The Good:
Hours of gameplay in a single play-through and motivation to play again and again.
A fully interactive story with dozens of strategic and civ building elements to manage and master.
Captures the feelings of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book in a grown up form
The Bad:
This is a hardcore game, be prepared for a sharp learning curve. It also has a hefty manual that will be required reading in order to master the game.
Some of the story elements are little morally ambiguous for my taste.

Gameplay:
Do you remember reading “Choose Your Own Adventure” books as a child and long for something similar but deeper? Have you ever dreamed of some sort of crazy role playing game/civilization building hybrid? King of Dragon Pass offers all of this in a package that feels right at home on iOS. It is a full port from a 1999 PC game, but do not be fooled by its age.

In King of Dragon Pass you play as the leader of clan hoping to lead your clan to superiority over the land of Dragon Pass. There is a short and long game either challenging players to survive for 10 years or to become king of Dragon Pass (a much longer process). At the start of the game players are introduced to the world and how it got to be in the state it currently is in. Throughout this process players will make choices that will set up the starting characteristics of their clan. After this is complete players are launched into managing their clan. The game is played out in a series of seasons. During each season players can explore, set up trade with other clans, attack other clans, build temples to gods, and much much more. During these seasons random attacks or events will occur that will require players to make choices much like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” story. These choices can have major effects on the story and will even affect the resources of the player. For example, if a vagabond enters your camp you can accept him into your tribe, give him food and send him on his way or kick him out. Each of these choices will affect your clan and the opinion of the clan about your leadership. These are just some examples and there is much more to do than I have described here. The game will continue until you achieve one of the possible endings.

Implementation:
King of Dragon Pass is an extremely deep and complex game, and the game can be experienced on many levels. Each play-through will offer new challenges as well as new insights into the games twisted structure. This app combines the meaningful decisions of an RPG with the complex resource and worker management of a euro strategy game. It should have great appeal for a large audience.

The design of King of Dragon Pass really shows its age. The game is all told through a series of menus ranging from the complex clan menu to interactive story moments featuring large full screen art. The art itself is a style popular in 90’s PC games, and though it does appear crisp and detailed, it may not appeal to all modern game players. The main clan menu is where most of the actions take place. From here you can access all of the varied options in the game including, changing your clan advisors, building temples to various gods, sending exploration teams to search the land, and several other things. This menu system is very dense and will take some exploration, but the game does do a good job of introducing you to most of the basic concepts via a tutorial, and you are able to explore the deeper elements as the game progresses.

As mentioned above, King of Dragon Pass does features a tutorial that will guide you through the initial year of a game. The tutorial was very helpful and introduced many of the basic concepts, but if you continue to play with just this knowledge you can succeed but you will see things begin to get more difficult. As the “years” progress you will notice that things become more complex, for example in the later stages of the game you will need to make sure you have appeased the proper gods in order to succeed in certain tasks. To really excel at the later stages of the app you will need to delve into the large manual included with the game. It is a large task but it is necessary if you plan on getting deep into the game.

However, all of this work is not without reward. King of Dragon Pass achieves a level of complexity rarely seen on iOS. There are over 40 hours of gameplay in a single play-through and with the variety available in each time through, it is feasible to play this game multiple times and get an entirely different experiences. This is partially due to the fact that your decisions really matter, for example, you could spend one whole campaign being a jerk, enslaving and murdering people, and you could spend another only trading and never going to war. The decision is yours and you will really start to feel like you are building something. This is really one of those rare immersive experiences, and it fits snugly in your pocket.

There are parts of King of Dragon Pass that can be hard to swallow. The difficulty level can sometimes be tricky. Just like with “Choose Your Own Adventure”, you can find yourself hitting a dead end through bad decisions early on. It is fair, but frustrating. The game also carries a pretty lofty price tag at $9.99. Now, it may not wow you visually like other titles in that price range but with the amount of content and complexity includes, it can be justified. The game is also iPhone only which seems strange, but we can hope that a universal update will be coming. As you can see there are many improvements that would make the game more fitting on iOS, but they do not too greatly distract from this unique digital experience.

