Fantasy Flight Games' Line-up for April 2012

U.S. publisher Fantasy Flight Games has announced its April 2012 release schedule, which consists of two big announcements and the usual assortment of expansion packs for its line of Living Card Games.

Announcement #1: FFG will release a card game called Infiltration from designer Donald X. Vaccarino – he of Dominion fame – with the game being set in the cyberpunk world of FFG's Android. Here's a description of the game from the publisher:

Quote:
It is the future, and beneath the flickering glow of the sprawling New Angeles skyline, immense corporations seek every advantage in the burgeoning field of synthetic humanoid technology. On the brink of a revolutionary innovation, CyberSolutions Inc. is poised to become the next global powerhouse, threatening the profits of well-established conglomerates Haas-Bioroid and Jinteki – but unfortunately for CyberSolutions, security at their New Angeles branch has just been compromised.

Set in the dystopian future of Android, Infiltration is a tense card game of futuristic larceny in which two to six players take the roles of thieves, competing to steal valuable secrets from a highly secured corporate facility.

The most vital information lies deep within the complex, but each step inward takes you farther from escape. Worse yet, corporate mercenaries are closing in! How long will you push your luck as you avoid security patrols, surpass rival thieves, and try to download the most data before the building is locked down?

Okay, calling that a description of the game is misleading, but FFG hasn't said anything about the game play yet. Expect a series of previews related to that in March or April when the game nears release.

We've come a long way
from a boy and his dog...
Announcement #2 is the introduction of a new faction for Dust Tactics, and while normally FFG releases one or two items for this game each month, for April FFG is unloading a half-dozen items related to its newly unveiled "Sino-Soviet Union" faction all at once. Here's the list of what's on offer:

-----Dust Tactics: Operation "Zverograd"
-----Dust Tactics: KV47 Walker
-----Dust Tactics: SSU Airborne Transport
-----Dust Tactics: SSU Command Squad
-----Dust Tactics: SSU NKVD Battle Squad
-----Dust Tactics: SSU NKVD Close Combat Squad

More on the Sino-Soviet Union and the components represented in these expansions in this FFG news item.

Finally, here's a round-up of expansion packs for FFG's line of Living Card Games:

-----A Game of Thrones: The Card Game - Valar Morghulis
-----Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game - Ebla Restored
-----The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - The Long Dark
-----Warhammer: Invasion - Fragments of Power

Eh, I've had a bunch of fun with KB and think that early dismissals are based somewhat on the possibility of players being screwed in the early game through poor play (due to them not knowing what they're doing) and the game play seeming dirt simple at first with the chances for clever plays and combos not being obvious. After a half-dozen plays, I feel like I have some basic knowledge of how to play well, and I think that there's more to catch on to in terms of blocking opponents and playing well now in anticipation of future draws.

Your initial board placement and choices about which bonus tiles you go after have a major impact later in the game; to the point where, as Eric points out, a player can feel done-in by the half way point.

Our 4p game last night had 3 experienced players within 6 points of one another, the 2 trailing the leader saw where different choices could have given them the win. The 4th player was completely new and 20 points behind. It was a perfect example of experience in the game proving to be king.

...and back on topic...

It's not the best description per-say Eric, but certainly they use the phrase "push your luck", which makes me think of Diamant, instead though the board will be pre-built and some other elements will come into play to shut players down. The timer is quite reminiscent of Dungeonquest. That's a fascinating combination of elements to me.

I agree about Android, but this is pure FFG extruded product. Another underdeveloped deck-builder but, instead of buying someone else's media property and tacking it on, they've just used an in-house setting to save even more money. It's everything that is wrong with FFG circa 2012.

So you've formed an opinion on the game a full 3 months before its release? And not only that, but that one game's supposed failures is somehow representative of FFG as a whole (though in ways I don't quite understand)? Nice. shake

PS: "circa" does not mean what you think it means.

To be fair, I have not tried it. I want to, although as I said the urgency of that feeling has been tempered due to all the lukewarm reviews. You moved the needle to the right a little.

