Nice post, as usual. I don't normally house rule games, but in Carcassonne I really prefer that a player draws a tile at the end of his or her turn, and keeps it secret until the it gets back around to that player's turn again. This can really reduce the downtime because the player can narrow the choices down significantly while others are placing their tiles.

We play that people draw right after placing as well, but add a second tile to each player's hand (with players who have played before, of course).

This adds a bit more strategy and not too much more "thinking time."
