August 16th, 2011

Last night was the return of Mike. It's been way too long since he had been back in town so it was good to see him again (and game with him). After shooting the breeze for a bit, Mike, Timm, and I (after deliberation) decided to play Samurai, a game the three of us had played many times. So, we jumped right in. Mike forced a couple of ties early in the game but Timm and I snagged up on some pieces to keep the game from ending so quickly. Mike worked the helmets and managed the majority of those, I had buddahs, Timm had a rice patty majority. As soon as that happened, Mike ended the game with the fourth tied piece. So, we were all tied up and went to the tie breaker of having the most of the two pieces you were not majority of. Timm was eliminated there so Mike and I were still tied. He pulled out the win with having one more piece overall than I. Tight game with some awesome moves and setups by all. I'm personally convinced there are not many better looking games than this one. We play random draw as all three of us find that to be a lot more interesting.

Chris texted and was still about 20 minutes out, so the three of us pulled out Pickomino. I had just gotten a set of dice that Steve Duff

had made from Chessex. The dice are sooooo awesome! My wood dice were grimy and they bounced badly on my table top (usually ending up on the floor). These were the nice plastic dice, engraved, with the WORM! This game was pretty for a bit then Mike got some of the bigger tiles about mid game. We worked on stealing from him to whittle him down. It was enough to force a tie but then Mike and I had to shake to break the tie. Whomever had the most worms in the flop, won. He had one worm, I had none. We were tied at 11 apiece, Timm had 7.

Chris showed and we were hacking through some ideas on what to play. I wandered around the basement as everyone shouted out games and comments of "eh", "naaaah", "Not up for it". I opened up the front cabinet and Mike (I think) said "Evo". Evo? I had played it twice with my son and the last time was a couple of years ago. We all said, why not? The rundown on the rules took 5 or so minutes (not a difficult game) and there we were, trying to stay alive. It was the first time I had played with more than three and I think it was better with four (would be cool with five, I imagine). You have to keep your dino's alive and adjust to the climate by migrating to various parts of the land that have moderate weather. Depending on your mutations, you can survive in different climates, fight, claim territory, mutate cheaper. Points come each round based on how many dinos you have on the board at that time (after dying off because of the climate). An auction is there to gain mutations...but your "currency" is your mutation points (points for the end of the game). It was a very tight game and alot of back and forth of people in the lead. The game ended perfectly for Chris (the meteor hit immediate in the first round it could just when Chris took the lead. If it would have went one more turn, who knows who would have been in the lead. Chris had 46, Timm and I were tied with 41 and Mike had 37.

Really nice report. I also like Samurai and a few days ago I game it a lot with my cousin and brother. We choose the initial hand but randomly pick the tile after play one tile.
