Like many people, Settlers of Catan was our gateway game. In fact, I think it might be the first designer game that we bought (as opposed to getting a game as a gift). Settlers of Catan was also my parents gateway game, but they never moved on. They have more or less played the game weekly for the past five years. This means that even though the game does not play well with two, we have all of the main expansions. The question is with all of the other games we have played since we first got Settlers of Catan, is it still a game we like or have we just moved on?
Game Overview
Settlers of Catan is a resource management game. Every turns players roll dice, collect resources based on what is rolled, and then use those resources to build settlements & cities. These structures allow players to get more resources and the cycle continues. One of the best parts of the game is that players can (and our encouraged) to trade resources with each other. This trading aspect allow players to really drive the game and define the experience. Players get points for their buildings, from cards, and special points. The first to get to 10 points win.
The Game We Played
We played a five player game with my parents and brother. We played on the Catan Geographies: Penn-Jersey map. This is a fairly small set up, and was really tight with five players. In fact there were not enough spots for everyone to build everything they needed to get to 10 points just through building. My brother and myself found ourselves in a good spot where we had a lot of number diversity. In fact, I managed to get all of the numbers. Unfortunately for me, my wife blocked me from an available location. The only way I had a chance to win was to get a victory point from a card. Amazingly, that is exactly what happened. All I had to do now was build my last city before my brother could. He did not have an ore source, and I was able to use the commodities from the game to get the resource I needed to pull off the win.

Her Thoughts: I am glad this was our gateway game because it introduced us to other games. I will still play it.
Verdict
Combined Rating: 8
Even though we will not get to play Settlers of Catan very often, it was our gateway game and one that we still like. Settlers of Catan is a game that we will continue to keep.
