry added about an hour after the initial post. It just seemed too good to leave out until the next News Bits.

If Outwitters is either a Nexus Ops or Heroscape clone, I'm so there.

Nice to know about Bohnanza, thanks.

As for Gold!, I can recommend it, it's highly addictive and well implemented.

Thanks for letting us know about Gold. I was debating about it for awhile. Seems like a no-brainer for 0.99

thanks

I wonder how the Bohnanza solo variant works. I can't imagine AI could pull that off very well in a trading game like Bohnanza.

Tilt to Live is pretty much the best iOS game out there, so I'm really keen to try Outwitters.

I grabbed it today. It is a GREAT implementation of the game. The AI seems pretty solid in single player have not played with others yet. It does a very, very good job of replicating the game and looks very polished.

How does trading work? You can't negotiate with the AI, I bet.

Actually you can to a degree. It works fairly well.

It definitely was, though. I had it all queued up in AppShopper and everything ... but I thought "I'll just get it tomorrow."

That was one quick-ass sale.

I almost did when I read about the Carcassonne expansion news yesterday. That will just have to wait until the next News Bits. Surely the Coding Monkeys are in no particular hurry.

I also bought Bohnanza and it's excellent, with a really good trading interface and strong AI. You won't regret buying it.

So I picked up the IOS version of Bohnanza to learn the game (I have a boxed version in the closet, and the rules just sort of mystify me).

Seeing that the rules link for the IOS version goes nowhere in the app, I'm now left wondering, what the heck do I have to do to buy a 3rd bean field?

Just tap on the 3rd bean field. If you have 3 gold coins, it will offer you a green check mark with the dialog box, otherwise you just see a dialog box.

OK, now another question. How do you access the 2-player game? I can't find any info about that one! Have only been able to play 3 and 4 player games. I agree with Scott-the rules don't cover some aspects of the game. That said, this is an EXCELLENT app and is well worth the money. Anyone who enjoys the original should enjoy this.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think they mean two humans in a 3-4 player game.

Re: Bohnanza

I refuse to buy double-dipping apps. I'm fine if a company doesn't want to put out an iPhone version (Small World, for example), but if you release both an iPad and an iPhone version of the same app, I shouldn't have to buy both, or have to play the iPhone version on the iPad.

Carcassonne, Tikal, and Through the Desert did it right.
