#26 on my list - Fresco
Fresco was a game I had looked at for a long time here on BGG. I put it on my birthday wish list this year and my parents picked it up for me. My dad gave it to me on 5/14 when we met up in Harrisburg to play with the Central PA Game club. That was a good gaming day - played a lot of good games, including learning Fresco. Unfortunately, to date that's been the only time I've been able to play it.
I'm not sure what speaks louder; the fact that with only 1 play Fresco ranks #26 for me means it must be a super awesome game ... or I need to play more games. Maybe a little of both. Fresco is close to a top 100 game overall, and ranked 11 for family games - so it IS a very good game. I also think I need to teach Jen and her mom how to play because I think they would like it. I wanted to try to get into the tournament at WBC, but much of my time was taken up demoing my dad's game. Next year I'll give it a shot, and the sharks will have had a whole year to solve this one.
Since the game is about artwork, it's not a shock that the artwork of the game itself is stunning. Oliver Schlemmer's work on this game is stellar - especially the main board. Just really great work.
I like the mechanic of waking up early / going to market first / paying more. I think going first later in the game is a big advantage to get as much paint as possible. But like I said, with one play it's tough to say I know anything strategic.
I know I had fun playing it at CPGC. I rated it an 8 after one play. I can see that going up if I ever get to play it again. Unfortunately, since it's so new to me I don't have any really fun stories to write about it other than I had fun that first time. Here's hoping a second one isn't too far off.
Final Thoughts Many games come with multilingual rulebooks. Often times they are very intimidating since they are very thick. Fresco has rules in other languages, but they are separate. I thought that was really nice. I was able to give the German copy to a teacher in my school to use in class to use as a worksheet.