Conclusion:
King of Dragon Pass is an intriguing game. It will not be for everyone, and its price tag should be a good reflection of the level of commitment needed for this game. If you are looking for a deep and engrossing RPG and strategy experience, this app may be for you. It is an enjoyable storytelling game that takes the genre to a new level.

+1

It's on my wishlist, but I'm holding off for the universal app update or the price drop.

If it's a great game, why would $10 keep you away? That's the price of 2 beers when you're out with friends. To me the issue is whether this is a game I really want or not, and for now, it doesn't seem like it's my type of game.

This is the deal-breaker for me. From what I remember about Choose Your Own Adventure, you can get screwed through no fault of your own - you're presented with a 50/50 choice with no context on how to make the right one. Choose wrong, you lose. yuk

Oh, and yeah, no chance I'd spend $10 on something like this. Not when the appstore has conditioned me to accept anything over $3 as 'expensive'.

It's not that the $10 is a barrier (at least for me). It is more that many other great games are available for much less. I have at least a dozen iOS games in my queue to buy, and none of them are that expensive. Hence, it would fall to the bottom of the queue if I was interested, even though it is not my type of game either.

I will not be going into a huge discussion on the pricing of iOS games, but I just wanted to clarify: this is not a "typical" (I lack a better word) iOS game worth a few $$, but instead the reimplementation of an existing, full-price PC game into the iOS format.

I can understand people getting turned off because of the price, when comparing with other iOS games (which are good, and worth their low price). Just keep in mind that this is a full retail PC game that is furthermore expanded, and then reformatted for the iOS.

Oh, and lastly: they had better be developing an iPad update as we speak.

Wow. I guess I know why I won't be an app developer any time soon. Personally I'd rather spend $10 for a game which will give me 50 hours of awesome game play than $3 each for four games that give me mediocre play for a dozen hours.

Unfortunately for those looking for an iPad version, I believe the developer has stated they don't plan on doing that. The problem is that the original art which was created for the PC game 12 years ago isn't large enough to fill the iPad screen. So, you'd basically be getting the same thing as playing the iPhone version at double size. With that said, I find the interface a bit tight on the iPhone but have greatly enjoyed playing this on the iPad.

Personally, this is the best game App I've purchased for iOs. It admittedly won't be for everyone, but if you like the idea of role playing the ruling council of a new clan trying to eventually grow to head a tribe and kingdom... Well, there is nothing else like it.

The artwork and game logic were already done 15 years ago. Was the overhead so high they felt the need to go Cadillac pricing?

I'm prepared to be proven wrong if they redid all of it, but it sure looks similar to what I remember of the original.

And no Ipad? What?

The point about the CYOA is incorrect. If your decisions are in keeping with the style of your tribe's chosen gods, and if you can generally put yourself into the mind of your tribe, the vast majority of your decisions will work out well.

It's an absolute gem of a game.

If any game is over $.99, then you should not buy it because it is a ripoff. All apps should be free, updated every six hours with twenty hours of free content, and should give me a 20% royalty of their gross. I want every app to give me a pony, be the best game ever designed, have the best art and graphics, and cure cancer.devil

I hate how whiny developers are: "We need to be paid to make games" "Updates take time" "Stop spitting in my face." Developers are whiny whiny whiny. Whatever, it is the app pirater arrrh like me who matter. I have this fantastic free app that lets me torrent other apps. IT IS FANTASTIC! This lets me get around the fact that Apple and these lazy developers want to steal my money by making me PAY for games.

In all seriousness, shake you guys would spend fifty to sixty five dollars on a board game, what's wrong with ten dollars for an amazing IOS app?

King of Dragon Pass initially really sucked me in and I had a ton of fun for, say, the first 2-3 hours of the first game. But at some point the game hit a steady state and it wasn't clear where things were going and what the hell you were supposed to be doing. Growing your clan? Trading? Questing? You know you're supposed to be working towards building a tribe, but it's not clear (even after reading the manuals) how you're supposed to be doing that. Then you get a tribe, cool, where to next? Becoming King I guess, but once again you're treading water, doing stuff you hope will be useful, hoping the game will reward you. OK, fine for a game that takes a few minutes to play, but killing time for an hour hoping the game will go somewhere only works for a bit.

