Ares Games is a new Italian publisher that will debut in 2011 with a second edition of War of the Ring, the highly acclaimed board game from designers Roberto Di Meglio, Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi.

In a press release announcing the acquisition of rights from Sophisticated Games to publish the title, Christoph Cianci, CEO of Ares Games, said, "We are proud to be able to bring back to the international gaming market a prestigious game like War of the Ring. The game has been out of the market for a long time and there is a big anticipation for this second edition, which we forecast to release within the end of this year." The second edition of War of the Ring will appear in English in Q4 2011, with editions in other languages planned for release in Q2 2012.

This edition of War of the Ring will use the original illustrations from John Howe, but in a new graphic design with larger tarot-sized cards and a revised rulebook "with changes to some key game elements to make it even more balanced and engaging," according to the press release.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

There has to be minis... it's War of the Ring. But only War of the Ring Collector's Edition recieved such lavish attention. You can still find sealed copies for a price i'm sure

if this came with pre-paints for a reasonable price, it would be amazing!!!

Sounds like they're going to be releasing pretty much exactly what Nexus was planning on releasing. My guess is they bought the rights and all of the work Nexus as done to date.

Isn't the second edition going to included the material from Battles of the Third Age? From what I understand, second edition will be a version of the collectors edition without the flash of a fancy box and painted figures. So, I don't expect Battles of the Third Age to ever be reprinted.

That would be great to have a second edition that included the expansion instead of a reprint!

My understanding (which could easily be wrong) is that they will not be having a larger board.

I can always paint my figures to make them more differentiable; I can wear glasses to make some of the fine print more readable; I can download news rules, errata and clarifications to keep my game up to date.

But there is no way I can jam 10 armies comfortably in Osgiliath.

Of all the improvements that could be made, I would much prefer a larger board over all others.

My guess is (with everyone noticing the similarity of the logo between Ares Games and Nexus Games) is that Ares Games is just a re-forming of Nexus Games into a new company.

If you look, you can see Ares Games was formed in 2011...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgamepublisher/17917/ares-g...

Anyway, I could be wrong, but that is my guess.

Why sell the distribution or production rights of a very popular game to a different company, when they can form a new company and produce/sell it themselves?

Sadly, i think that never was part of the plan, if you check the old nexus announcement...

I'm on the boat with the people that has never owned the game, and is dying to... so anything will be welcome

You can get the War of the Ring collectors edition manual in this link:

It's much more easier to follow then the original.

If I remember right in one of the WOTR reprint discussion threads it was said by one of the designers that the new reprint would NOT be including the BoTTA expansion, however, they are also working on a reprint for that as well to go along with the Ares (Nexus) reprint. So, not included, but planned for next year, and I would assume (hope) it still is.

This is great news! Especially considering that I almost bought an overly expensive older copy off ebay in a panic a couple of days ago when they announced Nexus's closing.

Add me to the list of people hoping the different armies come in different colors of plastic!

I know this has been under test for some time, allegedly, but the $64,000 questions are:

What is the average the likely buyers are willing to pay? say $100 for a really good product?

Will Ares fix the conspicuous problems/untested changes, like the tower in Far Harad? Is Area aware of them?

Will there be any actual improvements, God help us? eg. would Ares consider going back to multiples of five figures rather than four?

Would fans of the expansion know the difference between good & bad design if it was inserted within them and set on fire?

Actually I know for sure that one of the names discussed for the company was ARS (latin for "art") and then discarded because of Ars sounding like Arse.

Ares is the Greek God of War, which makes some sense for a company doing Wargames...

Hopefully "Ares" (see http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ares)
does not sound so much the same as Arse! Beware the keyboard, however!

Andy, the price has not been announced yet, but I don't think the price tag should be $ 100.

There was a lot of additional testing done by the authors and several more people, and there are some changes (at least a couple of them quite important) which we think improve the game in interesting ways.

However your beloved "lost city" is not one of them, as one of the WORRIES is that for experienced players the FP Military Victory has become TOO EASY and getting 1 more VP on the board for the FP to take with ease would not go in the right direction,

Ares did not do any further editing to the latest version that we developed with this additional testing.

Most of the changes are "physical changes" in the line of what was already assesses as the most "doable" improvements, such as the improved board with the new John Howe's painting and new graphics, larger cards, an improved rulebook (from 24 to 48 pages!).

