Later this month (so really, any day now), Wizards of the Coast will release an app called The Magic: The Gathering Toolbox first on iOS and later on Android. The app aims to be the ultimate game aid for Magic: The Gathering. The app aims to be not only a life counter, but to let you build decks, research strategies, and find events. You'll be able to search and filter all 10,000+ Magic cards, with new card sets automatically added. They say it wil be like having Gatherer, the Magic Card Database, in your pocket. And it will be available free! You can read more about it from Wizards of the Coast.

• Chunky Fighters Coming - January 12
Brad Talton from Level 99 Games contacted us to let you know that an iOS implementation of Nick Hayes's Chunky Fighters is well on its way. Chunky Fighters is a popular print and play game that was born and lives right here on BGG. The game requires the making of 20 custom dice for the base game (and 60 more for its three expansions) relegating it somewhat to niche status. Brad believes the iOS version will help to expose the game and its designer to a much wider audience, and hopefully be the first of many PnP games that make it onto iOS. Here's a recent press release from Level 99 Games:

Quote:
"We at Level 99 Games are excited to announce that we've acquired the rights to create a mobile implementation of Nick Hayes's Chunky Fighters. Chunky Fighters is a lightweight brawling dice game where players form teams of creatures and use dice, strategy, and a fair helping of luck to attack one another down to the last man standing. The game can be downloaded for free and printed from Board Game Geek. Chunky Fighters requires players to assemble or otherwise craft their own dice. With the advent of the digital version, however, anyone can experience this exciting game without the printing and setup costs.

Chunky Fighters will be available on iPod, iPhone, and iPad, and will be downloadable for free. The game will come with the 4 initial characters from Chunky Fighters--Knight, Tentacle Monster, Wizard, and Soldier. Once you've tried and enjoyed the base game, you can show your support for the designer and for Level 99 Games by downloading the three expansion packs for 99 cents each, expanding your Chunky Roster to contain all sixteen available characters!"

• Unofficial Dominion App Launched - January 19
This story broke last week with the stealthy launch, by an outfit known as Hammer Technology, of an app named Dominion by Donald X. Vaccarino which was none other than an iOS implementation of the world famous Dominion by Donald X. Vaccarino. Donald and Rio Grande Game's own Jay Tummelson were quick to get involved in the situation through a number of BGG posts and after a brief time of confusion the issue seems to have been settled by Jay's public statement on the app, posting "as long as it is free, it is allowed, at least for a few weeks until the licensed app becomes available."

In a later post in another thread Jay also updated BGG users about progress on the official implementation of the deck-building favorite. Jay writes that he has "been very pleased with the product the licensee has produced. I have played it using Safari, Firefox, iPad, and iPhone and it works well on all these platforms. I am told it works on others, but that is all I have at my immediate disposal." Jay also mentioned a simple AI, useful for learning the game. He also wrote that he expects it to be available in the "VERY near future."

Knowing developer schedules as we do, we are going to temper excitement a little bit. But given that there is a working and publisher sanctioned app, we'll spend some time with the new app which does feature original art, local games vs up to three AI opponents, and online two player games.

• A Dice Strategy Board Game - ROY G. BIV Updated - January 21
A Dice Strategy Board Game - ROY G. BIV is an app whose release we had missed in early December. It has since been updated five times since. ROY G. BIV is a game app in which two players use 49 7-sided dice and a 7x7 board purportedly "combines the logic of chess, the simplicity of Go, and the risk-reward elements of Poker. It requires players to be able to calculate a variety of possible moves quickly while planning several moves in advance." Sounds like strategy gold, eh? Well you can try it for free.

According to developers Black Ops Marketing, the game really has one rule: "A played die captures/scores any lower value die in the ROW or COLUMN it is played in. The Player scores the total value of all captured dice, and the captured dice change to the value of the played die."

Additionally, this app has some interesting multiplayer features though Game Center including a unique 2 player "game negotiation module" which they say "sets the standard in 2 player gaming." Players get two rounds to negotiate agreed settings. If diplomacy fails, the computer decides the setting randomly.