The term is 'inductive reasoning'. If you can't see a pattern to the last 18 months of FFG releases, I don't know what to say. FFG has moved from interesting original well-developed big box games that were great values (TI:3, Descent), to big box games that were underdeveloped and property-driven whose components didn't quite justify those big boxes (Runewars, Horus Heresy), to cheap card games entirely driven by media properties. Instead of rededicating themselves to proper game development, component quality, and innovation, they are now extruding product.

No one hopes they'll return to their former glory more than I, but let's call a spade a spade. Right now my only hope is that WizKids either steps in to fill the gap or pushes FFG out of its doldrums.

I'm not a Donald X fanboy, not by a long shot. I think the high regard in which Dominion is held here is just bizarre. It's a well balanced game and it started a new genre of game so kudos for that but, well, 'meh' pretty much sums up my feelings towards it.

So when I saw the initial reactions to Kingdom Builder from Essen combined with my bias for seeing a Donald X design fail because, well, Dominion is so popular why!?! I wasn't hopeful about the game. At all. Then I played it and I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with Eric.

It's a simple game, sure, but even one play was enough to let me see that there was more to it than meets the eye. I did okay in my first game and won my second, although it was very tight between me and the guy who won the first game. As Eric says your early placements and decisions about which scoring cards to go for when and which special tiles to pick up have a huge effect on you later in the game. There are opportunities for blocking but also for the opposite, for deliberately leaving spaces that are useless to your opponent open so that he's forced to play there rather than somewhere more helpful.

All in all I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the game and how much it does reward planning and careful placement. It's certainly one of the best gateway/filler games that I've played in a long time.

Inductive reasoning classically involves some sort of data. The term you're looking for is "knee-jerk reaction".

I know what to say!

That is "You have no idea what you're talking about"

Lets look at this key line here: "Another underdeveloped deck-builder"

This proves you haven't actually read anything about the game in question, because it sure as hell isn't a deckbuilder.

I won't believe it until something is said. I just can't believe they'd pay all the money to buy it, then do nothing with it. I hope the silence is just a pre-cursor for the announcement of a 2nd edition or something.

With the second season of HBO's Game of Thrones series opening in April (the 1st), I was really hoping (and kinda expecting) to see some sort of a release for Battles of Westeros, to encourage sales whilst the show features in mainstream media.

The 10 episode show would obviously run into May and even the 1st weekend in June, so perhaps a release may occur then, pushing back any announcement by the same time period, or should we have heard by now?

Wishful thinking or would the above make sense?

Well, it was in March releases. Now they're saying 2nd quarter.

I would love to see some premium Chaos in the Old World painted figures, similar to what they just released for Arkham Horror. But my guess is with Games Workshop the chances of that are slim to none.

My friend is building out his own via the GW miniatures, but he's paying a pretty penny doing that.

Looking forward to hearing when the Star Wars licensed games are coming out.

Out of this batch I'm most excited about a new faction for DUST. It'll add some more depth to our games.

With Infiltration, I'm getting a little burned out on deck builders. In fact in our small gaming group, one guy flat out refuses to play. We'll have to see if this brings something new to the table and makes it worth the purchase.

I was eagerly awaiting the Star Wars card game until I realized that I really dislike The Call of Cthulhu card game (despite being a HUGE lovecraft fan). I'll wait to see some reviews.

All of that being said, Blood Bowl Team Manager Expansions and for the love of all things unholy, DO SOMETHING WITH BATTLELORE!!!

I love the Android setting. I enjoy the original game and the thought the "Free Fall" novel was fun. A new card game based on the property is cool. It's great they're developing they're own stuff (although they've done well with licensed properties).

Although I think the FFG Bullpen is great, it's nice to see a different author on one of their games.

I really don't have any "autobuys" anymore with the budget getting smaller, but FFG games always deserve a look.

Huh ?
The only "deck building" in Infiltration is that you have a DECK of location cards and you lay 12 of them randomly on the table each game in order to create the "BUILDING" you are going to break into in order to steal data files.
Is that considered "deck building" ?

