Earlier this week I got the word. Get the details of the game to the folks at GMT. Manoeuvre: Distant Lands was heading for the P500. For someone in my shoes, it was like Christmas in August. That's just how it works, you come home from work and there is a message in your in-box telling you there's work to be done. My first thought is of course, now it is time to really start working. Its all fun and games when the design is in your hands being honed and refined. But now, you have to harness your energy and work in conjunction with developers, artist, writers and editors. I LOVE IT! Five minutes of elation followed by hours of wracking your brain to be sure you have crossed every t and dotted every i. Time to get to work.

There is no BoardGameGeek entry that I can find for any game called "Maneouvre: Distant Lands". There is also no GMT P500 entry that I can find for this game. And your first blog entry doesn't tell me anything about the game at all, other than the title. A sentence or two explaining what the heck it is would be appreciated. (When I first played Maneouvre, I wrote to GMT and asked them to consider a Fantasy based re-theme, but I'm seriously doubting that's what it is.)

Congrats, Jeff! Manoeuvre is a great game. So is this the expansion of powers or is this the fantasy version?

The first post is exactly as billed, just the first word.

When it hits the P500 I intend to say more about it, much more. However, Distant Lands is a four-nation expansion for the base Manoeuvre game. It will include China, Japan, India & Sweden as well as additional boards using the under-utilized marsh, field and lake terrain types. I wanted to get the blog started and I intend to fill the details in over time. I also don't want to put the entry into the database until it is officially on the P500 list.

Fury, the fantasy version, is indeed done and coming soon.

Maneouvre is a sweet game, I've been playing it quite a bit lately, 2 of my friends each have a copy. Even though I'm most likley to play against them, I'd still like to pick up a copy. I look forward to learning more about Fury, and Distant lands.

You said it Jimmy. I really like Manoeuvre. My favorite armies are not the French and British surprisingly. I think the Spanish and Ottomans make a great combo, as well as the Russians and Prussians.

I've only played the French before, 4 times now though and I really enjoyed the games I've played. Good to know the others are fun to play too. My last game was against the Ottomans, very close all the way down to the last card. I would like to try the Ottomans myself next game.....Dang, talking about it again has put it higher on my wishlist. Ahhhhh, I'll just stick it in the cart nowshake.

Oh Boy. My friend Annie and I are doing a 56 game tournament (every nation versus every nation...) but this new expansion will swell that to 132 games zombie. If my math is right. If my math is not right, my combinatorics professor will retroactively fail me as she should.

Sounds great....I will definitely be onboard with this although....I really, really had hoped the game would be pushed forward into the Nineteenth Century for Civil War, the Indian Wars, and Franco-Prussian....

I'll be honest with you Tom, those periods hold little interest for me. Perhaps someone with more love for that period could do it justice.

I have had a look at the playtest counters and there are a few issues I have with the spelling on the Swedish counters...

"Liv Garde" (meaning Life Guards) should be a single word in Swedish and preferably in definite article - Livgardet

"Mounted Liv Garde" sounds odd, mixing English and Swedish. Consider using either language without mixing. In English you could choose between Mounted Life Guards, Life Reg. Hussars, Household Dragoons or Life Reg. Dragoons, while in Swedish the least cumbersome names for Swedish mounted Guard units capable of being fitted onto a counter I can find would probably be Livreg. Husarer, Livreg. Dragoner, Livgardet till häst (the most historically correct translation of Mounted Life Guards for the 1806-1928 period), or Livdragonreg.

Swedish regiments are named for the counties in which they were raised and sometimes use genitive in their names, sometimes not:

"Jamtlands Reg." (Jämtlands regemente) is correct.

"Varmland Reg." (Värmlands regemente) should use genitive and thus be Varmlands Reg.

"Vastebottens Reg." (Västerbottens regemente) has lost an R and should be Vasterbottens Reg.

"Kalmar Reg." (Kalmar regemente) is correct.

"Jamtlands Dragoner" (Jämtlands dragoner) is correct.

"Halsinge Reg." (Hälsinge regemente) is correct.

Cheers!

I have messaged Josef to see if I can enlist his help throughout the process to get the Swedish army properly squared away. Cross my fingers and hope he agrees to help.

Historically accurate names (including the proper åäöÅÄÖ character set) is a must if you'd like to pick up us Swedish history buffs.

Look at the reaction of Swedish gamers to the shoddy production of World at War: Operation Garbo if you'd like an example of doing it wrong.

I have every intention of doing it correctly. I only have 8 units after all. But help from Sweden, Japan, India would all be appreciated so that it gets done right. For my play test I just didn't have the proper characters to use for the specialized alphabet.

Great!

But I think its a real error with the Swedish army to not in-cloud any of its Finnish regiments,

Ex

Nylands regiment
Savolax Jägers
Savolax brigade

In the war against Russia 1808-09 the best Swedish units was Savolax brigade with its Jäger regiment.
