Days of Wonder Announces Two Ticket to Ride Map Collections

In February 2011, Days of Wonder announced a Ticket to Ride Map Design Contest, with the winner receiving $10,000 and the joy of having his or her creation on game tables around the world.

Now the winners can be revealed. Yes, "winners" collectively as Days of Wonder chose two winners from among the 612 submissions received from designers in forty countries. The first such winner is François Valentyne with "Legendary Asia", which will be paired with "Team Asia" from Alan R. Moon in Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 - Asia & Legendary Asia, which will debut at Spiel 2011 and reach retailers in late October 2011.

The main twist in "Legendary Asia" is that some of the routes through Asia are labeled mountain routes, with one or more spaces on the route bearing an X. Whenever a player claims one of these routes, she must place a train from her reserve in the Mountain Crossing area of the game board, earning two points for each such train but losing access to them for the rest of the game. The player who connects to the most cities in a single network earns a ten point "Asian Explorer" bonus.

As in Ticket to Ride: Europe, each player receives one of six long routes at the start of the game in addition to a few other destination tickets.

For Moon's "Team Asia", four or six players compete as two-player teams, with teammates sitting next to one another at the table. Each player has her own secret hand of cards and tickets, in addition to some cards and tickets being placed in a shared cardholder that either player on the team can access.

When a player draws cards, she must place one card in the cardholder and the other in her hand (unless she takes a face-up locomotive, in which case it must be shared); when a player draws tickets, the first ticket kept must be placed in the cardholder and any additional tickets kept added to her hand. A player can spend her turn to add two tickets from her hand to the cardholder. A team's points are tracked collectively. Each teammate manages her own supply of 27 trains, and when one team has four or fewer trains remaining, each player takes one final turn, then the game ends, with the team who scored the most points winning.

While the tunnels in "Team Asia" are short, note that they bear a number from 4 to 6; this indicates the number of cards that must be revealed when building such a tunnel, so while you don't travel far, the effort required could be must larger than you expected.

The second winner in the design contest is Ian Vincent, whose "India" will be paired with a reprint of Moon's Ticket to Ride: Switzerland in Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 2 - India & Switzerland, due out worldwide in December 2011. Each of these expansions retails for $30/€28.

In "India", for 2-4 players, in addition to scoring points for claiming routes and completing tickets, a player can also score points in two other ways. First, the player with the longest continuous path of trains receives a ten point bonus.

Second, each player scores bonus points for connecting the cities on one or more tickets with two distinct routes. Thus if you connect Dhubri and Mangalore with two separate routes (and you hold the destination ticket connecting these two points!), then in addition to scoring 12 points for the ticket, you score bonus points. The first two such tickets earn five additional points each, and the next three earn ten points each for a maximum bonus of 40 points.

And completing this expansion is a reprint of "Switzerland" for 2-3 players. Instead of connecting only cities, some destination tickets connect a city to a country or one country to any of those surrounding Switzerland; a player who completes such a ticket scores the highest point value for which she qualifies. Unlike most other TtR games, discarded tickets are removed from the game instead of being returned to the ticket deck. Also, Locomotives can be used only to build tunnels.

Ticket to Ride: Switzerland has been out of print for a couple of years, so I expect to hear equal amounts of groans and huzzahs that it's available once again, yet one is perhaps forced to buy a second copy of Switzerland in order to acquire India (despite Switzerland costing $25 when it appeared on its own four years ago). Which collective sound will be loudest in the end?

I looks like Swiss is still missing the scoring table from the map (Yes, I know it was added to the replacement card set eventually)

This is definitely a groan for me. I own Switzerland and have no intentions of buying a second copy for another map. $30 is far more than I would be willing to pay.

As for Asia, both could be interesting but the Legendary map looks rather funky. I'm not very impressed by the offerings here. India loks the coolest, but...

When Days of Wonder first announced that they will be expanding the ticket to ride family I instantly lit up with joy, having previously purchased any box that has "Ticket to Ride" on it.
This feeling quickly left after seeing what is coming now.

I think what I would have loved to see was a few new maps with original rules and no new added in features.

Volume1-
Of all places in the world strange to see 2 Asia maps

Legendary Asia:
nice map, not sure how i feel about the Mountain mechanic

Team Asia-
The Team mechanic seems too polluted on what was once a nice simple game.

Volume2-
Switzerland:
It is deeply regretting to see that Switzerland is being packaged with India. As much as this is a GREAT map it is not something that I wish to own/purchase 2 copies of. Being out of print it made for a nice piece to any board game collection and something special for a ticket to ride fan. If they wanted to do a re-print they should have just brought it back on its own. It feels they copped out here and ran dry for some creative jucies from the well in coming up with something new and fresh.

India:
Nice looking map. Love that they went for another vertical layout.
Not sure about the connecting cities on different tickets mechanic.

but regardless I wont get to play it cause I wont buy Swiss again.

Hm. I really expected these to be a little more wild - not necessarily licensed fictional properties, but maybe something a little more...imaginative. They all look fine and everything but I expected to see a bit more of a twist on the usual geography.

This might go without saying... but...

I'm assuming these "map collections" are indeed just the board (double sided) with matching set of cards for each... and no trains or train cards will be included?
(Thus.. you need a full copy of TtR.).

HUZZAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The three new ones sound terrific, and I can't wait to own a copy of Swiss.