The app also has a ranking system for two player games where both the winner and loser get leader board points in every game. How much they get is dependent upon how well they played, rewarding great losing play more than easy victories.

Got that? Good. Here's what's in the update:

Quote:
What's new

1. All Variations & 2 Player Games are Free! See you on Game Center!

2. Leaderboard is working correctly for 1 player and two player. We hope...

3. Scoring bug whereby player 2 did not get the correct amount of points on a 1st turn capture has been corrected.

4. The sound issue that turned your ipad or iphone into a sound stun weapon capable of neutralizing people 50 feet away has been corrected. Sorry about that!

5. Large Help - Rules Button on Home Screen.

6. Help screens reordered.

7. Turn Indicator moved from top of screen to dice in hand area for higher visibility.

• Whitechapel Hideout Generator Print Board Game Expansion Released on iOS - January 23
We admit we're not sure we understand how this app works, but we understand that it is supposed to be an Official add-on expansion for the print board games Letters from Whitechapel and Whitechapel™ Letters from Hell and that it is NOT a stand-alone game. Also, it's by iNigma, the developers of the Kingsburg: Serving the Crown app.

This app lets you play the optional rules Hideout Generator and Catch Me, If You Can. With the Hideout Generator, the Jack player can choose his Hideout at random during the point six of the set up rules. It can be played in 4 difficulty levels: Normal, Easy, Medium and Hard.

As far as we know this is the first iOS-only expansion to a print board game that we know of. Do let us know if you have the print game and how this app works with it. The app is for iOS Universal and priced at $2.99.

• Dash Race Updated - January 24
Dash Race is an app we've never covered before. It's appears to be closely related to Bolide and other turn-based racing sim board games. It would appear that developer Hans-Juergen Richstein has given this app a major update. Check out some of the new features, fixes, and improvements:

Quote:
What's new

Thanks for far more than 200.000 downloads to date. This update brings you a whole lot of exciting new features and improvements, see list below.
As always, please renew your 5* rating for every update to keep new features coming. If you have any comments, wishes or issues to report, just drop us a mail. Follow @rombos_de on Twitter to always get the latest news first hand.

New:

• A new control schema: one finger will only operate the target determination, avoiding accidental scrolling (especially useful on iPhone/iPod). To scroll and pinch, use two fingers. If you prefer the old schema, you can switch back to it in the settings (called "Pro" mode).
• Optionally choose triangles as a background grid. This gives a whole new challenge for your driving strategy!
• Make the choosen grid invisible. This will provide an additional thrill for experienced drivers.
• Use a text chat feature in online races to provide messages to your opponents (e.g. if you are not using voice chat for that race)
• A new free track with a "Space" theme
• A whole bunch of new achievements, especially lots of additional Guru-puzzles
• Play your own iPod music instead of the built-in background tunes (switch them off to keep iPod running in background)

Improved:

• Proceed started games after you lost a player's gamecenter connection. Just reconnect them and continue were you left off
• Allow changing number of gamecenter players within Gamecenter invitation dialog. Additional players will use free or robot slots, so to play online you just need to choose at least one Gamecenter player and can then see how many you get actually invited.
• Comprehensive error messages around gamecenter handling in case something goes wrong
• Robots adapt better to rookie drivers
• More balanced scoring in challenge mode, giving more focus on the first passing the finish line and extra penalties on exceeding the winner's number of total moves
• Switching off device's sleep mode during GC matching to allow for longer automatch procedures, making it more likely to find players

Fixed:

• Switching voice chat on from within the game sometimes failed
• Printing of tracks from iPad
• Don't autoscroll to focus current player while panning or zooming
• General stabilizations, especially around Gamecenter handling

I feel bad for the guy who made the free Dominion app. People have been dragging his name through the mud claiming it was a knock-off, but I think it's more of an embarrassment for Tummelson and Rio Grande.

The guy asked permission from Rio Grande, and they gave it with the stipulation it must be free (and exist only until RGG at some point releases an in-house app). The fact that they didn't follow up with these people they gave permission to, when the official app is mere weeks away, speaks to the effort being mismanaged.

