Making you feel better…

I can’t really paint. I enjoy playing miniatures games but I can’t paint worth a poo. Ahh well, I enjoy trying. To compensate for my lack of skill I try and use odd color schemes and provide interesting back stories. Sometimes that doesn’t work or I get to lazy, thus my Malifaux collection is unpainted. On a side note I’m also terrible at gluing things together. Why do I participate in this hobby again??

As a bonus point I’m far to cheap to play Warhammer or 40K but I like to claim it is due to ethical considerations due to GWs policies. Ha! I do enjoy pretending to be pompous! I also won’t play warmachine since it’s so expensive, but here I have a story about the IGYG system and how there isn’t really any opportunity fire. I also have another story about artillery not being cool enough. I do love artillery!

What I would love to do is play a ~6mm Napoleonic game so I can have a battery of cannons, but I don’t know of any groups I can meet up with. Here I would play a Prussian army since I like the fancy black uniforms. Although A British army would be cool so I could include Richard Sharp!

Anyway, I promised to make you feel better about your painting skills and I will, I just get side tracked!

So, my first major painting project was my Blood Bowl team (see above about GW, my fake pompousness still works right?). I got a necromantic team cause I liked the wolves. Thus the Brain Smashers were born. So, detailed paint job? Nah. I used high gloss primary colors to paint the uniforms. No two are the same colors. My story is that the team is made up of star athletes from other teams who got resurrected and still wear the same uniforms. I hoped that the bright colors were blinding enough to ensure no one noticed the lack of detail. I did get the official zombie flesh color from GW for the zombies though (there was a sale at the FLGS I think). The team was fun to play but I never did very well. Middle of the pack team for the two seasons I played.

Next came the non-painted Malifaux. I got some flesh colored paint (which remains unopened!) but never got going on it. Sadly it seems to have fallen out of favor round these parts so I doubt I’ll ever get to it!

So, the newest mini game I’m playing is Dystopian Wars. I got into it because I liked the idea that there are land, sea and air units. Also you get to throw a lot of d6s. I like throwing dice. It’s fun! Anyway the Land forces just got released so I picked up one. I’ve been playing the Blazing Sun (the Japanese) since they seem to be the best at range (the other option being the Americans, but someone else was using them and I want to be different). Below is a picture of everything I own. It consists of one Naval box, one Land box, one aircraft carrier and one medium flier blister (the gyros).

Also note my picture taking skills aren’t so hot either. So the story, there has to be a story right? At the outbreak of hostilities there were some very patriotic Japanese rappers. These rappers pooled together their vast fortunes and bought a solid gold fleet to give to the government. Sadly they couldn’t afford (nor did it make military sense) to actually make the army out of solid gold it is only gold plated. Through the years the Bling-Bling fleet (as it is known) has been in some major conflicts and taken some damage, thus a lot of the gold has been worn off showing the grey metal below. Thus explaining my high gloss metallic gold paint AND why it is so poorly applied! I need to name some more ships, the only named ship is the battle ship, the Flo-Rider.

And thus is the story of my painting…

The trick to playing the miniatures games you want to play is to have both sides. People will play the game you provide.

Thank you for the great read. I wish you lived closer I would love to fight the Japanese rappers with my Prussians.

As a boardgamer I never thought I would get into the mini side of things, I now play Warmachine (Cryx Rules!), Malifaux (Rasputina's crew) and now Dystopian Wars (Prussia).

The whole modeling aspect of the hobby is by far my weakest suit and not really something I look forward to doing sometimes.."Sweet, a heavy warjack (I open the box) ugh, look at all those pieces, this is gonna suck" My painting skills aren't so hot, if you saw my bane knights from WM you'd cry. I do like your idea of a back story, perhaps my bane knights bought their armor at a second hand shop or something.

I do like that Dystopian Wars lends itself to not having to piece a lot of stuff together which is awesome. So why do we do it? For me it's the game systems, the epic navel battles, the goals and schemes and fluff of Malifaux and the awesome battles with Warmachine.

Thanks again for the blog entry *subscribed* look forward to more.

Then I'd have to buy two armies AND paint them....the horror! Also I can't come up with two back stories to cover bad paint jobs...one is hard enough...

I totally get the horror of a multipart model. I have indeed glued a model to the table (it was a slurid) and had to acetone / pry it off...good times...

I enjoyed my Zorida Malifaux crew. I am concerned about the new stuff though....looked a little power creepy? Never got any of it as it fell out as the second book was released.

Thanks for the fun read. Sometimes getting paint on your models is a pain. I have one suggestion, which might really help you out on your projects.

Get GW wash called Devlan Mud.

Your fleet looks nice, but the paint job is lacks dimension. With the Devlan Mud you can splash the whole fleet in under 10min and I promise it will make it look even more fantastic as it flows into the recesses and cracks and holes and gives depth to your paint job. Maybe it can even inspire you to get a paint coat on your Malifaux models. Devlan Mud dries much faster than dips like Army Painter and if you feel like you can simply do a simple highlight with the base color afterwards to add even more depth.

Check it out and enjoy gaming!