My advice to Swiss owners is to sell your copy NOW before people hear about it. You can get all four of these maps for the price of your Swiss board.

When the Map Packs were announced, I was expecting more content actually. The price point for 2 maps + tickets seems really steep. On top of that, the Asia expansion will have you playing in the same region twice (albeit on a different scale).

I agree with the comment that the additional rules seem convoluted. The charm for me (and most) in TtR is that it's simple. Why change a winning team? Although if the rules are optional - I guess I can live with it.

I seem to find India/Switzerland much better value than Asia, as you get maps that are adjusted to the player count, making a thighter game for all player counts.

Almost. The Asia Map Collection includes nine trains of each of the five original colors (matching the trains in TtR and TtR: Europe) for the "Team Asia" side of the game board, in which each team member starts with 27 trains.

Otherwise, yes, you need one of these base sets for the trains and one of the base sets or the US 1910 expansion for the train cards.

I'm disappointed that we don't see a more unique concept winning. I didn't submit anything - but it seems to me that more maps of countries were really just no-brainers... I am sure the winners spent a lot of time on their maps, but I just don't see anything here to make me dying to have any of these...

Am I missing something?

As somebody who got into Ticket to Ride after the Switzerland map was OOP and impossible to find for a reasonable price, this is great news for me. I've played dozens of rounds of Switzerland in the online version, but it'll be great to play it on the table for once. I plan on getting both of these sets. ^___^

Also, I don't know how people can complain about $25 for two maps, that's a bargain. All of the T2R games I bought were $50 each, and I have an excessive amount of train cars. I would have loved to play $25 each for Nordic Countries and Marklin. I am glad I got Marklin tho cause it comes with purple trains, which is my favorite color. ^__^

Wouldn't be the first (or likely the last) time I've bought the exact same components repacked with some new element. It feels like those 'greatest hits' albums where they add on three new songs so the longtime fans will buy it.

Oh well. Not worth getting upset about really.

I believe when Switzerland was sold by itself it was $25 MSRP, and here you are getting 2 maps for $30 MSRP -so in that sense you are getting a better value.

My concern is that, of the three new maps, it's relatively easy to pick out the one designed by the "professional". Despite the seemingly unnecessary team rules, the Team Asia map is, to my eyes, easily the most coherent and best laid out of the new maps. India suffers from severe congestion and an overabundance of short routes (especially the 1s), while Legendary Asia suffers from the opposite: too spread out with too many long and intermediate routes and not enough short ones.

This is just an eyeball test to be sure, and without rules specifics and playing experience it's impossible to be certain, but one of my favorite aspects of the original was the balance in the route lengths and colors, and the congested East Coast versus the sprawling West Coast. I'm not saying every map needs to be like USA, but like Team Asia, they should have some balance rather than all congestion (India) or all sprawl (Legendary Asia).

DISCLAIMER: I did not submit an entry, so I'm not just ripping on the two designers who won because of sour grapes. I congratulate them for winning and am merely quarterbacking from my couch as it were.

Dont understand why the 9 extra trains for each color. If you only need 27 trains. I think we need an extra color so it can be played with 6p. Or did I misinterpret the rules for the new expansion?

Glad to finally hear the results of this contest!

Considering what Days of Wonder listed as some of the entries, I was surprised that they stuck with maps that were so normal. However, they all look fun so I'm eager to try them someday!

Now that makes an even longer list of maps I want to see on the iOS app:
• Nordic Countries
• Marklin
• Europa 1912
• India
• Legendary Asia
• Asia

Each of these maps has a new feature specific to it that was not in the original ticket to ride game.

New rules for each map;
Legendary Asia-
"The main twist in "Legendary Asia" is that some of the routes through Asia are labeled mountain routes, with one or more spaces on the route bearing an X. Whenever a player claims one of these routes, she must place a train from her reserve in the Mountain Crossing area of the game board, earning two points for each such train but losing access to them for the rest of the game."

Team Asia-
"four or six players compete as two-player teams, with teammates sitting next to one another at the table. Each player has her own secret hand of cards and tickets, in addition to some cards and tickets being placed in a shared cardholder that either player on the team can access."

India-
"each player scores bonus points for connecting the cities on one or more tickets with two distinct routes."

It seems pretty clear what he meant, and I am sympathetic.

It would be nice to have new maps with no additional rules/changes to the game/"twists". This is the Formula Dé model where you just get a new map, instead of having to learn a new mechanic. Like these...

Although, I suppose it's possible to play on the maps using the base game rules, but if you are just looking for a new map, you aren't happy about paying for the increased cost of a full game.

You need 27 trains, and your partner needs 27 trains in the same color. So you need 54 trains for your team, and the base set of TtR only has 45 trains of each color. They could have only given you trains for 3 colors (6 players = 3 teams), but gave you all 5 colors, so you can play any of the 5 colors from the base game.

Yes, you misinterpreted the rules. "Team Asia" is for four or six players competing in teams of two, so you need only two or three colors of trains – but you need 27 trains for each team member, or 54 total, which is why nine trains of each color are included. "Legendary Asia" is for 2-5 individual players.

I believe when Switzerland was sold by itself it was $25 MSRP, and here you are getting 2 maps for $30 MSRP -so in that sense you are getting a better value.

Yes, Ticket to Ride: Switzerland was $25 MSRP in 2007. Would those complaining about buying Switzerland again have preferred Ticket to Ride: India being a single expansion for $30?