Then again, you can always go back to the "there's no such thing as bad publicity" adage. Everyone and their brother on BGG knows an official Dominion app is on its way now.

I think the game is great. Its a solitaire game. Its has strategy, lots of decision making, with a random/luck factor thrown in. Easy to play and its fun to try to beat your high score. I haven't tried the new release yet, but it sounds like its going to be even better in particular at tracking your scores and others and trying to beat them.

The lack of equivalent Android announcements is just disheartening.

I'd even feel some encouragement from "Kindle Fire"-only support.

If you have the original make sure you download the new one while it's free because the old will not be up-datable.

Will there be an HD version down the road? Or is there a chance this version will receive an update to make it universal?

I would love a native iPad version/universal version for tabletop same device play.

I think you'll like it. I'm almost through with the campaign, and I've been very impressed so far.

About the only thing that's missing is a satisfactory multiplayer solution. Right now, you can match up with random FB people, but that's not cutting it for most people. They need to add the ability to play specific people from your friends list.

It is a fun game. I have played it a time or two with my wife. She really enjoys playing the detectives and I play the killer. I am terrible at that part so she has won every time.

It is fun though. I like it thematically more than say Scotland Yard (which has a similar play mechanic) but not quite as much as Clue the Museum Caper.

I will have to watch videos on the app when I am at home. I have no idea how it would work with the tabletop game.

The Dominion app works but it's not very exciting as a game. It's quiet and simple, but fast. I've beat it with big money a few times. I'm hoping the official game will be more exciting.

On the other hand, the Caylus app is great. It's very fun and has actually helped to improve my game. It could use some polish but once you get used to the interface it all comes together. Highly recommended.

The AI is pretty decent, though not being able to play with more than one opponent is the app's major flaw.

No one knows anything. DoW is very cagey with its future plans.

SW does seem to have been completely forgotten. They haven't even added a simple 3-player map, let alone online multiplayer. Sad, really. Cobwebs have grown on my copy.

GMT update today (sounds like DS is getting close...):

Dominant Species (iOS): We had a longer than expected delay getting the updated art ready, but now it is implemented and we are restarting testing. We'll be contacting a new batch of testers shortly.

Now that we have the new art in place, we are ready to start working on the tutorial. We'd love to have some talented volunteers to help with this - what we believe is a crucially important piece on an iOS platform, and most especially for a game with the depth of choices offered by Dominant Species. So, if you have skills and/or experience with creating quality tutorials and would like to help, please drop me a note. Thanks!
----------
Dominant Species: The Card Game (iOS): This one has progressed nicely over the past few months, and we are ALMOST ready for some additional testing. If you have an interest, please let me know.
----------

Still in the early stages (Various stages of creating look and feel and getting map, counter, and card art in place):

Empire of the Sun (iOS and Android): This is one somewhat stalled at the moment. We're having conversations with the programmer now regarding whether this is really the best of Mark's games to start with - looking at For the People and Washington's War as well.

Manoeuvre (iOS and Android): This is one of the games where real life has intervened. It'll probably be a couple more months before we see progress here.

Nightfighter (PC and iOS): This project is progressing nicely, with the added good news from Fred last week that they're intending both a PC and an iOS release of the game for concurrent (or close) release. My best guess is this will be the next game to progress to the "outside test" phase, within 2-3 months.

Winds of Plunder (iOS): This one was somewhat stalled by real life and by some issues with the cards. We're working with the programmer to help get the card issue fixed, then we can move forward to game functionality.

Pacific Typhoon (Android): Looks like we're at least a few months from having a playable/testable version of this one.

Space Empires (iOS and Android): No recent word from this development team on progress. Still quite a ways from testing, last I heard.

The Caucasus Campaign (iOS); This is is a longer-lead project. Haven't seen any samples of the Map, Counters, or UI yet.

Sekigahara(iOS): This is a new-to-the-list game since our last update. This developer offered to show us what they could create if we'd give them an opportunity. We said "sure." Their progress reports sound encouraging, and we're supposed to get a demo to evaluate within a week or so.

