Welborn Family Gaming

Welcome to Larry and Melissa's blog. We focus on two player gaming and gaming with our two children, ages 11 & 13. This blog will feature random musings, gaming reports and reviews from both of us. We will also post some non-gaming thoughts from time to time. Feel free to join in the discussions.

We finish up 2011 with a big day of gaming with the Welborn family. We start out in the afternoon with a couple of plays of Can't Stop. We then got to our first challenge game of the night, Big City.

Big City is a nice city development game with great components. Sadly, it has been out of print for a while. There has been much talk about Valley Games bringing it back, but don't hold your breath. I rate the game an 8 and this is our 8th play on BGG although we had many more in the early 2000s.

I spent a few minutes explaining the game and showing some examples and we were off building our city. This first game turned out to be a short one as the entire center of the city was filled in without anyone building City Hall. Thus, there were no special buildings or new neighborhoods added. The scores reflected this.

Final Scores: Daughter and Larry 29, Son 27, Melissa 24.

Melissa was irritated that the game ended prematurely and wanted to play again.

This time, she built City Hall on the first turn. Soon the street car was uo and running and special buildings were popping up everywhere. Melissa had a good sized lead, but I was in position to place a few buildings then get down the Shopping Mall for what should have been the win. Then the following happened. Larry place a neighborhood. Melissa build a special building. Larry build elsewhere, draw cards. Melissa, play Central park cutting my building spots in half. Me, trade out dead cards and readjust my strategy by playing a small residential building next to Central Park. Melissa, plop down the square factory, killing me and my son. Well played.

Final Scores: Melissa 89, Larry 65, Daughter 63, Son 60.

It was then time for dinner but there would be more gaming as we waited to ring in the new year.