Also, the cool choose-your-own-adventure events became repetitive even within just a couple games.

Lastly, while the interface for the iOS is probably as good as can be expected, it still leaves you hanging and without access to critical information when you need it - like how many goods or cows you actually have in total when making gifts. Also, some important aspects of the game - like farmer/hunter management - are opaque.

In all, I felt this was almost a great game, but after the first couple hours of fun you get from the novelty and the RPG elements, the pace of advancement was just too slow and too repetitive and you got too bogged down in micromanagement which wasn't that interesting.

I'm sure the game will find an audience, because there are a lot of fun elements, and the iOS is a great platform for this sort of game (you can just play a couple years when you have the chance). But the pacing really needed to be tighter, the goals clearer, and the micromanagement streamlined.

While I tend to be more gun shy about 10$ games this one sounds well worth the cost... But I do all my gaming on an iPad and games that have to be doubled in size tend to really irritate me. That is the primary thing keeping me from buying it.

I played this for many hours on the PC and Mac, and have played many more hours on the iPad. You don't need to wait for a Universal release; the graphics are wonderful on my iPad2 in 2x mode. The gameplay is not impacted at all.

The game balance has been tweaked in this new version so that it is much harder to get your clan into an economic "death spiral". Likewise if the entire Pass is attacking you, there are ways to make peace with everyone. If you really want to drive your clan to destruction, you can still do it via a several seasons of following the bad advice your Trickster gives you. But then, you could go back to a save point a few years previous and try again.

Finally, a lot of effort went into porting the game to iOS. The basic game engine is still there, but the UI? Most of the graphics were tweaked and a whole new touch interface added. Voice control is now being added.

Nothing wrong with it at all. However, when other comparative alternatives are $5 or less, I'm going to go with them. All things equal, of course. If this game was especially intriguing, it would move to the top of my queue.

This exactly.

I admittedly have to reality check myself when I consider holding off for a sale when a game is 3$ but it is what the market is. There are tons of games out there that have quality gameplay and are cheaper. I have played tens of hours of Ascension and that had multiplayer and single player and cost less than 6$. I have played hundreds of matches of Disc Drivin for 3$.

The fact those exist, unfortunately, makes it so other games have to compete on quality or price.

I'm easy though. If it is universal, appears to have good gameplay, and costs less than 12.99 I typically get it.

The developers have started emphatically that this will not be happening.

The reason given is the art assets: they are, apparently, the originals from the '90s, and they were saved at a small size and a ridiculously low resolution by a group of folks who weren't very forward-looking. Blown up to match the iPad's resolution, the art would, from the sound of it, be a real eyesore. So ... no iPad version.

And re: price, value, and the endless "it's like two trips through the drive-thru!" arguments:

There's simply no chance that this will ever rise to the top of my purchase queue. Ten bucks, ancient text-based gameplay, and not universal? Sorry, no; never going to happen.

There's always going to be newer, flashier, universal, and far less expensive games that keep Dragon Pass from rising to the top. I've had it on my AppShopper wishlist from Day One ... and there it sits. Meanwhile, I've lost count of the other purchases I've made, and I'm already having to budget for later this fall (Ascension expansion, Summoner Wars, something from Codito, maybe Loot & Scoot, etc., etc.).

It costs me nothing to have AppShopper store this item for me ... and, perhaps, notify me of the universal update ... or the price drop ... or both. Until that day comes, I'll be passing on all $10, text-heavy, iPhone games.

But that's kind-of the point. There *are* no "comparative alternatives". Sure, there are plenty of games that are just as interesting, fun, and challenging... but not in the same way. It's sad that there is group of folks who would end up loving KoDP, but will never experience it because it's so "ridiculously priced".

But that's kind-of the point. There *are* no "comparative alternatives". Sure, there are plenty of games that are just as interesting, fun, and challenging... but not in the same way. It's sad that there is group of folks who would end up loving KoDP, but will never experience it because it's so "ridiculously priced".

Sorry, my fault in not articulating that point. Comparative alternative = just as interesting, fun, and challenging.

