What's your gateway game of choice?

Having played several simpler games of recent, and simultaneously benefiting from drawing the interest of one of my children, I have a very positive outlook on a few "gateway" games that I'd like to share.

bluetaj: A friend of mine came by recently with a copy of Forbidden Island - I had never heard of it and I'm always excited to try something new. I was quickly amazed at how enjoyable the game was, despite the clearly simplified rules system and game-play. Everyone who played immediately and naturally fell into a comfort zone, including several of my group's spouses and children (and my own for that matter!). It's a 100% cooperative game, which allows for easy assistance to new players, and it provides a great feel of "are we going to make it?!... if we can just hold out for one more turn I think we'll have it!!" Game-play is under 1/2 hour, and setup is also extremely quick - very accessible game and tons of enjoyment for all.

browntaj: After playing a dozen or so games of Forbidden Island with different audiences, I did some searching and learned that Pandemic is essentially the same game, just with a bit more depth of game-play. I have purchased both Pandemic and its expansion, but have yet to play a game - should be this weekend. After reading the rules though, I think I can say it wouldn't serve as quite as good a gateway game, given the additional rules, choices, and game mechanics involved. Of course your mileage may vary - each gaming group is different!

maroontaj: I'd also like to note that I've been playing a lot of Dominion lately, and I would absolutely classify it as another great gateway game. Many couples in my gaming group are playing it regularly, and the - shall we say "less gaming-inclined" - partners tend to be the ones pushing to play it more. Highly recommended - great game, great strategy, and fairly easy to learn and get into. Games are also nice and short (can play 2 games in one hour usually!).

tantaj: Finally, RoboRally and San Juan deserve mention here as well. Both are fairly simple rules-wise (with San Juan probably having the most complex rules of any of the games discussed here, but still simple enough to teach newer players), and both are fast paced and fun. Important to note that San Juan's older brother, Puerto Rico, is absolutely NOT a good gateway game, though it is one of the absolute best strategy games ever created.

Going back many (MANY) years, I reflect on what my gateway games were. Now keep in mind I was already an uber-geek, so when I came across an old copy of Risk I immediately took to the multitude of pieces, the strategic map, etc. - after playing it one or two times I was hooked, despite the 8+ hour game time that game could demand! Risk truly was my first and most profound gateway game (however, I would not recommend Risk as your gateway game of choice!). From there I eventually stumbled upon Nuclear War, and finally Munchkin - indeed, Munchkin could still serve as a decent gateway game for gaming newbies. Warhammer 40k was somewhere in the middle of that timeframe, but given the topic of this blog post there's no reason to talk further about that beast of a game!!

So what was the gateway game that got you into the wonderful world of gaming? What's your gateway game of choice nowadays to draw others in? SPEAK TO ME!!

Peace. Or war... whichever.

Settlers of Catan was the spark of my interest, but many years later Space Hulk 3rd edition hooked me.

I was almost going to mention Settlers. That's another good one to pull in a broader audience, though I think it's at the limit of what can be classified as a gateway game - the rulebook is significant, and so I believe an accomplished gamer does need to first own, understand, and teach the game to newcomers.

I also ordered 7 Wonders, which I get the sense might be another good one to kick things off with. Will let you all know soon!

I think Ticket to Ride is an excellent gateway game. A few reasons:

- The rules are very simple to learn (it's even simpler to explain than Dominion, for example).

- The game is visually appealing and the theme is fun but won't scare off non-nerds.

- The strategy goes pretty deep. Obviously it's not the heaviest game out there, but it has a really fun learning curve and there is a pretty large gap between the best and worst players.

Glad you reminded me about that one Chris - I had heard about that but never tried or even seen it before. I believe my friend owns it and I should be gaming with him and his wife this weekend - will ask about it!

I'll second Ticket to Ride, Forbidden Island, Settlers of Catan, and Dominion as all being excellent choices, but I'd throw in recent favorite of mine Rattus as well. Carcassonne and Zooloretto would probably also work well depending upon the audience.

Nuke War is always great!
RoboRally always seems to perk interest as well
of course it is hard to tell, since you have to know who the audience is and what they might like ...
I recently got Pandemic and Forbidden Island (not been able to play them yet)

please post about the 7 Wonders, I thought about getting it
may have to look at the Ticket to Ride

I'm hoping 7 Wonders will come in tomorrow so I can try over the weekend. What I really like about it is it's another game that scales up to 7 players - only BSG satisfies that large a crowd right now, except for The Resistance (supports up to 10) but that's more of a party game experience. I am definitely interested to find more games of depth that support 7 to 10 players - they're definitely hard to come by!

If you like BSG and the way it scales to many players, you might also like Shadows Over Camelot. I haven't actually played BSG, but I hear the two games are very similar and Shadows scales up to 7 very gracefully (or 8 with expansions). As a bonus, the production and artwork are _really_ nice.

I often use Stone Age as a gateway game. Lots of pretty bits and a plethora of dice often are popular draws for newcomers to the hobby.

Great list

Cosmic Encounter, Dixit, Witch's Brew, Word on the Street, Survive: Escape from Atlantis! has pulled many of my friends into gaming. They said Cosmic was the most fun (even a friend who had never played board games before said it was the best game of the night), and they often request Dixit or Pandemic if they want a more thinky game.

7 wonders is a great game, I love! it. Lots of requests from my gaming group to play it again and again and again. But when I tried 7 Wonders with a different groups of new/non gamer friends and they said it was too complex for them. Tell us how it goes with your group.

