Welcome to Larry and Melissa's blog. We focus on two player gaming and gaming with our two children, ages 10 & 8. This blog will feature random musings, gaming reports and reviews from both of us. We will also post some non-gaming thoughts from time to time. Feel free to join in the discussions.

Monday and Tuesday were the last two days of school for the year. Tuesday night the kids were promptly shipped off to spend the rest of the week at their cousin's house to start their summer vacation.

I have no gaming details other than that the kids played a few games of Minotaurus, Race 3000, and Scrabble Slam!. I used the opportunity to play golf after work most evenings so my first gaming didn't occur until Friday. Here is my session report from that gaming afternoon.

This year I have made a concerted effort to get older games to the table and to introduce my children, ages 9 & 8, to new games. So recently we have played Monopoly and Chess along with older Euros such as Ursuppe and Entdecker.

This kids are out of school for the summer, I had Friday afternoon off, and there were thunderstorms in the area. A perfect time for gaming.

I dug out Castle Risk from my hidden treasure trove of old games and set it up. It only took a few minutes to explain the rules and we were ready to begin.

My son drew first and got Germany. He placed his castle along the sea. I drew Austria and placed my Castle in Trieste, along the Adriatic. My daughter drew last and got France. So the battle was going to be concentrated in the middle of the board. Everyone placed their armies and wrote down the location of their hidden force.

I gave the kids a few last minute hints then we rolled for turn order. My son went again and played first.

He promptly got some reinforcements then played an admiral card. He loaded up his troops and launched an attack against my castle. He only had a 2 army advantage. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to do this, since ties go to the defender. "Yup", he replied and the battle was on. . . if you could call it a battle . . . really it was more of a slaughter . . . as he destroyed my castle defenses while old "Roll a 1" killed 2 of his armies. Thus, I was eliminated before my turn. He then turned his wrath against his sister, taking her out on turn 2. Winner: Son.

Well that was quick, let's play another.

This game my son was not so lucky as revenge was had. Just not by me. My daughter won the second game but it did go several turns and I finished 2nd. Winner: Daughter.

Friday night Melissa joined us for a game of The Downfall of Pompeii, aka "The Volcano Game". The kids departed from their normal strategy of "Throw Daddy in the Volcano" so everyone got a chance to scream as their meeple was thrown to their death.

View of the board as the lava begins to flow.

The game was tight throughout and it can down to the last meeple or two. I was able to get one of my last two to safety and that proved the difference. Final Scores: Larry 9, Son 8, Daughter 7, Melissa 6.

Saturday we went swimming then we went to Georgia for a cookout with Melissa's family. We didn't get back until nearly 8:00 p.m. so we didn't have time for a proper game. We did play two quick games of Eat Poop You Cat, which resulted in hysterical laughter from the kids and a lot of laughter from Melissa and me.

Sunday I brought out Union Pacific. This is a game that I haven't played in over 10 years. I enjoy the game but for some reason it never makes it to the table. It was the kids' first playing obviously. The first turn or two was confusing but the kids soon got the hang of it. My son concentrated on Union Pacific Shares, black, with a solid second in yellow. My daughter had the majority in yellow and tied for the majority in Green. Melissa had the majority in several of the smaller lines. I had a rock.

The view from 4th.

I knew I was not doing well and the final scores confirmed this. Son 135, Daughter 109, Melissa 108, Larry 94. Maybe this is why I hadn't played in over 10 years.

I think I would have played better had I drank caffeine before we started instead of in the middle. I was in a fog! It didn't help that I looked up and suddenly the son had enough Union Pacific cards to start his own railroad. Oh well.

I've never played Castle Risk, but the BGG page says it's a 120 minute game. Is that a correct estimate?

The game shouldn't last that long unless everyone is playing in a cautious, defensive manner. I think this game, even more so than Risk, rewards quick, bold attacks.

Our first game lasted about 10-15 minutes, not including explaining the rules. Our second game ran about 90 minutes but only because my daughter was way too conserative in eliminating me. When she knocked her brother out, she was getting more than twice as many armies per turn than I was. But she spent time conquering areas of the board that didn't matter and building up huge armies. Had she played more aggressively, the game would have ran 45-60 minutes tops.

Sounds like they learned a thing or two from the original Risk.