Almost all iOS apps fall into one of two categories for me: must have and general want. For example, when Scribblenauts came out a little bit ago, it was a must have. Didn't matter if it was $5 or $10 or probably even $15 (it was 5) because I HAD to have it. Many of you obviously feel that way about this app. Most apps go into the "general want" category. Those are basically in a queue whose purchase order is mostly determined by price.

Agreed that it is not for everyone. I love that it is text based, because that means it generates a story. Literally. As in, when the game is over you get an e-mail with history of your tribe, documenting the decisions and outcomes of your actions as recorded by the tribe sages (while abbreviated from game play it hits all the major events and outcomes). You can then read it as a story later.

Likewise, it does far better for me than any other game has at presenting really morally gray decisions. Combine that with the fact that your culture has moral views that are internally consistent, but foreign to modern sensibilities, and you have a very interesting exploration of the consequences of your actions.

It is absolutely not for everyone. And, frankly, you do need to commit significant effort to even learning the game. Not sure if that aligns to the cost of entry.

I won't wade into the iOS pricing debate, (although the UK gets the usual 'rounded up' price conversion to £6.99), but I am glad Brad brought this to my attention. The current price is a little steep for something that might not float my boat but I'd certainly pick it up if a price drop came around.

I'll spend more on complex software that qualifies as a tool, like a really complex music sequencer, but I haven't found any games that I would drop ten bucks on. Yet.

I keep trying to export my paypal records to figure out how much I've spent on apps. Part of me is glad that the export function is broken, as I'm afraid of how much I've spent.

I still have my PC version, and love this game. It is the only game that has been on my HD (and actually played pretty consistently) for almost 15 years! (yikes!)

If there were an Android version, I would be all over it. If you like deep sims with lots of flavor and personality this is the game for you. Also, for you RPGgeeks, this game takes place in Glorantha, the world of Rune Quest.

Please note, the iphone version is the only version currently planned. The developer, ASharp, is not getting the artwork redone for ipad resolutions. I do not recall completely what his reasons for the art are. That said, the game looks just fine at 2x on the ipad and the hours I've put in to it make it fully worth the current price.

The developer would make more money by dropping the price to 99c and shifting 20x the units.

I find it kind of sad how the free/dollar iphone game seems to have set the standard for ios pricing.

King of Dragon Pass is an incredible game at a great price. I would have thought that a forum filled with people willing to drop $60 + for a board game and $30+ for expansions would have welcomed a $10 with incredible depth and replayability.

Agree. The problem with paying so much is you don't know if it will 'float your boat'. Now, if I could return it if it were bad, that'd be different.

Apple and oranges.

Boardgames aren't digital games. And your FLGS isn't the App Store. Two different beasts, entirely.

At the App Store, 10 bucks in considered premium pricing. In this case, it's a premium price for an iPhone-only, text-based, CYOA game ported from an ancient property. The developer is actually pretty ballsy; when it's possible to get Real Racing for $4.99 (and often less), or any of three dozen boardgame conversions for $7.99 or less, asking $9.99 for something like this is some combination of brilliance, ambition, stubbornness, and delusion.

Whether or not that means they'll shift more than 300 copies remains to be seen.

I suspect they already have shifted more than 300 copies. Otherwise, this would have already been abandoned. The developer laid out his pricing reasoning in a blog post shortly before KoDP came out: Money Talks.

Played this on the pc. It is definitely worth the $10 people. I hope it shows up on gog.com in the near future. Most old games still sell between $5-$10. The price point seems to have become the standard for re-releases of old titles.

Didn't think I'd ever see this game again.

They already have.

I won't comment on their pricing strategy, but just note that King of Dragon Pass is and remains a great game - one of the few that has remained constantly on my PC HDD for more than a decade. It is a deep, very fun game that should be enjoyed by most people who enjoy mixing strategy gaming with RPG elements.

KODP is most enjoyable when one stops thinking solely in terms of game and game strategy, and starts thinking like an Orlanthi. That is where the game really shines.

I mostly play this on iPad, looks ok in 2x mode, so no need to wait for an universal version, if you are interested. And these returning app pricing discussions are ridiculous, when I think about the amount of money I've shelled out in past years for PC, Mac and NDS games comparatively... Board or electronic games, the only thing that matters is how much do you want to play it or are you just a collector who gets the kick out of pressing the BUY NOW button.

