Games, games and more games!

There were 6 of us. James and I tried to start with an Ascension while we were waiting, but just as we got it set up three more people arrived, so we put it away. Then there was a bit of a chat about The Works and the games they’re selling, before we eventually decided to start with The Bucket King – it was new to Haley, so we explained it to her, by which time Sami had finished with Robert, so we dealt him in and played 6 player. My pyramid seemed to be protected by three falling down ones to the right, so I’d only lost 4 buckets (in two lots) by the time all three of them were down to just a handful of buckets!
After that, we split into two groups, each trying one of the new games from The Works. Upstairs they tried Batavia, which is a remake of Moderne Zeiten. Downstairs I took Montego Bay – which turned out to be quite a fun light game of second guessing your opponents. Quite enjoyable, and would happily play again. We finished quite a bit before upstairs, so tried another new one – Highland Clans. I wasn’t impressed with this one – it seemed a bit chaotic, and relied quite a bit on attacking your neighbours, but with no great benefit. The others played a quick 7 Wonders while waiting for us to finish, and then we changed the groups around.
Haley said she really wanted to play Ingenious again, as she enjoyed it last time, while Richard expressed an interest in being the Dungeonmaster for Dorn again. Marion hadn’t tried Dorn, so joined Sami in trying to defeat the Richard Zorkal, while James joined Haley and I downstairs – surprisingly Ingenious was new to James too! My practice on the computer version had obviously helped (or the lack of Sami/Colin in the game!), as I won comfortably. Next we went for Evo, as Haley liked the idea of a game about evolving dinosaurs – she was a bit confused by the climate side of it, and I think Sami was right a few weeks ago when he said it didn’t work very well with 3! Then James suggested Black Vienna, and we introduced that to Haley. The others still hadn’t finished by the end of that, so I chose Tongiaki as an end of evening filler – unfortunately it turned out to be one of those “infinite loop” style games of Tongiaki, so took rather longer than usual, and finished quite a bit after midnight. We had the odd situation of all routes from Tonga leading back to Tonga or one adjacent island, then a clump of four islands all connected, but with only 2 safe routes out, one a one-way route to another group of islands, which is where Haley went, and ended up nowhere on the original land area; while James couldn’t get across the sea safely, but instead found a smaller group of islands in the other direction. I was the only one with boats in both areas so won – for the other two it just came down to which group of islands was worth more, as they were both on pretty much every island in their area, but had no presence in the other area!!! Upstairs still hadn’t finished, but decided to call it a game – then realised that if Richard had played his last turn differently he would have won anyway, so it was a Zorkal win – very much from turtling and just filling the centre room with his monsters apparently, which the particular combination of heroes chosen couldn’t do much about!
