• Smart Way HD Released - September 16
Smart Way Games has released Smart Way HD for the iPad. The app is a free download. The developer describes the app as "Innovation in board games". Make of that what you will, but I would put this more in the category of a puzzler. The game effectively creates an asymmetrical abstract contest in the spirit of Hnefatafl or Fox and Geese where the object of the game is to block a rabbit from escaping a hexed out field by planting bushes each turn. The game is single player vs AI. You plant the bushes, while the AI plays the rabbit in a meadow, and no you can't play the rabbit instead. The app also comes with unlockable undersea and desert themes. Very nice graphics and interface.

• Ruttencutter posts Haggis Screen Shot - September 19
Indie Developer Scott Ruttencutter is working on the iOS version of Sean Ross's climbing card game, Haggis. Scott posted, and Sean reposted on BGG, a screen shot earlier this week to show that it ain't vapor. Of course it's not, Scott's been working on it since June and to date the base game and interfaces are complete, and they're migrating all of the functionality developed for iPad over to the iPhone version of the game. It will be a universal app, but they still have to build two sets of interfaces.

Scott says they will be looking for beta testers for both single player AI testing and possibly online multiplayer testing in the next couple of months. Interested beta testers can shoot Scott a message.

• Big Daddy's Creations Reveals 2011-2012 Roadmap - September 20
I'll just repeat what was already posted here earlier this week by Brad in which we let you know that premiere iOS developer Big Daddy's Creations released a tantalizing announcement about the rest of 2011 and their 2012 roadmap, including updates on Caylus and Neuroshima Hex, as well as new announcements of Eclipse, Stronghold, and Zombiaki

We're happy as hell to see top-of-the-pyramid developers like BDC and others coming out with big announcements for upcoming iOS games. The only down-side seems to be the wait. With such quality devs working on so many quality games, and with possible field-leveling improvements to turn-based multiplayer in iOS 5 Game Center releasing soon, it's really looking to be a promising holiday season and new year!

• Ubongo for iPad Released - September 21
From the seemingly-out-of-nowhere department comes an app for the iPad based on the award winning board game Ubongo. Developer Korner Entertainment has priced the app at $4.99. The app based on the award winning puzzle board game features four different modes including History (campaign), Quick Game, Time Attack (against the clock), and a promising-looking multiplayer mode designed to accomodate 4 players all sitting around the iPad

• Jenga HD Updated - September 21
NaturalMotion Games has once again (9x this year) updated both Jenga and Jenga HD, both to version 1.5. I now what you are probably thinking: "Why on Earth would I play Jenga?" right? Well, I can tell you that this app has never been better or cheaper than it is right now at just $0.99. For that paltry price you can make your friends and coworkers slap their heads and wonder "what will they think of next?" and you can add it to your small but growing collection of asynchronous online games. Here's the love:

• The Necronomicon Horror Updated - September 22
Nearly a year ago LucidSphere Media released The Necronomicon Horror for iPhone, a Lovecraftian single-player role-playing and card game of arcane horror and mystery. There was at least one long thread on BGG about its release that concluded in a bit of kerfuffle over a number of bugs in the initial release and subsequent update. Now with Halloween just around the corner it appears that LucidSphere has made another go of it, overhauling quit a bit of the app into version 1.2 and dropping the price to a mere $0.99 in the bargain. Also its name would appear to now have been shortened simply to "Necronomicon". Lose your mind over this:

Quote:
What's new

* Core game engine redesigned from the ground up to improve stability and enhance perfromance.
* Graphics and UI artwork updated to bring current version in line with upcoming HD version.
* Added new "Spell" category of cards.
* Various balance adjustments and repurposing of some card classes.
* Added some new Monster cards, some with special attacks.

• GMT Games Info Update - September 22
From a publisher of meaty games comes a meaty update. GMT Games updated their site this week with news on the electronic versions of their games. Rather than filter it for iOS we'll just summarize the whole thing.

Looks like Twilight Struggle (PC) ran into problems that caused delay. GMT expects to have something to show outside testers in 1-2 months. GMT covers a lot of games, so here's the rest:

The Caucasus Campaign (iOS)

In talks with two companies about:
Combat Commander series
Commands & Colors series
Manoeuvre

...VERY MUCH still looking for development partners...The below is by no means an exclusive list...would love to see and play electronic versions of:
Conquest of Paradise
Fields of Fire
Blackbeard
Leaping Lemmings
Empire of the Sun, For the People, Paths of Glory (actually, ANY of our CDGs)

If you are a programmer/developer or company rep and would like to talk with us about creating an electronic version of one of our games, please contact me (Gene) at gmtgames at aol.com. Thanks!

• Dungeons and Dice Version 4.0 Coming Soon - September 22
HYLMES, the developer of Talisman clone Dungeons and Dice has announced on TouchArcade.com that version 4.0 is "almost finished". According to HYLMES, the new version
HYLMES wrote:
...will support "what we all want".

Yes... Real-Time Online Multiplayer and leaderboards, achievements.

This app's price rises and drops a lot, but it's current $0.99 is on the lower side of its average. If you've been looking for a Talisman clone, this might be of interest to you.

Didn't GMT previously announce they were looking for developers for Dominant Species for iOS? Is that off the table and they decided to go with DS: TCG instead? Or did I misread the original announcement and it's been DS: TCG the whole time?

Just took Ubongo for a spin. The graphics are still a simple style, but look much nicer on the IPad than that screenshot would suggest. Its done in paper cutout style, with animations.

edit: I primarily got this game for multiplayer, which I have not yet tested.

I've been playing the campaign mode, which I find pretty frustrating. The AI fluctuates between solving the puzzle in 5 seconds, and spinning pieces for minutes. A flat timer on them solving their puzzle would be much less obnoxious.

The "double tap" to mirror a piece hasn't worked very consistently for me. Might work well for others, but not me.

Also, Africa is not a "land".

Will reserve final judgements until I actually get a chance to do multiplayer, since there are very few good simultaneous same-screen multiplayer games.

There's an update on Dominant Species right after the Twilight Struggle note if you follow the link:

"On the Dominant Species iOS project, the AI is getting better and we are waiting for some updated art which we should have in the next two weeks. Once we have those two things updated, we'll open to a few more outside testers."

It's worth mentioning that Necronomicon is very, very similar to Dungeon Solitaire. If you got bored with Dungeon Solitaire after a while, Necronomicon doesn't add much new.

I downloaded Ubongo right away, mostly because I collect games with tetris-shapes in them, and this one has been on my radar for a while now. Can anyone speak to how this compares to the board game? Is this pretty much all there is to the board game? (If so, I'm pretty glad I've never picked this one up.) What do all the expansions add?

I like the graphics pretty well also, but my wife and her friend were hanging around the first time I started playing it in campaign mode, and both felt that it was crossing a line of some sort. My wife even went so far as to say "You better not play that game anywhere in public". Is this sort of art inherently racist?

I have had no problems with the controls.

Incidentally, if you like these sorts of puzzles, Zentomino is only $.99, and I think it's a pretty good one.

Dungeons and Dice got pulled from the App store, because GW filed a intellectual property violation with Apple, citing Dungeons and Dice stole the rules from Talisman. Things like this make me really hate GW, especially because it would solved simply if they would just make a freaking Talisman game for iOS/Android!

That sucks, because I was looking forward to online play.