What is the allure of Scribblenauts? Maybe I just don't get it... I got it from all the RAVE reviews... there are TONS! But for the most part - I just haven't found the game... ummm... well FUN.

EDIT - I will also add - I have played through 3 of the worlds... I understand there are 6? I think? (at work... don't want to look right now.) But I am halfway through the game...

I got this when it first came out about a month ago. I had never heard it, but was intrigued enough that I took the plunge for $10. I have played 3 games, lost each one, but have progressed much farther each time. I probably have like 12 hours played on this game.

When I spend $1 (.99) on an app, I really only have an expectation of about an hour of entertainment. Anything beyond an hour is just bonus. If you think about all of the entertainment you buy, I think you would see that $1 for 1 hour is a good deal.

So if a game costs $10, I expect to get $10 hours of playtime. This game has easily given me that already. So it is a good value.

The PC original was awesome...Glorantha (of Herowars/heroquest/Runequest rpg fame) is fantastic mythical bronze age world and this game gives you a great taste of that setting as you play a load of barbarians.

Its an expensive app for sure, its also a shame its not iphone and ipad scaled...however it looks like good value and i will have to see about picking it up as a portable version sounds fab

ps
I wish they could to a free trial version, in fact a ps3 and xbox arcade version might be cool

If you go to their website I believe there is a PC and Mac demo you can play.

While I can understand this app creates an interesting discussion on price sensitivity, one should not confuse ones discomfort with the price with their actually being a problem with the price. So you won't pay it, congratulations? The market will take care of itself.

I'd happily pay $10 if it was iPad friendly, I'm still considering it but have yet to take the leap in the current format.

Additionally, after 6 weeks in the App Store sales for King of Dragon Pass have already exceeded the entire lifetime sales of its original production run by 50%.

So I think the naysayers are a bit off target here.

Maybe the app is worth $10 to some of you. 99% of apps in the app store drop their price or go on sale eventually. If you want to spend $10 for the app, that's fine. I'd prefer to wait for the price to drop. I know we're only talking $2 - $5 difference here. But there are alot of apps out there and a ton of good boardgame titles coming out on iOS. That extra $ can add up pretty quick. Nothing wrong with budgeting for apps where it makes sense. If an app is released that I really want, I may pay full price to get it right away. King of Dragon Pass is intriguing, but not enough for me to drop $10 on it as it is right now. But it is intriguing enough for me to add it to my App Shopper wishlist and wait for the price to drop. If a year goes by and it never drops, I may reconsider and pay the $10.

I certainly understand this point of view. I jumped at the app on the first day of availability specifically because I wanted to support the developers. It is of course reasonable to think it might come down in price in the future. It is pretty obvious folks here have different app buying habits. I'm guessing that those who want $1 or $3 apps probably buy more frequently than the one app every 2-3 weeks pace that I seem to be on.

De gustibus non est disputandum.

KoDP is the best CRPG I've played. Roleplaying game in this sense doesn't mean monster-hack, or puzzle-solving, or even saving the princess. It means learning to think like people who are fundamentally different from you. It's the only game I know of that tests your wisdom.

It's not an analytical efficiency game. There usually isn't a right answer, or a formula to ever-greater success. You really have to internalize the culture, values, and myths of the Orlanthis to do well.

As such, KoDP isn't as accessible, and will never be as popular, as all the $2 throwaway apps that sell in the hundreds of thousands. But it's genuinely unique. And I've had it on my hard drive for 10 years, and played it for more than 100 hours.

I don't valuate games on how much other games cost, or what other people will pay for them. I valuate games by how much pleasure I get from them. And there are few games - PC, boardgame, or otherwise - that have given me as much pleasure as KoDP.

You've never played phone games then? Just kidding... in the "phone world" a "typical" game app ran from .99 cents to $1.99 a year ago. This year "typical" prices are still around there but other games are going for $4.99 or so.

$10 is asking way too much, just like Square-Enix asking $15 for old FF games.

Possibly true, if doing so would shift 20x the units. That's a mighty big assumption for such a specialty product.