On iOS many people actually pay for their apps, while on android almost every app is simply stolen.

Believe it or not, this affects the motivation of developers to bring their games to certain platforms.

Unofficial dominion app;

1) Reasonable AI
2) Keeps stats
3) Easy interface

We'll see how the official app fares in comparison.

Well, that would explain the two billion Android apps sold through the Market. All us Android owners are thieves. Meanwhile, here's a quote from an actual Android developer:

Quote:
So, overall the android version of my app makes about 75% of its iPhone equivalent. This is significantly better than I expected.

One more data point. The android app is currently about 250ish overall top paid, and the iPhone version is 350ish. Take from that what you will.

Some quick observations about android from an iOS developer's perspective:

1) I think developing quality apps is easier on iOS. I'm actually a Java/.NET developer by profession so I should naturally be biased toward Android. But once you get past the initial learning curve, I think that Cocoa Touch APIs get you 90% of the way there, whereas Android APIs get you about 30% of the way there. That is to say, if you want a lot of the nice UI touches you're used to on the iphone, you'll have to spend much more effort getting there on Android. The main advantage I feel Android has is memory management, but the reference counting method that Objective-C uses is second nature once you are familiar with the fundamentals.

2) Android gives you REAL TIME sales analysis. This is pretty incredible. Yes you can somewhat simulate this on iPhone using 3rd party analytics, but being able to see the moment someone bought your app just brings my obsession with checking sales and stats to another level. You also get your daily reports much sooner (about 12:30AM PST as opposed to 5-6AM PST).

3) Android market screws up orders quite a bit. In fact, almost 20% of all orders are declined or cancelled due to some android market error. After checking forums, it seems like this is not unusual. Now, I don't know if this means I have 20% lost sales, but still disturbing nonetheless. In android's defense, apple actually never gives you this level of detail. To my knowledge, you don't know if users can't buy your app due to an app store error. But judging from the fact that we get e-mails about this issue every other day on android and I've never gotten a single e-mail about this in the past 15 months I've been on the app store is very telling. Google has GOT to fix this. Developers lose, customers lose, and google loses.

In conclusion, I feel like the Android Market has really come into its own. The common wisdom that android owners do not pay for apps is demonstrably false. They may not pay as much per user for apps as iPhone owners, but the enormous marketshare Android commands is just too much to ignore.

By the way, you may be interested to know that the most commonly read survey of Android piracy rates was written by a former Apple financial analyst who left on good terms to become a market researcher, and he based his findings on a survey conducted by a company that sued Google for breach of contract.

I'm also hoping for a HD version It all depends on how well the currant app sales and if there is sufficient interest in the game and in a HD version. Cost is an issue, to develop the HD version and also adding the Ladybug will be expensive, so I'm hoping the app will do well, so that we can justify the extra cost.

The game is basically the same with some small tweaks and some of the heavier memory sapping stuff taken out (3d insects)
The big update for this version is Online-Play, which is great,
Hive shines when played against real people, it is very difficult to create a AI that will ever come close in matching a human pro player of the game.

I'm very excited about Hive Pocket, its wonderful, the pieces are so cute and attract a lot of attention when played in public.
And it's so very easy to just throw the game in your pocket and off you go. The standard size game as some have pointed out is still portable but not easy to just have in your pocket,
and the weight is three time heavier. I'm really looking forward to see how people take to it

Now that is an update! GMT is always one of the places I go while working on updates and I had checked them again just last night before putting the final touches on the update. Missed it by that much. Thanks David!

Forgot to mention that they also said that they signed a deal to make electronic versions of their Commands & Colors games. They didn't say what platform, however. Hoping for iOS.

They said that they'd be making an announcement soon.

Great GMT update, David. Thanks for the heads-up.

Sadly, though, I'm not getting "close" out of any of that. Contacting testers "shortly"? ... asking for help with a tutorial? To me, that reads "months away."

Nope. No sound in the game, never has been. I imagine if it had swoops and swooshes and shuffling sounds, most folks would just turn it off.

