September 13, 2011

It has been awhile. One week sick and last week I had a fantasy football draft (my team rocks, thank you) scheduled that same night. If it was up to me, I would have never scheduled on a Tuesday, especially after a long weekend. But, I don't run that league.

So after too long of a wait, TEG was able to get together and play a couple of games. This week we had five. Mike, Sean, Kevin, Timm, and myself. We sat and hemmed and hawed on what to play as it can be tough to decide and frankly, we were all sorta chatty last night. The first game we grabbed was an old favorite that hasn't seen the table in awhile. Chicago Express along with both expansions. I don't play the game without the two. There is a new expansion (at least for the Winsome version) but it doesn't sound that interesting to me (at least currently). Anyways, five of us which meant the game was going to be tight for money. The initial auctions went well with two of us not getting shares to start. Kevin grabbed two shares and was low on money. But ultimately, it did not matter. No rail made it out to Chicago. The game went five rounds (five payments of general dividends). Kevin won with his initial buy in with 60. Sean had 54 (he had 3 NYC shares). I had 33, Timm had 29 (and bought the Erie but wasn't able to really get any money out of it. Mike had 27.

It took us a bit to settle on a second game, but Kevin suggested an alea since it had been awhile that we had played one. Perhaps on Tuesdays it had been awhile, but on the non-Tuesday's over the last few weeks I have played Fifth Avenue numerous times (great game!) and The Castles of Burgundy (also seen it played on my Saturday gathering). So, for me, I have been playing alea stuff pretty consistently. Which is fine as I am a fan of the line, especially after discovering Fifth Avenue.

So, we pulled out Puerto Rico. We did not use any expansion buildings this time as Sean asked if we wouldn't (he only played a few times). So, we were off and running building and shipping. Kevin had the most solid setup, money, buildings and shipping well. Sean and Kevin were also the only ones to get one of the big buildings. Mike and I were doing a ton of shipping. Not quite sure what Timm was doing...he was working on money and building, but never managed to get a big building. His shipping was lacking compared to some of us. Sean was building mostly. Shipping became fast and furious the last few rounds. Because Kevin got a big building (City Hall), he pulled out the win with 51 points. Wasn't because, really, he had a very nice setup and wasn't reliant on building or shipping, he could do both. I took second with 48 on an almost pure shipping strategy. Corn. It fell in my lap. Mike got 45 with purely shipping. Sugar and Corn. His lack of Wharf probably cost him the game as he did have to jettison a few times. Timm got 38 and Sean got 36. Five in this game is such a different beast.

So far in both of my fantasy football leagues I am 1-0. Whoooo!
