When a friend came over last night with Eclipse, I was interested because it scores so highly on the list of Essen releases, but on the other hand, it has a 30 page rule book and combat in it, which aren't what I'm usually in to. But I decided to give it a shot.

The rules explanation was quite long. I remembered most of it, but I found it quite a bit of information and a couple of small rules I wish they could have left out.
The turn structure is quite easy (perform actions until everyone has passed and then do battle and some maintenance) and the actions are mostly straight forward, although the iconography could have been a bit more helpful here and there. In fact, everywhere the iconography could have been a bit clearer. But once you know what which icon means, it's a pretty straightforward game.
I found this game interesting and engaging and in the end, quite streamlined for the kind of game it is (having played TI3). I didn't love it, but I'd be happy to play again.

Initial rating: 7.5

PS: now I wanna try TI3 again to make a good comparison, it's been 4 or 5 years since I last played TI3!

I own both but haven't played TI3 in quite a while. I have the second expansion and I'm itching to try the scenario which gives me the feeling that it reduces the game duration considerably. If not, I'll definitely use Eclipse for my monthly space empire needs.

I only have the first expansion and don't intend to buy any more. I didn't find TI3 all that long though. A 3 player game clocked in in about 2 hours with my group...

I played Eclipse yesterday too, and got my ass handed to me on a silver platter. It's not a game to play from a quick teach, and I recommend reading the rules thoroughly first, especially after my experience. I really liked the idea of the game, though, and feel it puts TI3 out to pasteur for me anyway.