That may be on purpose, the Days of Wonder page talks about India being "one of the most densely populated and colorful countries of the world." So they may wanted it congested on purpose. Also, the congestion may have designed into the game, because of the "Grand Tour of India" bonuses that players receive at the end of the game.

I only own TtR Europe (and the Europa 1912 expansion) which I adore. Now I think it's a no brainer that I will have to buy all these cool map collections, so that I can offer more options to my fellow players who also love our Ticket to Ride nights!

Quote:
The main twist in "Legendary Asia" is that some of the routes through Asia are labeled mountain routes, with one or more spaces on the route bearing an X. Whenever a player claims one of these routes, she must place a train from her reserve in the Mountain Crossing area of the game board, earning two points for each such train but losing access to them for the rest of the game.

You make it sound like the game is only played by female players

You gotta love it. Some people are bitching that these expansion maps don't make enough radical changes to the base rules. Others are bitching that any changes to the base rules are too much. Can't please everybody I suppose.

Hunh? What would qualify as "original rules" but not be a "new added-in feature"?

It seems pretty clear what he meant, and I am sympathetic.

Yes, I see now that the OP meant "a few new maps with the original rules" and not "a few new maps with original rules". A little English-language trickiness in "the" vs. no "the"...

You can't complain because you missed the TtR Swiss map and therefore it is a bargain for you. I can complain because that price is now for only 1 map as I already have the Swiss map that I have paid once for already - now they want me to pay again to get the India map. Not good DoW

Edit: Using the $25 RRP figure, you will pay $25 for both expansions, where I will pay $50 for both expansions. I purchased the Swiss map when it was available and supported DoW, now those supporters now have to buy the same expansion over again.

still, you can sell it for a very good price.

and if you want the india expansion, then you'd get it, hence the price, and we'll hope (the gaming community) that the game experience will be the remedy for your pain to spend 30 bucks.

if you don't want india, then nothing to complain about, so...

After acquiring Nordic, we never play Switzerland anymore. I might be tempted to buy it again if it was re-worked and India turns out to be awesome. After several plays, for us Switzerland devolved into mostly uninteresting ticket-drawing free-for-all.

Are these boards two-sided, or does each map get its own board?

I hear ya, but if you just think of India as being a $25-$30 T2R expansion, then it's no different than Switzerland back in 2007. Had they charged $50 for India/Switzerland, then I could see the argument that they should have split out the releases, but as it is, Switzerland is almost a free inclusion along with a $25-$30 India map.

If they had included the Marklin - Germany map on the back of the India map, I would have been fine with it, even tho I bought Marklin for $50 back in January of this year. Also, putting two maps in one box will make taking my T2R around much easier.

Regardless, I'm just glad DoW is re-releasing Switzerland at all, since it's probably my favorite map next to the USA map.

Agreed. But adding Alvin & Dexter helps to fix Swiss a little, especially in neutralizing the multiple country-to-country cards.

What's the point of having new maps without any rule change? It's just the same thing, only with different city names and destination cards.

I think having new maps each with its own little nuances is a way of making the game more interesting every time you play.

The only way we will play Swiss anymore, is if we are playing it with the Alvin & Dexter expansion, for that very reason,

Well, I'm disappointed at the maps chosen... they seem like very "safe" choices. I really thought T2R would have used this contest to pick a really cool and creative map idea.

I did submit an idea and I did make the finals, and I do admitt my idea was pretty freakin' cool. So although I didn't get picked as the winner, I was excited to see who did get picked because I was assuming it was going to blow mine away.

Especially when they mentioned on their bog things like 'Journey to Atlantis' and 'Human Anatomy' etc.

I felt the maps they ended up choosing were un-imaginative and things they could have thought up themselves without a contest.

Couldn't Days Of Wonder simply introduced a NEW map instead of reoffering Switzerland?

Even if it wasn't balanced that well, it would at least have been something NEW?

Surely, with all the new submissions, there was room for ONE more new map?

I understand why people feel ripped off about the Swiss map, but it sure seems to continue to be in high demand. I can't really blame DoW for looking to make more $ off of it. Of course, I'd buy it whether it was part of a two-map expansion for $30 or a straight single-map reprint for $25.

Aye, but that same logic exists in every other industry in the world. I paid $60 for a video game on launch day back in 2007, and nowadays that video game can be found for $10-$15. If you have just recently purchased the Switzerland map from ebay or something, then I could see your frustration.

Awesome news!

Don't understand the complaints.
- Got two copies of Swiss, sell one. Maybe wait till this box goes out of print and then sell your original Swiss back at puffed up price.
- Don't like the new rules, ignore them. Boardgame police aren't going to bust in and confiscate your games.

Awaiting to jump into the pre-order bandwagon!

Oh well, what can you do... it seems like every good game under the sun will be reprinted at some time (except for Dune and Merchants of Venus it seems).

I suspect you knew who did each map before you evaluated them, because Team Asia has *way* more 1 routes than India, something like 22 to 11.

But because one was done by the pro, you subconsciously let it slide.

Having seen films and tv shows with India's trains, severe congestion in the map is a *must*.

