June 7th

Summer Shanty by Leinie, it tastes like Pine Sol. Awful, awful stuff. It's what I get for being a Beer Slut yesterday (drinking leftovers versus having good stuff).

Yesterday, it was just Timm, Kevin and myself. I had just gotten done putting in the AC units upstairs so I was working on cooling the house down from 94 degrees (it was at a comfortable 84 when I left this morning) when Timm arrived. Basically, I ran to McKieren's to grab a pub burger as I had no time, nor the inclination, to cook. It wasn't quite hot enough to just cook on the table or floor. Timm came over as I watched from the bar window. So, got back, grubbed down, and then Kevin arrived.

Did we all need a rehash on that?

Yesterday, we tossed around some ideas for three players. One of the games was San Marco. Havne't played this once since 2008 and that was the only time I had played it. So, a heavy refresher on the rules for Timm and I and a full teach to Kevin. Thankfully, it's a really easy game to learn, especially if you had played area control games before.

The main parts of the game is the area control part and the dividing up the action cards each round. Six action and four limit cards are given to the starting player. That player divides up those cards into three stack as sees fit. Then, the next person gets to pick one of those stacks and do the actions, and so on. The starting player (divider) picks last. Limit cards push the game to the end and are used as a weak poison pill on some good cards (like a scoring card). Areas are scored as the game goes on and only at the end of the game, a final scoring happens. Well, that's it in a nut shell. Our game was really tight. Kevin jumped out to an early lead and Timm and I helped drive each other back to close by scoring areas where we were the only ones scoring. Ultimately, the last round, Timm had one limit point. Because he was so low and Kevin and I had reached the limit by that time, he got 9 points. That ended up being the difference as Timm had 55, Kevin 50 and I had 49. A much better game than the first time I played. Awesome three player area control game.

After some chatting and looking at the shelves for soemthing to play, Amun-Re was chosen. The three of us played this one online a bunch while it was on spielbyweb. I personally find that this is an outstanding game with any number (three through five). Auctions, resource management, I'm not even sure what else, but it all equals good. After the first scoring round, Kevin had scored 19, I had 15 and Timm had 8. Timm and I had a fair amount of $$ going into the second half the game. The first auction of the second half had, I just can't think of the name, but it had the area that had two temples AND it had the most pyrmaids on that side of the Nile. Timm started bidding and started at 10. I bumped it up to 15. Kevin went and bid up to six on a different area that Timm didn't really want so he couldn't get back in where I was at for 21. That killed the game for Timm. But it didn't necessarily help me either as Kevin and I ended up staying pretty even when the final scoring came about. Kevin ended with 52, I had 48 and Timm had 35. It was a tough battle and a great game. It was awesome to see this one hit the table again.

Amun-Re is a great game. It actually took me a couple plays to really realize how much I liked it though. Now it stands out in my head as one of my favorites that I rarely get to play. Definitely a good choice.

Thanks for the write-up, I had forgotten about San Marco, I think it wa a game I had looked into a long while back.

Amun-Re is one of my favorites too, but I am not at all sure about it as a 3 player game. Only 9 out of 15 provinces in play, that skews things for a start - thinking about the bonus cards and how achievable they are. And as you talk about the auctions have a lot less going on. I know it works, more or less, but, well, I much prefer it with a full complement of 5.

I do think five is the best, but three I find to be great as well. It's a different game. I didn't win but my thoughts...the first half of the 3 player game has you gathering cards, perhaps trying to get the most pyramaids, and getting money. The auctions are less important, unless you have the opportunity to get a card played. The second half, you KNOW what will be coming up for auction, and those auctions are intense, perhaps even more so as it might be the only opportunity to score your card.
