October 18th, 2011

After grabbing a quick dinner at El Senorial (one of the best Mexican restraunts in town) I got home so we could game. Last night it was Mike, Chris, Timm and myself. With four we had our choice of just about any game. So as we were making a decision, Mike asked about playing something obscure. So I pulled down Tal der Könige, an auction/area control game from 1992. This game was one of my grails before I managed to acquire it after about four years of lusting over it. I had not played it before so I thought, perfect. So we broke it out and set it up. It has a triangle board and is in a triangle box (a pisser to store) and huge, chunky, wood cubes. The game looks awesome. The rules were basically on two sheets of paper and very straightforward. Not many rules at all. But damn, what a thinky game. The blind bidding is intense as there is bluffing mixed in with the bidding. You are bidding on cubes to build pyrmaids with. After you win your blocks, you then move your overseers to get into position to build, then you move your workers to actually build. Any blocks you do not use to build with (and it happens) go into the middle on the big pyrmaid (I'm spelling this wrong) which drives the end of the game once it's built. Doesn't take that long either. Bidding and brainburny. Good stuff. Mike won with 11, Chris had 10, I had 4 and Timm had 1. So very glad I got to play this one.

After that, none of us wanted to play anything that was deep thinking (Medina was mentioned). We played Dominion and as always, had Intrigue and Seaside mixed in. It was a tough draw as it seemed to take us a bit to get money going (I never did). The Embargo card was used to it's fullest to where if someone grabbed a Province, they took two Curse cards. That mixed in with the Masqurade (bad spelling today), the Curse cards were flying around the table. The game ended with the Nobles, Duchys and Estates were gone. Chris had 43, Timm had 34, I had 32 and Mike 19.