Funny how the winners were the exact opposite... shake

Portugal

Since I didn't own any TTR, I was split between buying Europe or Nordic Countries because I would play mainly 2-3 players. But liked the option of more.
Now that Switzerland is coming, I'm even happier that I bought Europe. Will be able to have the so-well-spoken Switzerland for my 2-3 player affairs

While I wish Switzerland wasn't a "B-side" to an India map, I won't complain. I'll simply think of it as paying $30 for a new map. And I'll reserve judgment on the changes (e.g., mountain passes) until giving them a try. Maybe TTR will have a whole library of expansions a la Power Grid and Formula D-make room on your shelves!

Here's hoping they have another contest for map designers in the near future. My 8-year-old and I made one but I never submitted it. He insisted we include a 10-space route worth 35 points because we *had* to create the biggest one ever!

A reprint of Switzerland. Let me add my voice to the "Yuck!" side of the argument, and I don't even own Switzerland. I have played it though, and found it the most uninteresting map of all (because the country-to-country tickets are just too easy and turn the whole game into a ticket-drawing luckfest).
I might get Volume 1 though, but it will depend on the actual price in the shops. The MSRP of €25 feels more like the price of a complete game, instead of an expansion.

And by the way, since when did Mumbai and Kolkata change their names back to Bombay/Calcutta? This is IMHO inconsistent with the "use local language" principle that was used in previous maps.
Edit: Just noticed "Peking" for Beijing too. T2R is no longer useful for geography teaching purposes.

No, the winners weren't in doubt.

Seriously, some great submissions with brilliant new mechanics that aren't overpowering. I especially like the India circle bonus.

The two new Moon maps? I rarely play TTR with more than 2-3 players, so I have little use for the new Team Asia map. And already can play Switzerland online.

I can't blame DOW for trying, but not terribly excited about these.

Europe, Nordic and Marklin were such a great progression of adding to TTR gameplay; maybe they spoiled us with that I'll be reading the reviews with interest though.

Congrats to the winners of this contest - I look forward to trying them both out.

I am in the "Huzzahh" camp. Glad to see multiple maps packaged together - can now reacquire TtR Switzerland and a new map all at once. Even if I still had TtR Switz, then I'd get the set of maps and keep India and sell/trade Switz.

Another option for all the people worried about getting duplicate Switz maps - consider donating it to your library - many of which just have the base game.

Thanks Days of Wonder for bundling maps at a fair price.

Games get reprinted. This story echos across every game forum, See Betrayal of House on the Hill, or Goa... or ... or whatever.

I'm a gamer. I want to play games. I also want others to play games. Games should be played and the more games available at affordable prices is better for our hobby. Personally I hate OOP games, it only seems to be an issue to those that own the game in question but I'm sure if those same gamers suddenly had a chance to get Star Wars - Queens Gambit, or Roads and Boats at the cost price they'd be more than happy... if you're feeling hard done by then I'm sorry but recognise that games are not for collecting but to be played. If you want to collect something get some stamps.

right.. sorry... just wanted to get it off my chest !

In the meantime...

Looking forwards to the maps, but there are some major flaws in the Asia one in that there are a number of non-existant train routes included... There is no single train line from Bangkok to Saigon (incidentally, this city is actually called Ho Chi Minn now - America lost the war remember ?)

Having travelled this route in 2002 you need to get off the train near the Thai border and take a bus into Cambodia to get a train to Phenom Phen... then you again need to take a bus/car/taxi into Vietnam to get on a train at Ho Chi Minn... Ok, somewhat pedantic I know to bring this up... perhaps something that could be incorporated into the game by someone more imaginative than me ??

Also not a hope you can get to and from Kathmandu by train... but anyways, I suspect I'm missing the point here so I'll stop !

(on ths subject of names, the place names for the India sites in the Asia maps are also skewed... Bombay (now Mumbai), Calcutta (now Kolkata) and Madras (now Chennai) need to be changed unless this map is set before the 1990 (which the actual India map is so these faults are fine for that map.)

But it's great to see DoW strike out like this... Unless the price point is ridiculously high in Europe I'll aim to get both of these asap

The tickets suggest Asia is set in 1913, and India in 1911... so are the names correct with respect to those years? I'll leave it to the history buffs to tell us.

From the look of the Destination Tickets that come with the game, it appears the timeframe is "Silk Road Tour 1913"

It's about time for an Asia map, so Hurrah! India looks interesting, but the beige tone is a bit of a downer for me. Something to suggest the different geographic regions (differnt colors for desert, jungle, mountain regions, etc.) would have made that one much more attractive.

Personally, I'd love to see a NE Asia map, with a focus on Japan, Korea, NE China/Manchuria, and Eastern Siberia. I think those territories would lend themselves to a great visual map and gameplay, and there is a very long history of railroads in that region of the world. Some interesting elements could include incorporation of the DMZ/North Korea into the gameplay (maybe enter North Korea from China, but not from South Korea, except with one special train card?), or the Japanese bullet trains.

W Eric Martin wrote:
Yes, Ticket to Ride: Switzerland was $25 MSRP in 2007. Would those complaining about buying Switzerland again have preferred Ticket to Ride: India being a single expansion for $30?

No, not at all. I would have preferred TtR India and the reverse... how about TtR United Kingdom, or one of the other contest entries?

I wholeheartedly agree with your POV. A reprint of an old map when we were expecting all new maps is very disappointing.shake

And from what I read and saw regarding the 2 Asia and the India maps, not too impressed.

Ever since I saw the TtR "Monster" expansion, I had a feeling TtR has "Jumped the Shark". Now I'm pretty sure.