I am sure that in due time Ares'PR, Andrea Fanhoni, will issue more "official" news about this new edition of our game.

Great news that this game has found a new home and is being reprinted again. You can't keep a great game down for long (well actually you can but in this case it looks to be working out well).

Yikes! That doesn't sound like an improvement. I'd rather see 24 to 12 tight, coherent pages without a lot of extra fluff. Or keep it at 24, but edited. Why the bloat to 48?

Roberto,

I am sincerely hoping for expansions to Battles of Napoleon: The Eagle and the Lion, designed by another Di Meglio; so, am I hoping in vain?

I have painted all my minis for both the original War of the Ring and Battles of the Third Age so it would be great to be able to buy and upgrade kit consisting of the larger board, larger rulebook and larger cards. Is there a snowball in hell's hope of that one?

Regards,

Jim

If I'm not mistaken, the board will be the same size as the original, not the larger CE one.

I'd be happy for unique colors per nation! Please Ares...pretty please!

This is literally the only way I would buy the game. I found the process of searching for the countries to be too tedious to enjoy the rest of the game.

There are some nice pics here on the geek of guys who have color coded their pieces using spray paint, they look quite nice.

I also noticed that on the prototype version of the original game, the pieces were all done in colored plastic, I am assuming it cost too much and was easier to just do red, blue and grey to save on money, hopefully this won't be a factor in the reprint.

Save on money.? I can't imagine that margins are so razor-thin that the manufacturer couldn't spring for the Chinese sweatshops to produce color-coded armies.

NB: Potentially inflammatory language used to make a point.

It depends, with the quantity of minis that needed to be different colors, and then the sorting that needs to be done to be sure all of the proper minis are included, you have to think just having a huge bag of red and a huge bag of blue made it a bit cheaper... when dealing with the quantity of games, a nickel here and a dime there adds up to a lot of money.

Other games that I can think of with a huge number of colored minis usually are still on the sprue and require you to cut them all out...

I'd actually be OK with sprue-trimming, if it got the armies/nations sorted by color. Of course, that's me. I don't know how others feel about dealing with sprue....

Ares Games has not announced details of what will be available when from whom. The placeholder website for Ares has "not working yet" messages in six languages, including Spanish, if you want to read anything into that.

I don't know all the legalities, but often it's necessary for a new legal entity (name, etc.) to be created in situations like this.

I really didn't think that it was that close to coming out, even when Nexus was running the show, it just seemed like it was announced not too long ago, and usually we are used to games taking a lot longer to come out... I really do hope that it is out by Christmas, it is one of the few games I have given a 9+ rating to, and it would be nice get a new copy!

Yeah, I really think the elephant in the room we're looking at here is the distribution of the individual pieces in the moulds. Given the odd parts-coloring distribution, I would guess there is at least a 50/50 chance that different red pieces/armies share the same mould(s) / sprues, and there isn't an option to separate them like people want. Just my guess, but if they're planning on using the same mould(s) again, and I'd have to believe they are, it's likely going to be the same proportion and distribution by part color, whatever those colors may be.

The game hit the official announcement back on Feb 2nd with a forcasted September street date, and I never saw anything that wavered from that. So, I'd have to believe they were still looking to hit Q4 before Nexus went under. Barring the time it's taken for the old company to transfer its resources to the new one, they probably haven't lost a whole lot of time otherwise. It was stated in the liquidation thread that the designers were working until Nexus finally went belly up. So, as long as nothing was lost or destroyed, it's probably just administrative and legal transfer "delays" that are getting added onto it - maybe 6-8 weeks (?) Given that some companies and games have delays of 6 to 8 MONTHS, I'm willing to live with that, especially given they're still optimistic for hitting this year.

In the end I really think this turned out as a "better than most of us expected" situation when Nexus liquidated. While I'm not going to hold my breath for a Giftmas WOTR surprise, I don't think it's out of the question and, really, I'll just be happy to see/have it before GenCon 2012.

DuneKitteh is right, It does sound reasonable to assume that the molds are setup in such a way as all of the red pieces have to be the same color, and with molds being one of the largest expenses, if it is setup that way, then there may be no other choice.

However, in the original prototype photos, the DID use different colors, so maybe those were painted a solid color?

That is great news that they are still looking at Q4 for the production to be done, it is going to be great to get this game updated and out again!