I must not be most folks. I actually like the swoops, swooshes, and shuffles in Ascension and play with them on. I'd think that hearing a shuffle in a fast moving deck building game is very helpful to hear.

I'm one of those who plays with no sounds ever.

Too often I forget to turn things off or silence my iPad and then get discovered when trying to game surreptitiously.

Has anyone tried out Dungeon Crawlers yet? Looks like a turn based "dudes in a dungeon" born-digital board game. Maybe something along the lines of Space Hulk or Descent?

(Bythe way, where's the best place to ask questions like this? Is there an iOS forum or something?)

To install pirated apps in iOS, the device needs to be jailbroken. Not everyone can be bothered with that, and, until recently, iOS 5 wasn't jailbreakable for A5 devices (the iPad2 and the iPhone 4s).

To install pirated apps in Android, you just have to go to settings and check the "Unknown sources" box.

As an Android user myself, I can tell you that I spend about $5/month on iOS apps, and I have never spent a single penny on Android apps.

You can argue and be insulted as much as you want, but the developers clearly agree with me.

There's stuff from articles to help support arguments, but some of the statements are also "blanket statements" too. Closest thing I can think of is when someone on BGG asks where he can get images of card components or of a board and many just blatantly assume he's out to PnP everything to circumvent paying for the real deal.

I've talked to well over a dozen And users who don't bother with rooting their device. Among the ones who participate in online forums (and in the future, those who've I've talked to IRL), some root their And to get much better battery life (ie turn off certain OS tasks, and they've gotten up to double their usual battery life out of it). Are they pirating stuff? I don't know.... it's possible. I've also talked to many Iphone users who don't really spend any $$ on apps either. They use their Iph to make calls, GPS, text, address book, internet, and that's really it. Maybe they spent $5 in the 3 years they had their Iph for a better GPS device. Parents may spend $ here and there for their 5 to 10yo children to keep them calm.

As for you, if you've never spent $ on an And app, either you're pirating And apps, or just get them on iOS instead. Either way, I'm not going to infer anything more than that, nor do I care.

Someone posted a comment here on BGG (in one of these blogs) saying that while it's still there, it's gotten ALOT better. It does use a thing where apps are checked against an online server to authenticate it's been purchased, which some people will object, but it makes things much better. Will post the link if I can find it

FWIW, Android still draws in intrigue, including those from Apple itself [shrug]

As far as questions: a lot of general stuff gets posted in the Computer-Based Boardgaming area. Not every thread is an iOS thread, but a general inquiry like the one you had would eventually get responded to there.

Your first link is an opinion piece, containing zero actual facts concerning the levels of Android piracy.

The other two links both concern the case of a single app, Facefighter, where the developer claims 70 pirates for every genuine sale. This claim is absurd; at the time of his writing his app had been selling around 20,000 copies a month for five months, so he was claiming seven million Android users had pirated it. This equated to 3.5% of all active Android devices.

In case you're not willing to believe that his figures are fabricated, he also claimed a 3:1 piracy rate on iOS. Based on the number of active iProducts, the known jailbreaking rate and sales of his app at the time, this would mean there were more pirated copies of the iOS version than there were jailbroken devices to run them on.

In short: you don't have any facts.

I googled "android piracy rates"... and just gave the top few links. I could just keep going down the list until you run out of objections.

Either way, I'm hardly an iOS fanboi. In fact, I love google and all things associated with google. I'm just no so blinded as to think that android is as moneyable of a platform.

Hello Fellow Gamers,

I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks to author of the article for mentioning the game A Dice Strategy Board Game - ROY G. BIV.

As an indie developer it is nice to see there are people actively looking out for our indie games and bringing them to the attention of their communities.

I also wanted to take a second moment to thank all you loyal board gamers! I had thought that the love for this genre had died once MTV came into existance, but it is great to see so many fellow board game lovers sharing their passion. I hope I and other developers can give you games in the future that rival those of the past that brought you to the genre.