I think I'll pass on both.

• Asia
Even better if they were take some of the more bizarro maps they received and port them to the iPad!

Well said, haha. I've been wanting Switzerland for almost a year now, but I didn't want to pay some exorbitant price just cause the game was rare. I'm glad it'll finally get in more people's hands, as it's really a great map (IMHO. Played maybe 50 or so rounds in T2R Online on this map).

There's always a balance between making it geographically or historically correct with making it a fun T2R map, I suppose. These submissions to the contest were play-tested numerous times by the Days of Wonder staff, so perhaps these maps were just the most enjoyable ones they played. Maybe some maps were submitted with perfect accuracy, no fake routes, accurate distances, etc, but they just weren't that fun to play.

So, I'm mildly disappointed by the re-inclusion of Switzerland, but only because I got a copy of Switzerland from my Secret Santa two years ago.

It's gotta be nice for those of you who didn't get a chance to pick up a copy before.

The Asia map pack sounds interesting.

I hope they do Future map packs. I hope some of the other contest entries get rebalanced and released in those map packs.

I wish I'd gotten my act together and submitted a map when the contest ran, but life did not cooperate...

No one is being forced to buy a second copy of Switzerland in order to acquire India, rather they are receiving a free second copy of Switzerland with the purchase of India.

Yes, I'd like to encourage people to give the maps a chance before they write them off - as someone who did a bit of playtesting on Ian Vincent's India map I know how much time was taken to get the balance between historical pseudo-accuracy and play experience right. And I'm still impressed by the fact that the India map introduces no new actual mechanics and yet it changes the way you play quite considerably, which is all you could reasonably ask from the original competition specs.

And my congrats to Francois Valentyne as well for what looks like an equally intriguing design. I look forward to trying it.

Very happy. Refused to pay ridiculous price for OOP Switzerland map, and I have been rewarded for my patience.

Looking forward to it.

Realistically, these will most likely be available for at least 30% off MSRP from most online stores in the US. So let's say $21 each? Cannot see how this is a "rip-off." Surely you could sell your old Switzerland set for $20... or even $15, easily covering the cost.

My experience with Switzerland was exactly the same. We played 4-5 games, found it to be markedly flawed "Ticket to Draw", and never touched it again. It would require an entire overhaul of its tickets and rules, specifically the country connections, to be a decent addition to the TtR family. I'm just glad I finally managed to unload mine 2 weeks ago before the bottom dropped out entirely on its value.

Despite the seemingly unnecessary team rules, the Team Asia map is, to my eyes, easily the most coherent and best laid out of the new maps. India suffers from severe congestion and an overabundance of short routes (especially the 1s)...

As I said, an eyeball test, but maybe you need to get your eyeballs checked too? I concede the 1s, but it's more like 40ish to 30ish, yes more, but not *way*. All those grey 1s at the bottom of Asia sort of blended to me, like the grey 2s on the East Coast of USA. Where the big difference lies is in the 2s, which looks like 20ish for Asia vs 50ish for India. So, I should revise my statement to read "especially the 2s".

And designer does play an important role. Criticize me for it all you want, but Moon's designs are much cleaner (that's why he's the professional), even Switzerland which I knock for its gameplay, but not its map. India may be the reverse of that with good gameplay, but a cluttered map. I don't know how the new multiple connections rule will play out, but with all that congestion there's certainly options. We'll see when it comes out I guess.

Personally I have Switzerland (since it came out) and have certainly got my £20 value out of the map with multiple plays.

I will certainly be buying the asia map pack and probably the India one as well (depending on the UK price point).

I can understand the re-print of Switzerland and know several gaming buddies who will be pleased to add it to their collection.

I would have liked to see a new map instead in this pack and switzerland re-printed stand alone just to add more variety into my ttr collection

But if these had come out single sided at £20 a pop I would not have complained (probably).

On the whole well done DoW

Ah, gaming. This episode is just another example of why I love games and loathe most gamers.

Funny, this is about the bitchiest thing I've read in these comments.

I will pick up copy of TtR India (and Asia) as TtR is the only game that my wife will happily play (on another note, the only other game that she has enjoyed was Airlines Europe - Alan Moon must be onto something). My only complaint is that the board reverse is Swiss and I would have preferred a different map to one I already own (of course I would). Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that other gamers can now enjoy the Swiss map.

SommerMatt wrote:
Realistically, these will most likely be available for at least 30% off MSRP from most online stores in the US. So let's say $21 each? Cannot see how this is a "rip-off."

That price point is not a 'rip-off' if you are in the US, but for us in the UK it is a different story. I'd be over the Moon if I can pick this up for £13... but I doubt I will be able to...

Like I said, I will pick it up, and I've had my little whinge on the matter, I don't really want a second board (no one would), but will put up with it. I will trade away my copy at some point for something (fortunately, I bought the Swiss map when it was available and not at silly prices).

If anyone wants to offer a trade, drop me a line.

After reading that Alvin & Dexter was originally designed to be included with a Japan map for a Japanese release, I was expecting to see that included here. I'd have preferred they simply re-print Switzerland as a single-map expansion, and include Japan with India instead.

Maybe we'll get to see a Japan/Australia expansion next year?