Carcassonne and The Amazing Labyrinth were the first "hobby" type games I bought for the family after discovering the wider world of designer games beyond the typical crap in department/toy stores. That was our gateway into boardgaming. That was close to 10 years ago and the choices in boardgaming have only gotten much more diverse and fantastic since then.

There is such an abundance of great games in almost any genre you can think of... truly a great time to be participating in the hobby and hopefully it keeps growing for decades to come.

As a kid I used to play tons of board games like Escape From Colditz, Escape From Atlantis and Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs.
Then HeroQuest came and changed my life forever.
Followed by years of D&D.
Then I was brought back to board games by Arkham Horror.
And if I had to sucker new chumps into playing games now I'd probably choose Forbidden Island or Last Night On Earth depending on their interests. cool

Ahh yes, Last Night on Earth and Invasion From Outer Space are two other good ones. I might classify them similar to Settlers - just on the edge of drawing in new gamers, but still very possible if led by someone who's really good at teaching and leading the game.

My husband and I just got into gaming last month and the three games we purchased were Carcassonne, Forbidden Island and Lost Cities: The Board Game. I LOVE Carcassonne and cannot get enough. My husband really likes Lost Cities. My wishlist is now super long with all of the games we hope to get to eventually! We also considered Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Dominion, and a couple other small card games.

We are loving playing new, fun games together on the weekends!

When my wife and I got into modern boardgames, it was probably Forbidden Island that sealed the deal. I have since had great success with it with non-gamers. Another co-op we enjoyed right away that is easy to pull newbies into is Castle Panic, but ultimately it was too light for me to continue to enjoy (at least the base game). I agree that FI is a better starting point than Pandemic.

I appreciate Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, and The Settlers of Catan, but don't like any of them much. I might try using Carc or TtR as a gateway game. Dominion looks intimidating on the table, but if you can get people past that, and if they don't mind some shuffling, it's a good one.

I would prefer to hold back San Juan, 7 Wonders, and Stone Age until folks have had success with one of the true gateways. For me, a gateway should be simpler than SJ and 7W, and shorter (and simpler) than SA.

Alright - I have an update for everyone.

Played a bunch of games yesterday:
- 7 Wonders (my first plays)
- Dominion
- Pandemic (my first plays)
- Battlestar Galactica
- The Resistance
- Buccaneer (my first plays)

7 Wonders was every bit as good as I hoped it would be - a fantastic game that supports larger crowds than average (up to 7 players for now, but soon the Cities expansion will allow for up to 8 in team play). I agree with Kevin - it's likely not the best gateway game, but it is a great game to introduce folks to after they've been somewhat roped into the world. It's was fairly easy to get used to, and very fun and strategic gameplay (a la Puerto Rico, Race For The Galaxy, etc.).

Dominion is always a crowd-pleaser, and I think I would still endorse it as a good starting point for new players. Perhaps it's on the tail end of acceptable, but it is easy to teach the rules and there are never more than 10 cards out that you need to understand. Perhaps it comes down to a personality / group dynamic thing.

Pandemic was also every bit as good as I expected - it's like Forbidden Island on steroids, though I do not think I would introduce this to a new player - stick with FI for that. However, this is more fun to play than FI - it's got more choices, more intrigue, and more depth. The level of suspense is perhaps equal to FI... both excellent games I would highly recommend!

BSG requires no further explanation - I talk about that more than any other game in my blog. Don't use it as a gateway, plain and simple!

Interestingly, we've been using The Resistance to introduce new players to the scene, and it's worked incredibly well! My father and brother played it on Thanksgiving and really got into it - neither are into any kind of hobby gaming. What's even more interesting is if you're clever about how to do it, that could segue into pulling someone into BSG... eventually. You still need people who are definitely interested in longer gameplay and many rules to understand, but clearly The Resistance is the very heart of what makes BSG good.

Enter Buccaneer!! My friend brought this one over and we played several games - it's a very fun and simple game, and it plays very quick. I put it on par with FI - very fast and easy to get newcomers into, and enough fun and strategy for others to still enjoy. It would absolutely make a great gateway game!!

This reply ended up much longer than expected, so I think I'll turn it into a Gateway Games Part 2 blog post

Gaming rules!!!
Jason

Really, any game that is fun and simple enough for new players to understand could serve as a good gateway game, and pretty much all the titles people have mentioned fit the bill.

Personally, however, I'd like a gateway game to serve a dual purpose--simple and fun to get new players interested, but also strategic and deep enough to keep everyone playing long after being introduced to the hobby. Pandemic, Dominion, Stone Age, and maybe Ticket To Ride all work in both of these ways. To me, Forbidden Island is a good game but really more of a kid's game--it just doesn't have the depth or staying power of Pandemic. Though Pandemic is more complicated, it is still fairly simple to learn the basics, and the game has a crazy amount of depth and staying power. Stone Age may be a little on the complicated side at first, but I've had pretty good luck introducing it to new players, and it certainly has the depth needed to keep even experienced gamers playing.

Definitely Carcassonne. So far, I think I've introduced at least a dozen non-gaming friends to that game. 4 of them bought their own sets already, and of the others there's only one who doesn't like it.

For myself, years ago I played a lot of Settlers of Catan, but it was Carcassonne later on that made me really interested in hobby games.

So I've been playing a bunch of Ticket To Ride lately (iOS version) - wow what a great and addicting game!! I definitely endorse it as a great gateway game, as well as a great game for more experienced groups who want a faster pace game to switch things up with. It's just a very well executed game that creates many moments of "YOU BASTARD!!" (something I personally consider a fundamental litmus test for great games!).

Definitely recommend TTR - I'm going to pick up the full board game next, knowing full well we'll enjoy many evenings with it.
