Ten New Age of Steam/Steam Maps from Bezier Games and Alban Viard

Should you be a fan of Age of Steam or Steam, then you will have new options galore come October 2011 thanks to designers Ted Alspach and Alban Viard, who are each releasing new AoS/Steam map expansions at Spiel 2011.

First up, Ted Alspach of Bézier Games has a set of eight new maps, six of which are sold in pairs and will be available separately and two of which will be available only as part of Bézier's 2011 Steam/Age of Steam map pack, which is available for preorder for $80. These expansions, with descriptions from Alspach, are as follows:

-----

Age of Steam Expansion: African Diamond Mines & Taiwan Cube Factories

Harness the power of railroads to dig up diamonds and produce much sought after wooden cubes.

African Diamond Mines has you setting up a mining railroad deep underground to access valuable diamonds with a new depth counter that adds an additional level of strategy. Ramp up production with Taiwan Cube Factories, as you combine resources to produce new ones to keep the new infrastructure in Taiwan booming.

Age of Steam Expansion: Australia & Tasmania

Go down under as you build railways across the uninhabitable Outback and through mysterious Tasmania.

In Australia, quickly build along the expensive coastal regions of the East Coast and find a way to reach the cities in the west, which will pay more for goods delivered to them. Tasmania requires you to build an efficient distribution system for all of its towns and cities as goods are shuttled in from the mainland.

-----

Age of Steam Expansion: Outer Space & Reversteam

Two out-of-this-world maps challenge your railroad building and delivering prowess.

Outer Space requires "straight on" deliveries to ensure you don't shoot right by your destination, as well as a handy set of wormholes to get your goods across the galaxy quickly. Things are quite different in Reversteam, where not only has the traditional "great lakes" area been altered, but the cities want every kind of good except for their color.

Age of Steam Expansion: Orient Express & Disoriented Express

Special preorder-only maps that are challenging in new ways.

Orient Express is the classic European channel between Paris and Istanbul, where moving passengers quickly and effectively is your goal. On the other hand, Disoriented Express will have you scratching your head trying to undo the knots created by foreign, yet familiar landscapes.

Next, Alban Viard, one of three designers who release Age of Steam maps under the publishing moniker AoS Team, has a pair of expansions for Age of Steam only. Here's a brief description from Viard:

Quote:
The first expansion, Age of Steam: Greece features a nice twist from the basic game and deals with the country's recent economic crisis.

The second offering is an odd expansion taking place in the Cyclades islands where players must attempt to satiate the always-demanding tourists on a unique map featuring no hexes.

One hundred numbered sets will be available at Spiel 2011; to reserve a copy, which costs €25, email Alban Viard at ageofsteam2011@gmail.com. Fifty unnumbered sets will be available via mail for those unable (or unwilling) to make the trek to Essen, Germany; to reserve one of these copies, which sells for US$40 and shipping, write to Viard at the same address.

Alspach's are compatible with both Steam and Age of Steam; based on past history, Viard's expansions work only with Age of Steam.

Ted, somewhat off-topic, but since you seem to be reading this thread, can I direct you to this one? There's a question about a previous map that has gone unanswered so far.

with the new reprint long in stores isn't the market for aos expansions big enough now to sell the single pieces of paper for less ridiculous prices? I was willing to support that few years ago with my purchases, but now the prices seem way out of place in light of how many more sets you should be able to sell if the price wasn't ridiculous...

Printing costs are the same and the demand is about the same. There are more base games, but many of the original owners are not buying as many expansions because they already own a lot of them. For small publishers who can't print in mass quantities high prices reflect the price that they themselves have to pay to get the maps printed.

Unfortunately, the AoS and Steam map market remains limited. I'm able to print a few more than Alban or the Steam Brothers because I sell to Steam *and* AoS players, but only a very small fraction of those owners purchase expansion maps. Regarding the economics, the most expensive part of any game is unfortunately the board (followed closely by the box).

The price allows me to produce mounted maps, which everyone seems to like much more than than the heavy paper ones produced by the AoS-only publishers. You'll note that my maps at $10 each are 1/2 the price of the other AoS-only new maps on a map-by-map cost ($20 each), even though mine are mounted.

All that said, it would be great if I could produce enough of these to push the cost even lower. Get more of your friends hooked on AoS and Steam!!!

I was going to stay the same thing (minus the Steam ). If more people have a "the price is too high relative to the raw materials" attitude, then the prices are going to stay the same or go up. Simple economics, as publishing costs are based on scale and location (i.e.: Ted's maps cost more because he often prints hardboard, Alban's maps because he has them printed in the EU, where prices are numerically similar, but in Euros vs. American dollars).

I don't blame people, most people don't play these games as full hobby. Hell, AoS is my favourite game of all-time and I don't even buy all the maps anymore, though that's more a function of my own ability to play them all in my more limited gaming time; but that said, it's not as though the market for the maps has suddenly become voracious to the point where smaller publishers who do this as a sideline can afford to just crank out a few thousand pieces and sell them at the FRED prices.

For me, it's not the price is the player count. Most of my games are 2-player (with a few solor games thrown in). I love Steam but as soon as I see 3+ player count, I pass and hope for something better next year. I'd hate to trade it because I really enjoy it, but it's probably been at least 6 months since I've played a game of Steam.

Please don't use such deceptive speech. You well know many people do not like the mounted maps better, from polls and discussions. It's one thing if you want to say a majority said they preferred mounted maps, but don't go painting "everyone" with that brush. I wonder if any of those initially pro mounted map people are changing their minds as they see the maps piling higher and higher. It certainly lowers my interest in adding more.

And yours are twice what I've paid for most Power Grid expansions, which are also mounted, and larger. So? You're selling them cheaper than someone doing a limited edition run of 150. Hooray for you.

You can not compare Age of Steam fans from AoS team with a professional publisher like Bezier games that are selling other games and usually release party games. Our aim is to release small print run in adequation of the market to share our passion for this unique game

We do not spend time to adapt our expansions to Steam since we think that this game is just a pale copy of the original Age of Steam. More over if it is just to have more customers, that is not our business

The Us sets are sold out now, thanks for your support again this year