More prophetic words have seldom been posted
Anyway, I'll do some groaning and huzzahing too

I'll probably buy both despite the fact that
- I already own Switzerland
- More often than not, I find that new rules detract, rather then add to my enjoyment of TtR expansions (and expansions in general), the exception being Switzerland.

I like TtR and I like variety. Getting 2 maps for 2/3rds the price of 1 map + plastic trains, is a good deal.

It's too bad they didn't or couldn't make the same map work with a couple of variants (especially the two Asia maps). Then they could have added another region.

That scoring chart is for the 'Mandala' end game scoring and I think it actually says 5-10-20-30-40. The regular route scoring is the same, I think.

Ha! I had the same initial reaction. I submitted an idea, too, and assumed I had better be damned original if I hoped to win. I don't know if I was the only entry using Atlantis (as they referred to in their blog), but my map certainly used it and many other mythical locations. Even then, I thought, "Ticket to Ride: Library" was not nearly original enough to stand out. Everybody, I was sure, was going to try to link Emerald City and Camelot in their quest to be utterly unique...

So I was a little surprised that a.) the maps were conventional locations, and b.) they used some new rules, which I understood to be discouraged in the application instructions.

Well, easy come, easy go. I like the winning entries, and am particularly curious to try the new Legendary Asia mechanic. Congratulations, François and Ian!

Concerning the Switzerland Reprint:
I personally own Switzerland already but will still be buying the new collections that include it. I view the 2 collections together as 3 new maps for $60 (or $20 each). I also hope that by supporting these new collections then we will hopefully see more of them. There is no guarantee more will be released, but if they do well enough DoW would certainly pay attention. I'd love to see South America, Africa and Australia. Then you could to a mega game of all the continents. (Of course that's a lot of trains to keep track of.)

Concerning the Contest Winners:
As for the choices that were made with Legendary Asia and India. I say congrats to the winners. Thumbs up to DoW for taking 2 and doubling the reward money. And given the original requirements of the contest I think these are great selections. They fit the theme of early 1900 rail systems that defines the system and each give their own unique twist. Well done to the winners. I hope that the many other contestants will post their maps and cards so that we can all enjoy them just the same. A few already have been and they sound fantastic.

Concerning New Mechanics:
Honestly I'm most wary of Team Asia as it requires 4 or 6...I usually play with the Mrs and its just us 2. I guess we'll just play a mega game of 54 trains each. I think the Mandala Bonus and the Mountain passes sound like great yet simple additions to the game system.

Anyone else find it a little weird that the three new maps are Asia, Asia, and part of Asia?

Also, I don't see the point of the Legendary Asia mountain spaces. X spaces take an extra train and give 2 more points, right? So a route of 2 with one X takes 3 trains and gives 4 points. Why not just make it a normal 3-route?

Well, sure, but what other maps have there been? USA, Europe, Europe, Europe, and Europe? I can understand not doing another European map, but--oh, wait, they're reprinting one of those too.

This is purely a tongue-in-cheek statement, but...did the contest rules have reeeeally fine print saying "must include India"?

All I'm saying is if they have to sell the maps in packs of two, WHY NOT SELL AN ALL-NEW MAP WITH INDIA? The Moon. Chicago. Africa. Earth. Whatever. But here's an opportunity to do something different. Fumbled.

If there's a demand for Switzerland, then simply SELL SWITZERLAND AS A STANDALONE LIKE IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN and just republish it as it was. No redesign costs. No repackaging. Just fire up the presses.

But combining Switzerland with India seems the worst of both worlds.

Sheesh, DoW. Et tu?

Days of Wonder should take some of the runner-ups from the contest and make them virtual maps for T2R Online. Then based on the popularity of the online maps, they can decide which maps would be good candidates for physical versions.

If they made an online map creator, that would be even more amazing. Oh man, my mind is going into overload.

Because it's an extremely clever way to abuse the end-game trigger and pull the rug out from opponents who aren't done with their tickets. It's pretty brilliant actually.

Except that the Switzerland expansion was poorly produced compared to all of the other TtR games. The cards lacked the linen finish and weren't cut well (which is why Days of Wonder produced replacement cards later). The box was too skinny and the cards slid all over the place. The game board didn't match the quality of other boards in the series.

All of which means that "firing up the presses" is out of the question because no one wants a repeat of that production.

Hunh? What would qualify as "original rules" but not be a "new added-in feature"?

It seems pretty clear what he meant, and I am sympathetic.

It would be nice to have new maps with no additional rules/changes to the game/"twists". This is the Formula Dé model where you just get a new map, instead of having to learn a new mechanic. Like these...

Quote:
The main twist in "Legendary Asia" is that some of the routes through Asia are labeled mountain routes, with one or more spaces on the route bearing an X. Whenever a player claims one of these routes, she must place a train from her reserve in the Mountain Crossing area of the game board, earning two points for each such train but losing access to them for the rest of the game.

Quote:
For Moon's "Team Asia", four or six players compete as two-player teams, with teammates sitting next to one another at the table. Each player has her own secret hand of cards and tickets, in addition to some cards and tickets being placed in a shared cardholder that either player on the team can access.

Although, I suppose it's possible to play on the maps using the base game rules, but if you are just looking for a new map, you aren't happy about paying for the increased cost of a full game.

I gotta admit, if Europe, Swiss, Marklin, and NC were all just base game mechanic rules with a different layout, I wouldn't have bothered with them. They would've been too much of the same thing really.