As a 30-45 min game, is Infiltration likely to be a Silver line game? I'm just trying to guess on the price point to see how interested I am in this one.

You don't need to guess. It's 34.95$, as appears here.
And aside from that, the "Silver Line" brand is gone.

Thanks Raviv - I thought their Silver Line brand had just gone to bigger square boxes with a slightly higher pricetag - I could have sworn blind those new size boxes said Silver Line on them but having just gone a checked a few they've got the corner logo thing that looks very much like their Silver Line logo but you're quite right, it doesn't say Silver Line. That's a real shame

Isn't your last claim controverted by the recent release of a third Death Angel POD expansion? Am I missing something?

I didn't say they dropped all the Silver Line games. They just stopped calling them "Silver Line".

I think it's pretty safe to say that Battlelore is dead.

I won't believe it until something is said. I just can't believe they'd pay all the money to buy it, then do nothing with it. I hope the silence is just a pre-cursor for the announcement of a 2nd edition or something.

Well they still have their Westeros Battlelore variation, but seeing as they clearanced out all of their Battlelore supplements during their holiday sale, I just don't see them releasing more products in this line.

They did say something when BoW came out. Most relevant part (emphasis mine):

Christian Petersen wrote:
We were concerned that the classic BattleLore base game, as had been created by Days of Wonder (“DOW”), was going to be troublesome on a production level. We did not, to be honest, expect it to essentially be non-manufacturable, as is the case.

Later in that article he alludes to "a solution", which I think is safe to assume was the re-purposed French copies.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think we'll see a second edition, or if we do, it won't remotely resemble the first.

I don't think the French versions are much of a solution. A solution to clear out the warehouses, maybe, but not in making the game economically viable for FFG, if that was their intention.

I wouldn't mind a 2nd edition that included fewer units (most over on the Battlelore forum already expect this, if it's released), not already glued together, etc. As long as it's Battlelore and keeps the core C&C gameplay (which I'm certain it would, with some FFG touches, such as the Battle Savvy rules they introduced in their expansions), I'd be happy. Being able to somehow play 1st edition with 2nd edition would be icing on the top, but not really expected.

Letting Battlelore die without finding some type of manufacturing solution nwould be probably my greatest gaming disappointment. Don't kill my hope, man!

That was my first thought, but then I remembered all those reviews for Kingdom Builder.

I scored 11 points in my third game of KB. LOL...yes 11 points. But I recognized it was from my horrible first move. Kingdom Builder gets better for me every time I play. I agree with the sentiments above and I look forward to the inevitable expansions.

It's called "cutting your losses".

Reading the article Matt linked, it's entirely possible that FFG was only after the game engine to apply to a different licence, or didn't research carefully enough to realize the actual manufacturing costs of a reprint (whow lower demand means lower print runs means higher per-unit costs). The retail price point is $150 per copy, which FFG sees as unreasonable. OTOH, FFG is working on new release, so they're hopefully doing *something* with it.

Perhaps but you very specifically referenced Infiltration when noting that you were burnt out on deckbuilders; thus implying very heavily that you weren't interested in the game largely because it's a deckbuilder. (Note: this may or may not be what you actually meant but it's certainly what you said.) But Infiltration isn't a deckbuilder at all (at least not from the description of how it plays on the FFG website). As such I think that raviv's response was entirely understandable.

Wolvendancer...what?! WizKids filling the gap? What?! shake WizKids? FFG is doing a phenomenal job lately. Just off the top of my head: Gears of War, LOTRs card game, Blood Bowl: Team Manager. All wonderful, wonderful games that came out this last year. Coming soon this year: Nexus Ops, Wiz War, Merchants of Venus, Fortress America. Huuuuge names in gaming. Doldrums? I don't think so. We're living in the golden age of gaming and FFG is leading the way with GMT games not far behind. WizKids though? That was WAAAAY off!

Oh! I forgot to mention as a reminder that they just got the Star Wars License with 2 games already planned for this Spring. Serious?! Doldrums? Man, FFGs is kicking ass right now! Geez! robotrobotrobot