Given the setting (Glorantha, the old RuneQuest RPG's game world), and given the fanatical following of many Glorantha fans, I'm betting it's a smart move. I ran RQ back in the day, and owned the PC version of this game. I'm sure a lot of their sales are either to RQ fans, or folks who are interested in the deep story and unusual setting. Both are likely to shell out $10, and neither are the mainstream camp of 99¢ only purchasers.

I bet they'll make more money doing it this way, possibly even more if they do later lower the price. Those that purchased early get early access, so I wouldn't feel bad for 'em.

Oh yeah - there are quite a few games I have that are iPhone only, that I just play pixel doubled. I always appreciate ones made for the iPad more, but I would suspect for many (most?) it's not a deal-breaker.

I played the game plenty of times back in "the day" on my PC. I have been seriously considering buying an iPod Touch simply to play this game, but I just can't quite justify a couple of hundred dollars for the game. More than the money, though, I just can't see myself carrying around a whole new gadget just to play a single game.

If it were out for the Android, not only would I buy it for myself, I'd buy it for a half-dozen friends, too. It's that good.

That said, though, they really ought to come out with a trial version. From a business standpoint, it just makes sense.

I think the challenge with a trial version is the way the app store handles reviews. Honestly, I think that if you had this game up in a free version it would have a pretty low average review rating. Both because of folks like in this thread down rating it because they think the full version is priced too high, and also because anyone who is looking for a traditional iPhone RPG may have a totally different type of game in mind. I like this game a lot, but it is definitely not the next Angry Birds.

I'm honestly not sure how this is best handled. Perhaps best would be if they could have an html5 web app trial version of the game, but of course that is big development cost.

Master of Magic would be incredible.

I can't believe I hadn't even thought of that possibility before.

Would it be interesting to play this game with 5 games opening at the same time, taking different routes and see if there are differences in real term over the development of the story?

This lets me get around the fact that Apple and these lazy developers want to steal my money by making me PAY for games.

In all seriousness, shake you guys would spend fifty to sixty five dollars on a board game, what's wrong with ten dollars for an amazing IOS app?

All kidding aside comparing the price of an iOS game to a physical one (or even a videogame) is nonsencial. Both of those other items can be shared by loaning them to a friend, or can be resold. Neither of which is true of a game you play on your phone. So due to that and likely other reasons they are worth less than physical boardgames or videogames as a result. The upside for the developer is they have no physical distribution costs at all and they have access to millions of customers basically for free.

I enjoyed this back in the day although I never finished it. I was excited to see it come to iPod, which is a nice way to play it. You don't often see games of this depth for iOS. It's sort of like a civ game where you are managing different aspects of a stone age tribe (agriculture, religion, exploration, diplomacy, warfare) but it's intertwined with events that happen to specific named people in your tribe.

A particular aspect I enjoy is the optimization of the clan ring (There are several candidates for various positions, each with scores in various skills like animals, combat, leadership, etc. They also each follow a particular god which might help your tribe as well. These characters will also age throughout the game and sometimes die.) I wonder if there are any boardgames that have a similar "roster management" type aspect to them.

I guess for people whining about a game being more than a buck, we should congratulate Apple for diminishing the value of quality products.

Nobody seems to appreciate a quality app.

To the people thinking nothing should cost more than a $1 in the app store my question is: So you would really rather buy ten crappy crap-wares that have been shoveled out by the finest shovel-ware companies, than buy 1 quality app that will be used for many hours, if not the entire life of the phone?

Price and "quality" are determined by the market, not Apple.

This is an economic ridicule. Market is made by people, for the people and by the people. So essentially both terms refer to the same. However, when someone (like Apple) determines the retail price, it is surely cost-driven - a certain % on top of the cost to manufacture. Only then, the product and its price are being tested in the market.

Oh please. Are you really honestly saying that price is an indicator of how good a game is? The dollar game is therefore shovel-ware? At what point does a game graduate to no longer being derided? 2$? 5$? Or is 10$ your magical price point for a real game?

No that isn't what I'm honestly saying, but I can see how you can interpret it that way.

