The Unplayed List - Part I (The Basis for the List)

It's been awhile since my last post here and although I have numerous topics I eventually want to get to, there is one i particular that has pushed it's way to the top of the heap - The Unplayed Games list.

A Common Story...

When you first are starting out in the hobby, you most likely don't have a list of this type. You have a few games that you play a lot of and once you buy a new one, you immediately take it for a spin and see how it plays out. Games are all new to you at this point in time, why on earth would you bother to buy a game and NOT play it?

As your collection hits twenty games or so, you may realize that you are playing certain of your older games less and less as your new favorites come into the picture - grabbing all the attention and table time as you eagerly explore all the new mechanics and game play that they have to offer. Luckily, the time available for playing a new purchase or two most likely still dwarfs the total amount of free time devoted to gaming. But not for long.

If the gaming bug really takes hold, you'll find yourself increasing the size of your online gaming purchases. You will see that you are adding new games to an order - games that you originally had NO intention of buying at this point in time, simply to push your order into the realm of free shipping. Next thing you know, you are getting multiple TANGA alerts to tempt you into buying every game that pops up because it's such a good deal - even though you would never have bought the game otherwise.

And suddenly, it happens.

You realize at some point, that you now have 5 or 10 or even 20 games that you've recently bought (or at least in the past few months), that you have not only not played, you completely forgot you even purchased! How did that happen? That can't be right can it? How did I manage to get 10 games - some still in shrinkwrap even, and they've already been obscured by other games on the shelves?

Now multiply that effect by 10 years or so and you'll wake up to see that you have HUNDREDS of unplayed games in your collection. HUNDREDS!

Now I recently have been going through my collection and giving each game that I KNOW I've played in my lifetime an arbitrary log of a single play - just to remove those precious few games off of my list of shame, but even after I complete that (and I'm in the middle of doing so), I know that I will still have a sizable amount of games that have never been played once. Never. It is these games that this list is primarilly going to address - but there is another subset of my collection I'm looking at too.

For the better part of this year I have made a concentrated effort to try and play a lot of the great games that I have in my collection that have been languishing on the shelf feeling neglected. In some cases - a small few, there are some games that I've actually played when I first got them, but these games - for whatever reason only saw a single play. Add those to the list of totally unplayed games and you can see I have my work cut out for me.

I have not yet finished adding my "Unlogged Plays from Memory" but I can show you a partial list of games unplayed out of the first 300 games in my collection. There are more to comebut for now, I wanted to see if I was alone in this or are there others out there who also have a growing list of Unplayed Games that are willing to join me in my quest to shorten their lists alongside me.

The Unplayed List (The 1st 3rd)

Here are the games I have decided I need to play at least ONE TIME (Taken from the first 300 games in my collection):

Age of Steam, Alhambra, Amun-Re, Arkadia, Atlanteon, Back to the Future: The Card Game, Battle Cry, Boomtown, Buck Rogers: Battle for the 25th Century Game, El Caballero, Caesar & Cleopatra, California, Carolus Magnus, Cathedral, Cave Troll, Chang Cheng, China, China Moon, Clans, Container, Corsairs,Corsari, D-Day, D-Day, Deadlands: Doomtown, Dragon Masters, Duel in the Dark, Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich Lord, Dynasties, Ebola Monkey Hunt, Entdecker, Euphrates & Tigris Card Game

I will cross each played off this list and take a look at it next year!

Points of Discussion:

Do you find yourself with an increasing number of unplayed games in your collection? Have you already fought this demon and beat it? If so, what did you do? Stop buying games for awhile? Force yourself to play everything bought? How many unplayed games are there in your collection? What game(s) in my list would you recommend that I play as soon as possible?

So I am not the only one with that problem!! Since I moved from Mexico City I found myself without my group to play the games I own but I still have that habit of buying the ones I like, so now I find myself with 15 unplayed games at this time but many more with one or at most 2 plays.

I even started to sell or trade the ones I have never played wich is very unfortunate and unfair to those games (at least give them one try!). So I promiss myself to play all my games within a 3 month period or my wallet will not let me buy new ones (let's see if my wallet holds that promiss).

From your collection I would suggest playing Alhambra for a family evening.

According to the extended stats site, I have 778 unique games not counting expansions. Of those, 247 do not have any recorded plays. That's almost 1/3. Granted, a few of those are games that I just haven't played in a long time. Some are old games that we inherited from my in-laws. Some are games I picked up with no intention of playing. Even with that, there are more games there than I am happy with.

Some of that is I am something of a collector. I packrat things other than just games -- like Legos! I try to pick up all of the Alea games. I really love train games, so I pick up many of those. Often, this is just for the chance to play them as some of the 18xx and Winsome games are hard to get to the table. Still, the intent is to get them played...someday.

Over the years, I have gone through phases where I have cut back on buying games for a time. That doesn't seem to take for too terribly long, though.

There may be a change in the status of a lot of those unplayed games within the next year or so. Right now, the vast majority of my games are packed up in preparation for selling our home and moving to another. I have joked in the past that when we do move, we can only open on box of games at a time. We cannot then open another box until all of the games in that box are played. While amusing, the more I think about it, the more I like that idea. I just better not open the 18xx box first or it may be a loooong time before I play much else

I have 412 different games (not including expansions), I have an unplanned list of 22. They range from ones I have had for years to ones I bought only last month. I now have a list, written on paper of all things, of all the games I need to play and I am forcing myself through them.
I also have about another 20 expansions for games that I have never played, ranging from things that I got free in spiel box magazine right up to descent expansions.
It is a daunting task but one I am excited for.
I hope everyone takes up this challenge and we can do it together to fight the blight of the unplanned games!