Most indie developers and designers never make a penny from their games. It is really a matter of how much do you lose on it. Most of us do it simply because, like you, we love a genre of games and want to share them with other gamers. For the vast majority of us, the only reward is going to be the friends we make playing and the enjoyment others get out of playing what we designed.

Which gets me to my point. While I don't want to suggest you shouldn't play major publisher games, they don't rely on you like indie developers do to try, test, review, & help improve their games. Rather than ask you to buy anything, I, and most indie developers would prefer you simply give our games a try, give them an honest review, and if you like them, help spread the word so you have more people to play against when you do play them.

While major publishers have sales goals and quarterly reports, indie developers oftentimes are making games for only one reason:
Because it exists in their mind and they want to share it with you.

Thank you again for the mention. I hope you all enjoy the game. Please help keep the original game ideas flowing by giving other indie developers' games a try and a review when you get a chance.

From all of us developers, thank you so much for playing our games.

See you all on Game Center.

Toucharcade is blocked for me at work. Does the game have a crash issues on all platforms or limited? I'm playing on an iPad 2 and the game looks pretty attractive. Are people reporting issues on that particular device?

Probably close to never. They don't put nearly enough resources in their MtGO implementations to even think about things like iOS. They don't seem to care all that much. Or they do care, it's just that they manage their programming teams horribly.

The current MtGO 3 client is absolutely horrid and the UI is from a past generation, but they haven't updated it (not for lack of trying). No web client either (or hell anything other than Windows). The server is also dated as hell and error prone, especially on any edge cases.

See the reddit thread for more history:
http://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/nc4xk/why_does_mtg...

It may be possible that they'd port DotP over, but that's not really Magic (the rules are similar, but not exactly the same.)

I've just downloaded and had a chance to play a game that scratches an itch from way back. If you ever played an obscure game for the TRS-80 that was called, "Conquest of Chesterwoode", you wouldn't be far off in guessing what this game was about.

The game is called Divine Right (nothing to do with the board game), and the developer is at www.rivisoft.com.

For those who are younger cool, this game is like a fusion between 'Panzer General' and 'Battle for Wesnoth'. Each turn you can do a host of activities in order to build up your economy, bolster your castle defenses, and create armies in order to ultimately defeat your opponent.

The game has both hotseat and AI capability. The AI is aggressive and good for a challenge, but I really like that you can play hotseat against another human (I have an iPad to play on.)

The controls are fairly responsive, but some of them are small and I'm glad I don't have fat fingers. the graphics are also a bit small,... again I'm glad I have pretty good eyesight :-)

Two things I hope that the designers come up with in upcoming versions are a way to save a battle, and a way to design a scenario.

Aside from that, the game is simple, but quite a joy to play. I hope you feel the same.

Here is a screenshot:

Update from Codito Development on the touch arcade forums:

Quote:
Hi folks,

We just wanted to let you know that the long overdue second update for Tikal is in the Apple pipeline and should be released soon. We think it addresses most, if not all, of the concerns raised in the past few months.

It also provides a significant enhancement to the AI and replaces OpenFeint with Game Center for achievements, leaderboards, and turn-based multiplayer!

Thanks for all your support and patience!

- Codito Development

PS. Multiplayer will now require iOS 5, and supports 2 to 4 players with possible AI in the mix.

PPS. Updates for Puerto Rico, Tigris, Ra, and Medici are still in the works. Stay tuned!

The lack of equivalent Android announcements is just disheartening.

On iOS many people actually pay for their apps, while on android almost every app is simply stolen.

Believe it or not, this affects the motivation of developers to bring their games to certain platforms.

As an Android user, I take offense. Furthermore, just because many of the apps on the Android are free, doesn't mean they are 'stolen'. How exactly can one 'steal' apps on the Android any easier or more frequently than on the iPhone?

Can the mods please create a special, pinned thread where Android users complain about not having any decent IOS apps? I feel their pain, but must we relive it every time an IOS app is released?

Wonder when we'll see actual MtG on iOS...

Wizards doesn't seem to have realized that there are books and games on computers yet.

The five separate versions of Magic for PC and console would like to disagree with you.