What the HECK are you talking about? Look, all you described - cardboard strength, card finish - that's got jack squat to do with the artwork. All DoW has to do is fire up the presses again on better quality material. Same difference for the purposes of this discussion.

The fact is repackaging Switzerland, an OLD product, with India, a new product, is a money grab plain and simple to get the most loyal fans to buy the same map twice and guarantee a higher number of sales on the India map, while only having to invest the creative capital of ONE new map.

It's obvious, and it's a BS way to treat fans.

If the initial production of Switzerland was so poor, how come people STILL bought it?

If everyone was so upset by the production value of Switzerland, how does it preclude DoW just reprinting the SAME product on better paper/cardboard?

It doesn't.

They didn't have to package india this way. They could have made a new map if they had to sell it in a two-pack. They could have reissued Switzerlan without any real new effort on design.

But they chose not to do so.

You might try to convince people it's because they love their fans so much...

But that's just Kool-Aid talking.

Money grab, plain and simple.

Can't wait for the next map pack: The Moon / Nordic Countries!

Just for the record, I consider these folks the GOOD GUYS. Not at ANY point during Days of Wonder's history have I seen them do anything I consider a "money grab." In fact, in my opinion, they've done a lot of cool things for their customers, such as contests and free expansions for Small World, Mystery of the Abbey, the original Ticket to Ride, and Shadows over Camelot. They're also great about supporting their customers when things go wrong.

Personally, I would like to have two new maps as well. I was a bit annoyed when I first read the news. However, I can understand why they made this decision, and considering the price difference is only FIVE dollars off of the original Swiss map package, it's no biggie. After all, the economics of this business has changed considerably since this map was originally published.

I'll just send my original to my nieces/nephew and enjoy the improved quality of the reprint.

It's important to let Days of Wonder know when they've mis-stepped. They've done it before and I'm sure they'll do it again. But coming onto this forum and making an accusation such as the one above, especially in the face of all they've done for our hobby, is just wrong and certainly not the spirit of what this site is about.

Switzerland had an MSRP of $25. You probably could have gotten it from CSI or somewhere like that for say $17.

If they had kept that model, and say released India individually as a $25 map (I can't see it going LOWER considering recent economic trouble), you'd be paying $17...

But because they made the list price $30 for the two maps, now on a 33% off store like CSI you're going to pay $20.

You are mad about spending three dollars. If anyone can't afford three extra dollars for the India map, geekmail me and I'll paypal you three dollars. Wait, no I won't, because if you have the INTERNET, you have enough money for me to know you probably have three dollars somewhere.

Agreed, and I will be buying both. Even tho I did just buy Switzerland at the "silly price". But hey if it means spending more time with the lady of my life together, then I'm for it.

Kevin, you had me on your post until you said this:

Quote:
It's important to let Days of Wonder know when they've mis-stepped. They've done it before and I'm sure they'll do it again. But coming onto this forum and making an accusation such as the one above, especially in the face of all they've done for our hobby, is just wrong and certainly not the spirit of what this site is about.

Then, you lost me.

Coming onto this forum and making an accusation that they're doing this for the money is wrong?

Bullcookies.

Forums are for this. That's why they call it a forum. What they did is what it is. You yourself imply this was a boo boo, suggesting its a mis-step. I'm just more frank about it than makes you comfortable.

And just because I'm calling it what it is, doesn't mean I'm not acknowledge that they haven't produced some good stuff.

But don't kid yourself: they're not a charity. They release stuff the same reason all the companies release stuff: to sell more games, including free expansions and promos. When DoW decides to donate the proceeds from India to, say, UNICEF India, I'll eat those words. Until then, I stand by my assessment.

Besides, even with "all they've done for our hobby," there is ONE party that has done MORE for the hobby AND for Days Of Wonder: us, the gamers. The hobbyists who actually PAY to support all this. You can speak up on behalf of Days Of Wonder. More power to you.

I'm just trying to speak up for the people who pay for this for the sake of our beloved hobby.

And therefore such posts are CERTAINLY within the spirit of what this site is all about.

No expletives. No personal attacks (though one could argue that YOUR post was a personal attack on me, accusing me of inappropriateness for calling out Days Of Wonder on their choice of bundling a previous release with a new release when they likely have a plethora of new material that could have been released instead... but I digress). Just stating my opinion.

And I further state my opinion that if you're okay with this stuff, then you'll be okay with other companies doing the same stunts. And you must therefore think this is good for the hobby.

I don't.

I still think it's BS. And not a good business model for a game company nor for the hobby itself.

I stand by my posts. And I make them for the sake of the hobby.

... That said, release the dang map pack already so I can buy it.

Man, I didn't even THINK of something like an Atlantis map. A mythical map set would be AWESOME!!!!

So Atlantis would be an obvious choice. What cool location could be on the other side?

Why do we have to have entire country maps? I think a Ticket to Ride Texas map would be cool. Maybe incorporate hauling barrels of oil somehow.

Have you played/seen the Texas map created by xkcerman?

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/405471/ticket-to-ride-texas

I've been contemplating printing one out cause I'm a Texan myself. It's expensive to print these things out tho, and this one seems more square-ish than normal, so it might be hard to get the sizing right.

The negative reactions in this thread are depressing.

Three great new maps with interesting variant rules, and one reprint of the difficult-to-find and terribly overpriced Switzerland map... all sold as affordable and convenient packages of double-sided maps? Sounds like a good deal to me, and something that most fans of Ticket to Ride will enjoy.

