Tuesday Evening Gamers - May 17th/24th - Puerto Rico Expansion, Notre Dame, Attika and more!

May 17th

Okay, I missed a week. I was off work (prepping to head to my first Geekway to the West) and I hate typing anything long on my laptop as I have a habit of dragging my palm across my mousepad on the laptop, erasing stuff I had just typed. Frustrating!

Two weeks ago we continue with Timm and I playing a couple of games of Crokinole to practice for the tournament in St. Louis. We split the matches once a piece and was not able to squeeze in the rubber match. Chris arrived shortly before Jeff and it was decided to play Puerto Rico with some expansion buildings (first time for me, at least). We used the Library, Black Market, Trading House, Store House, Statue, and Cloister. It was a nice change up and forced a different look at the game. I ended up shipping a butt load of goods (only had four buildings overall and no big buildings). The Library, Tobacco, and Wharf helped me push my agenda. Chris ended the game by having all 12 building spots filled. I ended up winning with 50, Chris had 41, Timm had 40 (he got boned and had to jettison lots of corn on more than a couple of occasions) and Jeff had 34 (he did a mix of shipping and building).

Chris suggested to play Notre Dame next. The first play on Tuesday didn't go so well, but this play went better (I had played it twice more before Tuesdays, so I was familiar with the cards and such). I don't remember as much detail about this match with the exception that Chris killed us again with 54. I had 42 and felt pretty good with my play. Timm had 32 and Jeff 29. Almost played it last night (considered it) with just three.

May 24th

Last night it was just Timm, Jeff, and myself. Timm and I opened the night with a game of Crokinole. He managed the win in that match and Jeff had text us to let us know he would be a bit later than normal, so we broke out a game of Attika which I find is a great two player game. Not really heavy, looks great, and if I had not said it before, one of the best instrucion books in the biz. We had a tough battle but I managed to get things connected as I successfully blocked him off from getting behind me early while pushing his line. He did not take advantage of relocating a new settlement where I did. It's expensive, but that could have been the game.

Jeff arrived and he picked Thurn and Taxis. This game is five years old already? Maaaan. I have realized I have completely regressed in this game. It seems like I do worse and worse (or everyone is getting better). Strange. I feel like I typed this exact same sentence the last time we played this game. ::shrug:: Well, Timm just killed us. He pushed the carriages, managed to get mail to Lodz early and ended up being the only one to get the surrounding area points and the seven carriage points. Timm ended with 28, Jeff had 16 (with only a four carriage). I had 11 and I was up to the six carriage.

We called it early last night as it was a rough day at work for all three of us.

Watch for my write up on TEG's trip to Geekway to the West in the blog!

Absolutely agree. Four pages, neither too dense nor too sparse, easy to learn and easy to use as a reference/refresher. I like the Alea approach, too, but this HiG one is probably my favorite eurogame rulebook.

I'm awful with rulebooks. I either need Tom Vasel to teach me, or someone who I'm playing with to teach me. I was lucky enough to learn Attika from a player, but when I bought a copy and glanced through the rules, I was surprised at how easy they were to follow. Attika's not an overly complex game, but it does have it's little nuances to remember. With all it brings, the rules are not intimidating at all.
