I had the opportunity to play some games with my wife, and my brother-in-law, Nathan, last night.

While putting the kids to bed we played Alien Frontiers, with 3-players for the first time. At the end, I played a colony, taking a controlled area from Nathan, costing him one point, and gaining me 1. Then, my wife played a colony, taking control of an area I was in, netting 2 points, and winning the game. The score was such that had I taken control of that second area myself, my wife could only have gotten 1 point, and Nathan would have won. Playing with 3 players made the planet a much more important part of the game, where every decision is important (which it did not feel before). I much prefer this game with 3.

But, the distraction of the kids made us feel like this did not need to be played again, so I pulled out Fresco, which I was told is much better with the included expansions. I was not disappointed.

First, the New Blend colors (Pink, and Brown), add some more variety to the mixing, but feel like it is best utilized my advanced players. It often takes a turn or two of planning ahead to see them pay off (eg. I will take these colors, and mix them, then next turn, I will take more colors, and mix the product of those mixes, and THEN on the third turn I can paint the fresco for lots of points). It was cool when it happened, but often was easier to paint lots of cheaper tiles.

Speaking of taking lots of tiles, that seems to be the way to best utilize the Bishops Request. If you have lots of tiles with splotches, trade a couple of deniers for paint each round, and a few extra points. Better yet, it gave me something to strive for. Rather than just taking whichever tiles I happened to have colors for, I would strive for tiles with secondary colors, so I could get the bishop tiles. My favorite expanison.

Lastly, but most welcome, the Special Portraits will be added into all games from now on. The interesting cards made every round a fight to wake up earliest to score the best cards. Was much more exciting than "take 3 deniers"... "take 3 deniers"... etc.

So, I liked it much better, and have adjusted the score accordingly. Fresco remains one of my favorites, and seems to be aiming for the "my favorite game" spot.

Now, do I need "The Glaziers"? Does it add much? Does it fix anything? Or just add variety? Cause I dont need variety yet.

By the way, this is the second time Ive written this, as last time I hit some button and it all went away... dammit. So, I hope I didnt forget anything this time around.

Till I game again, I'm a little less in withdrawl...

thanks for reading.

The Glaziers module adds a new layer of complexity to the cathedral section and introduces... negative points! It's not needed, but it's very very interesting.
The other two modules (Wishing Well and Gold Leaf) are nothing special, but they add variety. They introduce a lot of luck factors, though, which I don't think is everybody's cup of tea.

There is also module 7 (The Scrolls), which gives players secret objectives (a bit like destination tickets in Ticket to Ride). Nice module, but a bit expensive for a mini-expansion made of just 10 cardboard tiles.

Well, it sounds like these can get added as a "if I find them at the right price, I might throw them in from time to time", kind of entry. I'll have to look a little further at them, thanks!

The Stained Glass (glaziers) module is very creative and interesting - and must have been in mind when they designed the base game, since there are already places on the board (in the cathedral) sized for placement of the new windows!

The Wishing Well is very similar to the special portraits (which, agreed, is a must no matter what other expansions you're using). Basically you get cards that give you special bonuses.

The Leaf Gold is the least interesting of the six - there's a special paint color each round that earns you extra points if you use it.

I'm working on a Fresco "print n play" expansion Sistina. If you have any opinions as to the direction I'm taking it, I'd enjoy hearing.

I think your work with the new board is beautiful, and I like adding the retouching idea, instead of painting the alter (Which I find thematically weak).

Adding brown/pink in this way would help to keep it's "advanced" feeling I disliked in the original minimized because you would not need to complete as many of them to end the game. But, ending the game at 11 tiles is a bit awkward though (as we find out with Royal Palace, and realize that the game has ended several rounds before we noticed...). For some reason, 6 seemed okay... maybe because it's quick to count??

Having the bishop need to be on the restoration space may make it hard to restore, with a larger board (more area to cover). Adding numbers to the touch-up spaces, and limiting the amount of paint traded, may make it not as worthwhile to get your bishop there. Maybe more restoration areas are needed, with more lower numbers to make the higher numbers more worthwhile.

As a matter of fact, a variation where the goal is to restore the painting, exlusively, would be really interesting.

...I'm picturing an area control game, on the fresco, using your workers to decide who gets to paint which pieces. sorry, Got off on a tangent there. You got the creative itch going.

Thanks for letting me know about your variation. I'm really excited to see what direciton you go with it. Ive subscribed to your post, for when you update it.

Thanks for such a thoughtful critique. As you can tell I agree with your assessment that the altar-painting mechanism is weak and unappealing. I want the "retouching" mechanism to be more tactical than a "paint pieces for points dump" but surely my ideas need some testing. I'll make sure to consider your feedback as I am evaluating my ideas. Cheers. I'm cross-posting them to the Sistina thread.

I was able to get it for about 25 bucks at my local (CSI) store - was definitely worth it at that price. If you're paying 40 bucks plus shipping... I'd only get it if you've really played out the other 3 modules first.