Congrats to the winning designers, who hopefully have thick skin and realize that forum comments don't mean much until people have actually played using their expansion boards. I particularly look forward to trying India in the not-too-distant future.

I always thought a North Pole/Christmas Town map would be cool for the Christmas holidays. It would be another way to play with trains! Make it a 4-5 player map since Nordic Countries cover the smaller player number...

I'd be interested to know how many folks bought TTR:S (or traded for equivalent value):

1) At MSRP, or normal discount
2) At far below MSRP, as part of a clearance special
3) At the astronomically inflated prices being charged once it went out of print.

I'd be especially interested to correlate the vehemence of negative feelings towards the double-packaging with the category of purchase. ninja

Anyone here with leet forum / graph making skills?

WOW......I've never seen a bigger group of crybabies as I have in this thread. I'm calling the WAHHHHMBULANCE on some of you. Days of Wonder is a game company and if you want them to keep making games they need to make money. The maps aren't fan service, the maps are there to target an audience and make money. I for one am STOKED about the India map and getting swiss as a bonus. Day 1 purchase for me. It's really simple crybabies, if you don't like it, vote with your wallet and don't buy it. Something tells me this is going to be a big hit in the gaming community and the only ones missing out will be the fractional minority on this board whining about their OOP swiss map that's collecting dust in their basement that they don't play anyways. Boo Hoo laugh

Congrats to Francois and Ian! I look forward to playing many games on your designs!

I am excited with these new maps. I only own TTR Noridc Countries so I needed to expand my collection. I'm also really excited about Switzerland! For those that own it, why not give it away as a gift to a close friend, family member, wife or husband, child, cow-workers and buy the new one for yourself. Getting more people into board gaming is the best gift of all!

I'm disappointed that the maps don't have more culturally inspired graphic designs. They just look like any other TTR map superimposed over regional maps.

Having said that, I'm stoked to give them a try. Can't say I'd buy them -- if I were to buy any TTR at this point, it'd have to be something visually stunning... maybe a collector's edition or something -- but look forward to giving them a play!

No one is being forced to buy a second copy of Switzerland in order to acquire India, rather they are receiving a free second copy of Switzerland with the purchase of India.

And that's the official statement from Days of Wonder, too. When I received news of these Map Collections, I sent the following to Christine Goutaland, PR & Marketing Manager for DoW:

Quote:
One question that comes to mind is why Days of Wonder chose to reprint Switzerland as part of a Map Collection instead of as a standalone item. I know that many people will be happy that Switzerland is available once again, but at the same time those who own Switzerland might feel put out at being "forced" to buy a second copy of Switzerland in order to acquire Ticket to Ride: India. Did Days of Wonder take such issues under consideration, and what led to the decision to reprint Switzerland in this manner?

And here's the response from Ms. Goutaland:

Quote:
We definitely took into account this objection about the Switzerland map. The alternative would have been to print and sell the map of India alone. However, the cost for that single map expansion would have been very similar to the current offer. So, since the Switzerland map had been out of print for a while and much in demand, we decided to bundle them together, as we considered that this would offer very good value to our customers and please more people than it would disappoint. The other thing to consider is that if India had been sold alone, we would not have been able to reprint Switzerland at this time, which means people who want to buy it would have had only two options: continue to wait for an indefinite period of time, or buy it at an unreasonable price from someone trying to profit from its scarcity.

As suggested on our blog, people who already have a map of Switzerland (and are interested in the India map) can give it to a friend or relative who likes Ticket to Ride and buy themselves the new India/Swiss map collection.

I hope this adequately answers your question.

I already have three TtR boards (Europe, Switzerland, Nordic Countries), so I was eager to see what these new maps would be. But as it turns out I think my personal bar was set too high for these to qualify. I found my level of enthusiasm drop precipitously when I looked at these maps. I'm not saying they aren't any good, merely that they totally failed to inspire me. I think the lack of variety in the settings (Asia, Asia, and South Asia) played a big part in my dissatisfaction. I hope they do well enough to inspire DoW to release some more map sets further down the line, but this time around I will pass.

I think you should play them first (maybe demo at a con?)... When I look at the Switzerland board, I never think "So many tiny one-length routes and SO MANY TUNNELS! Lots of luck and blocking! INSPIRATIONAL!"

Thanks for posting Ms. Goutaland's response to your excellent questions.

I'm not sure about the answers, but I appreciate the thought that went into asking the questions and an official DoW reply.

Considering the key factor in my lack of motivation is the limited thematic range, I doubt playing demo games can remedy that. I'm happy to concede the potential of these maps in gameplay terms, but that doesn't mean they qualify as a purchase for me. There are people I play with that might get it, and if they do, I'll not object to playing with these boards, though I am still highly unlikely to ever add them to my collection.

Now that's kinda brilliant. I suspect that for a sizable chunk of the (non- to lite-gaming) world, a game like TtR is most likely to come out when there's a bunch of family in town, and everyone's looking at each other wishing for a way to pass the time. A North Pole theme would be a natural for that moment.

Thanks, KingKel! I won't post this at the Geek, since I stopped play-testing, and it probably isn't ready for that level of scrutiny, but if you're mildly curious what my mythology map looks like: http://tinyurl.com/3l96xmm
