The December Challenge has consisted mostly of fast playing games with which we were all familiar. Today, we mixed things up a bit, choosing a game that Melissa and I had played only once and the kids had never played. My son had been asking to try this one for a while so I decided to indulge him with a game of Power Grid: Factory Manager.

Power Grid: Factory Manager is a game loosely tied to Power Grid. Instead of manager a power grid, the player is managing a factory, trying to optimize production, storage, and energy costs while improving efficiency. I have not rated this game on BGG and it is only our 2nd recorded play.

I had to spend a bit of time explaining the game but we were soon underway. The 1st turn was still a bit confusing but finally the kids picked up on the play. This type of game is well suited for my son because it is extremely good at math and calculations. Soon he and I were fighting for the lead with the ladies trailing a bit. Daughter in particular, seemed to struggle but finally got the hang of it the last couple of rounds and came on strong.

The fifth and final turn show me with limited workers available. I upgrade optimization but made a miscalculation that proved fatal. I went into the final round with a lead in income and cash on hand, but my son zoomed past me on income.

The final proved to be a bit anti-climatic as I knew he had the game. We counted up the money and I was correct. A well played game by my son and the kids have claimed the last two wins. In fact my last win was on the 13th because Melissa claimed a few wins.

Final Scores: Son 228, Larry 207, Melissa 184, Daughter 170.
