Tomorrow Advanced Civilization. Any suggestions of a strategy I should use?

Tomorrow it's going to be Adv. Civilization day which is superb! I love the game and I'm willing to find the time to play it 2-3 times during the year. Preparing for the session is like preparing for long lasting sport event (not quite like marathon though which is also near to my heart).

This time I plan to win but I could use some good advice how to do it...

Keep 20 tokens on the board: tokens expand, not city.

I'll do that but I'm a bit worried that tokens are not going to be the route for easy victory.

- work on acquiring 2 or 3 sets of trade cards at the same time.
- try to keep a set of trade cards in your hand from turn to turn. go into a trading round with strength!
- have a clear buying path for Civ cards. Have to be a bit flexible on this, but knowing what you need in trade card points before starting to trade helps a bunch.

- keep a good flow of tokens from board, supply, and money.

- if you have a civ in mind to play, note the terrain around you and have an idea of where you want all your cities, and where you want borders with your neighbors to be.

- depending upon your group, it may be advisable to stop at one of the early barriers on the AST to put you in a better overall position for later. I often find the 2nd barrier (3 colors of civ cards?) is a good place to pause for a turn while collecting much better civ cards.

Most importantly: Have Fun!!!

Thanks for the advice! I'll probably fail in all others accounts but the have fun part is easy to achieve.

Fair enough.

Proper advice:

Remember that the game is won by maintaining a healthy number of cities and that disasters are temporary, if you have bought the right cards.

Take a hard look at the blue cards for the new Civil War effects.

This is probably the key for a solid play but getting there is hard.

Don't fight if you don't have to. If someone is sitting on more than 9 city sites be sure it point out to the other players how greedy they are (unless it is you).

Probably I'll try to take a city or two during the end game but lets see how that works out.

I forget the name of the empire that starts with this, and I don't actually own the game, but one of the empires (the yellow one) has a start zone that has three zones with a 4 and 5 population. One of our players, who shall remain nameless entices other players to take those regions, for their great population while he moves further into Europe.
Because, there will be a calamity that comes out,(either Piracy or Barbarian Hordes, I forget which) which has invaders come into your start zone and start hacking into your population.
But since he's no longer in his start zone, he'll take the calamity, and then the guy in his start zone takes the hit. Pretty effective.

And even though everyone knows about this he can almost always guarantee that someone will move into his start region nad then get hit by the hordes (or piracy).

I don't usually do this, but, if you're going to attack other people it might be a good idea to do a two pronged approach. Instead of going after their cities up front send out your guys to attack their populations. If they don't have enough population they have to start braking down their cities naturally, then after they've been weakened you can spend the next turn taking the cities that have been knocked down or knock down more of their cities and they will need to take a turn or two to build back up, and it will take longer for them to come back to attack you.
Though know that what you have on turn one will be gone by turn 3 because you WILL be hit by calamities and people will do the same thing to you. Usually just holding enough of your own cities is hard to do,so being able to do an assault on someones populatoin might be easier said than done regularly.

Trading....this is where I tend to mess up.

When you have that one off 5/6/7/8 card and someone is trading take into account the point increase they get from going from say 4 to 5 cards of that type vs what you're getting in return. I lost a game on one of my first plays by not trading correctly and giving up my higher cards instead of holding/collecting them. You have to balance what you get vs what you're giving away. if you think that person is getting the last Spice card and you're getting a pair of Salt...is it worth it to you?

If you drew the last card of a set that someone is going for it often pays to have permanent amnesia about it. whistle

In the many games I have played Egypt is rarely the winner. Maybe its because the less experienced players tend to grab for it. That and the two "best" players in the games I've been in (generally my sister and myself) dont often take Egypt even when it is available (Crete is much more interesting to play! As is North Africa - and they can really make Egypt's game more difficult).

I believe that Egypt has about the worst AST position considering the barriers - they hit all of them before anyone else. So very quickly you can become one to two positions behind on the AST - or you will have bought really cheap cards early - and those points can cost you the game in the end.

As Egypt I will gernerally fall behind at the first AST progression (2 cities) and then it's pretty easy going from there. Other players will usually fall behind at some point, so it evens out eventually. Only other thing Egypt has to worry about is the damn floods and if there is no African player, Egypt is just too darn easy.

Attacking against cities is good because you get a bonus card for it. Killing population is just annoying and the only reward is enemies (which obviously also come with destroying cities).

I'm not too good at this either.

I would do the trade if I would have 5 salt already (and maybe a nasty calamity to go with the last Spice).

Playing Egypt can be quite dry after you have the necessary advances.

I wish I was a good enough player to make a useful contribution here.
