How many of you saw the Tanga popup that displayed The Golden City by Michael Schacht for $14.99? It was just a few blogs ago that I proclaimed my love of Schacht's China, and how I'd like to play more of his work. I did some quick digging, and discovered that it was Part 1 of his "gold" series, of which Part 2 was Valdora, another peach of a game. Well, my heart was sold for sure. Now to sell my brain on it -- which is a much, much harder process.
You see, I've been working on a geeklist for a while now that proclaims how last year's Resolution was to play all my unplayed games. And with the help of my many game buddies, that goal was accomplished! I had something like 30 unplayed games, and got them all played at least once. That makes me happy. But when situations like this come up, the opportunity to grab a great deal on a title that I'll probably like, my hands start to sweat a bit. First, I'm making a dedication to that game that I WILL play you. Ever since the Resolution hit, I don't like having unplayed games on my shelf (I have four right now - I must fix that). Second, I'm buying play-unseen. I have learned to not to that last year -- while most of the unplayed games last year I have kept, a fair amount have been traded or sold away. That tends to be a hassle, but trading for other games is fun, too. The one cool thing about board games is that you rarely lose a large amount of money -- these things hold their value quite well if you're a smart shopper. But still, the stinkers are still in my mind. This doesn't LOOK like a stinker, but to do the needed research to get a decent idea takes time, and time I don't have.
So you guys might know the drill at this point. You put the game in your shopping cart, do a few more wild review-readings, and then the justification process. How do I justify this purchase, when I have four unplayed games in the closet? Sometimes I can't, and the game goes unbought. But this time around, I had an out sitting right in front of me in the form of two $10 Amazon gift cards that I acquired from a hotel promotion. My mind simply tells itself that I will buy diapers on Amazon with the gift cards instead of a game that I originally intended to use them for, and the process is complete. It's times like these that I can start to understand the criminal mind just a bit.
So anyway, The Golden City is now bought and purchased from Tanga, and I have no idea when it will arrive. But I can rest assured that it was purchased in an admirable way, and I can therefore enjoy it without guilt.

100 30, well, some top number of games. My originally-proposed categories didn't go over so well with one of my dear readers (psssst, he's on the right side of your page there), and after further thought I agree with him. So here's what I'm going to do -- I'll be using BGG's official categorizing system to do my Top Games. The categories I will be using are: Thematic Games, Family Games, Strategy Games, and Children's Games. The other categories here (abstract strategy games, customizable games, party games, and wargames) are either too few in my collection or too few in my interest to make a list for. So now I don't have to wonder where to stick Ghost Stories - it's a thematic game, of course! The lists will start popping up soon, now that I have a baseline I'm comfortable with.
