Day 9 and it is daughter's turn to pick a game. She chose The Downfall of Pompeii.

The Downfall of Pompeii is a game that oozes theme. We require the players to scream when their people are thrown into the volcano. Both kids have always been able to play this game competitively, so I expected another close game. I rate this game a 9 and tonight was our 16th recorded play on BGG.

The omen cards were fairly evenly divided among everyone and no one was picked on. As a result, everyone had roughly the same number of people in the city when Mt. Vesuvius erupted.

The first few turns of the lava flow did not result in any player deaths, but soon people were dying right and left and exit gates were being blocked by flowing lava. Melissa loss 5 people between two of her turns, effectively eliminating her.

My son and I had the early lead. My daughter trailed everyone but was in good position with her people and started getting several of them out. I knew the game would be close.

The game ended before all the lava was drawn as the final two people were trapped on the board.

We then counted our saved people: Melissa 5, Son 7, Larry 8 and Daughter . . . 8. A tie for first place. The tiebreaker between daughter and me came down to which of us had the fewest people in the volcano. We counted the people. I had 7, daughter had . . . 8. I win on the slimmest of margins, unfortunately.

As Melissa told our daughter, tying your Dad is a win. I agree.

I keep hearing about this game, but have never had the chance to play it. I ranked it a 1 on my wishlist, but my secret santa did not get it for me this year, Maybe next year...

This is a favorite of my family's. It's a quick, tactical game with enough chaos to keep scores close. Plus, throwing your opponents' pieces into the volcano is utterly satisfying, even more so for the kids when they do it to me. We call the Omen cards "oh maaaan" cards.

Just a brilliant family game . Odd really given the subject matter. Nice to see that Carcassonne was not a fluke.