Quality and crap come at all price points on apple and google app stores. It does seem more crap than quality is available for free or a dollar, but there are gems.

price is not indicator of quality but it can be an indicator of development effort. It would certainly signal something worth looking into.

To arbitrarily dismiss an app because it costs more than a dollar seems absurd to me or vise-versa. Great game apps come at all sorts of price points. King of Dragon Pass happens to be a good game that is worth what it is asking in comparison to the general competition.

It does appear I misunderstood your statement. Thanks for the clarification!

And I agree, it does bother me when folks arbitrarily refuse to even look into a game simply because it is over a dollar. I had friends who wouldn't even look at Ascension or Ghost Stories - both of which are good games but weren't a dollar. It is frustrating that the race to the dollar price point might force ads into all games or simply kill off many more developer intensive games.

10$ in the app store is a big bold price. 10$ when there is no light version to see what you think is even bolder. I think of things like Carcassonne that are 10$ now but started out cheaper (and are universal) so at lest curious consumers had an opportunity to bite at a cheaper price point.

All that being said, all the love Dragon Pass has been getting and all the folks saying it was worth every penny of 10$ convinced me to jump immediately on the sale price of 6$. If it is as deep as everyone says then that price point is one with which I am comfortable.

Who knows though, maybe I will play it, love it, and be willing to have bought it for 10$ or more!

I just wish it was universal.

edit: And I just realized that it was reduced because today is its 12 anniversary. Today is also my 12th anniversary... so I pretty much am required to buy a game that literally came out on my wedding, right?

Same here. The price drop was just what I needed to make the jump on a game that I had no previous experience with. After about 6 hours of playing this game, I can confidently say it was well worth the price.

I agree. I have probably about the same amount of time in the game and am really enjoying it. I understand the comments from before.

So now the 10$ price point isn't terrible... if there was a lite version. I really think a lite version that has the tutorial and maybe one year past the tutorial of free play would do wonders for getting new players. To keep folks from simply replaying the tutorial instead of buying the game they would probably want to restrict the choices to what the tutorial requires.

Just got it cause of this... overall impressed... but barely into it. The reading is enjoyable.

Better nab it now if you want it on a sale! Lest you have to wait a year for the 13th birthday!

FYI here is the blog for the games iOS development.

http://kingofdragonpass.blogspot.com/

They are considering an iPad version. Also they are trying to figure out how to do a lite version. The app store supposedly prohibits "test versions".

Late to this discussion because I've only just purchased an iPad and the app.

I have a long love of Glorantha from years of playing Runequest in my misspent youth. I have never found a gaming world as detailed, rich and immersive as Glorantha because it is designed not just as thin backdrop colour to adventure and story, but first and foremost as a study in alternate mythology, anthropology, history and culture. The gaming takes life from this and it was the most rewarding and "real" gaming experience I've ever had. My roleplaying days are long behind me but I still read Glorantha material every now and again, just for interest and nostalgia.

I was aware of this game for a few years but have never been much of a computer gamer. Seeing it was available for my new device, I took the plunge.

Even though it's an iPhone app, at 2x size on my iPad I don't see a problem. It's not a graphics rich or animated proramme, so I don't understand why it would be an issue. It seems to me it functions as a universal app.

The cost? Quibbling over the principle of a few dollars seems irrelevant if you have a genuine interest in the game. As a lover of Glorantha, I got my money's worth just from reading the manual and background information. It may have basic and dated graphics that many might consider ludicrous for the price but I think these are irrelevant to what the game is about. I've only just started playing but its open ended, non-linear play is wonderful......and it is superbly detailed and faithful to the canon and spirit of Glorantha. I feel like I'm playing Runequest again

For anyone who wants an opportunity to experience the most detailed, intelligent, fully realised and magical fantasy world ever created, KoDP looks to be a great introduction....worth five times the asking price for me because I'll get ten times the value out of it that I will any gaming app half the price.

Brent.

As long as your iPad and iPhone are registered to the same iTunes account you should be able to find it in the app store on our iPad and the button should say "Install" instead of "Buy." That will let you download it for free on the iPad.

Saved games won't carry over but you will have the game on both devices for that one time purchase fee.

I'm pretty sure any app purchase is good for five different devices on the same iTunes account.