Yes! I hadn't taken that into account - I collect games too, often knowing that they probably won't get played. After Avalon Hill's demise, I began buying up many of their old titles as I knew that they'd most likely never be reprinted again. I probably won't be playing most of those games (and I don't include too many of those on my list), but I still could never get rid of them.

I'm in one of those phases now - though not by choice! I'm just not making the kind of money I need to to be buying all the games I'd like to have.

What a great idea! That will certainly solve your problem. Although I don't have the same option, I'm making a concentrated effort to go through and log an unknown date as a play for any game I know I've played and then I'm picking the ones that are left that I feel should get at least one play in.

I'll keep ya posted onthe progress!

Alhambra it is! I really have no idea why this hasn't hit the table after all these years. It was a birthday gift from some good friends awhile back and it is a game I know I'd enjoy too, It must be that "there is always something newer to play" syndrome or something.

Thanks for the recommendation Julio, I will get it to the table - I promise!

My game group decided to start up a competition to get unplayed games to the table...

I realised a while back that I was starting to turn into a games collector rather than a games player and that's not what I wanted to be.

I've cut back on my purchases now that I've realised I don't need to own every game that comes out and by trying to keep the inflow of new games at least matched by unplayed games finally played I hope to slowly whittle the list of unplayed games down to nothing.

Check my progress for the year here - 2011 Iron Gamer Challenge to myself

My other challenge atm is painting all my Man o War models.. you're the inspiration for that!

Testify, Brother! Of the list above, Amun-Re is my suggestion for MUST PLAY THIS! IMHO it is Knizia's finest auction game-twists, turns, galore.

And yes, with baby #3 in the house, my gaming time is a limit function that approaches zero. Not that bad really, but still, too many games, too little time.

EDIT: That said, it is easier to click 'buy' or bid on an auction than to actually play a game once received.

Wow - only 22 games unplayed out of 412 total - I'm totally envious! I hope to reach that level someday but for now I'd be happy to just PLAY 22 of my unplayed games. I managed to re-visit one of the games I'd only played once (or was it twice?) when it first came out - Reef Encounter. The wife and I watched Scott Nicholson's video review - which is one of the best ways to teach the game to someone, and it really helped both of us wrap our heads around the game. I look forward to more playings in the near future.

I don't mind being a collector as well as being a gamer as there definately are SOME games I buy just for the joy of owning them - the fact that they most likely won't get played isn't a huge factor. However the majority are those I should play and those are the ones I'm working on.

Speaking of games I need to play again - Man O' War is right up there too!

How is your painting coming along? Which fleets do you own and which do you prefer to play with (and against?). Have you posted any pics to the forum yet?

I've been working on this since June 2009, when I had around 120 unplayed games out of a collection that is now around 800 strong. I originally set my self the goal of getting below 20 unplayed games before June 2010. I got to under 50 as it turned out but have continued since then and just last weekend got to zero unplayed games. Woohoo! The Swarm was the last to get crossed off as recorded on my Spiel blog http://www.spiel.co.uk/?p=445

That said, I'm already back up to 2 unplayed as I splashed out on Pantheon and Lancaster this week

I realize I am in a much better position than most geeks as far as unplayed games - I even have a positive Friendless metric! 15 games unplayed including 4 expansions.

And I have actually played everything in my collection, just my 0 plays are for games I last played before I started logging (except for the Hive expansions - I haven't tried them yet). But one of the things I like about logging plays is looking back to see when I played a game last, reading the little line I wrote about that game, seeing who won. So I am working on getting that list back to 0. Or close to it, anyway.

I feel your pain cry , although you've got a much larger collection.

I've been building my collection while trying to also get them all played, but finally I had to completely stop BUYING new games which really sucks. yuk I have allowed myself to trade games and have received new games as gifts from friends and family. But still it is really hard to get them played. The thing that has helped me the most is to find people in my game group who are interested in an unplayed game that I have and set a date.

I have 39 unplayed games in my collection of 192.

I think there is hope for me yet because in the last year I have successfully acquired and played 109 new games:

Good luck with your list!

Some good games to look forward to, at least!

I had the same problem last year and just made it a focus to play them all and therefore determine if I wanted to keep them or not. I probably kept about half of them -- as dangerous as it is, I have to admit it was kind of fun.

It's hard for me to pass up a good deal if the game is REMOTELY on my radar. It's a sickness.

I am so happy that I am not alone. My collection stands at 534 as of my writing this, and I bet damn near half are unplayed! That's why I'm going to logging my plays. This is a habit I should have started when I discovered this site. You might be able to make a wonderful contribution to society by starting a support group.

Alhambra is best with 3 players, I enjoy it with 2
(the Dirk dummy player works well); and for 4, use the Viziers expansion
rule (no need to buy).

Was trying to keep my collection under 100, now 250; by trading,
selling, giving away my less-played games. Having a weekly gaming partner
who is open to trying different games keeps my unplayed list less than
20 percent.

For games played LONG ago (high school, kids games) I estimate the
number of plays and log them on Jan. 1st of that year.

Unplayed games are a common problem and admirable goal to conquer.
Should be a BGG stat (top ten).
