Gaming with the Girl(s)

My oldest daughter is starting to be at the age where she can play games with me that go beyond the typical child fare. This blog is about my experiences with her (and, hopefully as they grow older, her sisters as well).

Although I love Twilight Imperium (third edition), I still like to get ahold of other space-themed games. Honestly, I don't expect any of them to supplant TI3 from my Favorite Games, but even I must be honest - TI3 takes a long time to play, and I don't always have that time to commit. Thus, when I started looking into Eclipse (prodded by a good friend of many years!), I decided it may help scratch the itch in a shorter time. So I pre-ordered it, waited, waited some more, and then waited just a little more.

Because Christmas was approaching, I decided to have it shipped directly to my in-laws, where we are spending a couple weeks, just in case. I'm glad I did, as we would have missed it had I had it shipped home. And that would have just resulted in MORE waiting!

So upon receiving it yesterday, I quickly unpacked it. No, before you ask, it wasn't meant as a Christmas present; another game in the package (Mage Knight: Board Game) is filling that role. But not too long after getting it sorted, I realized... who am I going to play it with right now? My brother- and sister-in-law like playing games as long as they aren't too complex/long (they played TI3 with me once, and while they did well, it was a bit too much for their tastes), but are busy for the next few days. I checked with my wife's cousin, who lives next door, but he had stuff going on. Alas!

But then, remembering a post someone made about playing with their 10-year-old son, I decided to ask my daughter. She's only 9, so I wasn't sure if it would be above her head, but she not only seemed willing, she actually seemed excited about it. Off to a good start.

So we got it out, set it up, and I started explaining the rules. She seemed to get the gyst of it, though I was a bit worried because there were times she seemed to be zoning out. "Uh oh, maybe she isn't ready for this yet." But I decided to press on, and see how she does in the actual game.

Lo and behold... she actually seemed to grasp it pretty well! Now, granted, as a 9-year-old, her sense of strategy and planning isn't super-great yet, but after the first couple rounds, especially, she started putting the various pieces together in her mind, and started getting a good grip on it. She started working towards some big ships to take out the Ancients, and by the end of the game, she'd beefed up her Dreadnoughts and Cruisers enough to take on the GCDS... and won rather handily!

In the end, I still outscored her (35 to 27), but she seemed to be excited to "beat the boss", as she put it. Now, granted, in this particular game it ended up being more of a "race", as it wasn't until Round 9 that we finally got any connections to each other that didn't go through the Galactic Center... and even then, I decided to be nice, as she went gung-ho on the center, leaving one of her hexes undefended. I warned her in the future that I may not be so forgiving though

All-in-all, I think it was a success. And while I would still take TI3 given the time and the right group of players, I definitely feel thus far that Eclipse was worth getting, if nothing else because I have a feeling Kortnee will play with me often!

I game with my 11 year old son and 8 year old daughter. My 11 year old regularly beats me at Dominion, Summoner Wars, Carcassonne, BattleLore, and other such games. I also got Mage Knight: Board Game recently, and am considering the reprinted War of the Ring.

Let us know if you try out Mage Knight: Board Game with Kortnee. I'm still trying to learn it myself, and want to have a good grasp before trying to teach anyone else.

I play Mage Knight with my 4-year-old - we play open though (and cooperative). He's really good at it already. Really, if you play enough fun games with your child, they'll be able to pick up on anything. Last weekend we played 6 games of Agricola and 5 games of Le Havre and he (my 4-year-old!) was new to both and now enjoys them tremendously. Suffice to say that if you hang in there your daughter will be beating you in games like this soon enough!

And of course, more importantly, will be a great partner for games that you want to play but before this could find no one to play with.

My three sons used to love to play games with me. Yes they would win once in awhile when they were young and got better and better as they grew up. I really miss that now that they have thier own families.

We played again today. She wanted to play the Planta (yeah, I know it says not to in 2-players, but I figured it could help even things up), and I was Eridani. Long story short, she won; I just couldn't get any money nearby, and she was just able to tear it up. She's still leery about direct combat, but I think as she gains more confidence in herself and her gaming skills, she's going to be a force to reckon with.

I may give Mage Knight a try with her also. If nothing else, I really want to play the original Mage Knight tabletop game with her (I still have a TON of figures, and my 6-year-old's middle name came from one of the characters).

I taught my 7-year old niece to play Agricola on Saturday night. My wife asked why I was even bothering when I started to teach her. I said "I just want to experiment here." ... She did fine. Yeah, she took last place, but she really liked building her farm. She got a bit fixated on building fences and not much else. But at least she was having fun. The theme of this game can really draw children in.

Very nice! I have two boys (9 and 7) and was thinking it too difficult for them. But maybe we should try it next weekend.

I really can't imagine a 4-year old sitting still for a game of MK the Board Game. How do you do this? And he understands and plays games like Agricola? Some kind of genius I guess?

I say this as a father of a three and a half year old who has a pretty good attention span and is not a demolition derby type.

My two year old is great at Mage Knight, he just doesn't play by the rules as we understand them. In fact it's hard keeping up with the daily Advanced Variants he introduces: like heroes having to source mana from 'Behind the Couch', or the perplexing 'Mysterious Disappearing Cities' rule, or how Orcs have to be placed face up 'In The High Chair', or my personal favourite: 'Where The **** Is The Advanced Actions Deck Now?'

He just turned 5 last week, so there's quite a gap with a 3 year old. He sits still no problem - he loves it. The only problem he does have with attention is if there are more than just the two of us. If he has to wait too long for his turn, he gets bored really quickly. That is also when he quits games (once, but yeah, it surprised me). Generally his attention span is amazing and he sits out the whole game. It's more of a problem that we're not going to play another game of the same right away after it.

His favorites are:

- Lord of the Rings The card game (all expansions included - he knows all cards but can't read...)
- Mage Knight
- Flash Point
- Ascension (on the iPhone - he plays by himself and beats the medium AI regularly)

EDIT: He plays and understands Agricola the family version - remember, he can't read so when there are secret cards it's much more of a problem. We've played Le Havre as well and he's pretty good at that. Games like Ticket to Ride, however, are much more of a problem, because so much depends on the secrecy of one's cards. We've just returned to Memoir as well, but he finds it frustrating to be killed off by me - take that games are not really his thing, it's too confrontational.
