New Game Round-up: Details on Schmidt Spiele's Grimoria, More Nürnberg News & Ticket to Ride: Germany?

• Schmidt Spiele editor Thorsten Gimmler has passed along a few details about Grimoria, that publisher's German version of Hayato Kisaragi's Grimoire. Like the Z-Man Games version, Grimoria plays with up to five players, unlike the original release from Japanese publisher One Draw.

More substantively, says Gimmler, "We have four new character cards (quest cards) and two new treasure cards (item cards). We have hard cover books inside. We changed two spells and did a complete new game board, which will make it easier to see which player selected which spell. We also have five little figures (acrylic glass) inside. I also changed the end of the game so that it ends after a fixed number of rounds. Those are most of the changes."

If you enlarge the press image below, you'll see the changes on the new game board, with spell icons laid out on the board and the player figures placed on the spells that they chose – which should make it easier to resolve all the spells since you don't have to remember who chose what.

• Designer Wolfgang Kramer mentions on his website that a new edition of Heimlich & Co. is coming with a new "Top Secret variant" that results in a "significantly shorter playing time" with otherwise no changes to the game play. That said, Heimlich & Co. wasn't on AMIGO's list of Nürnberg 2012 releases, and Kramer mentions that the game uses the new AMIGO design, so this might be something for the latter half of 2012.

• French website Tric Trac reports that Stefan Feld's Trajan has been picked up by Gigamic – which is somewhat bizarre given the rest of the Gigamic line, but perhaps this move foretells future shifts toward game-ier releases from the French publisher.

• Spanish publisher nestorgames has released Hello, Dolly!, a two-player game themed around collecting one's sheep but without any cloning-based game mechanisms. Missed opportunity here...

• German publisher intellego holzspiele has two new titles from Reiner Knizia – who has more than a dozen on the Nürnberg 2012 Preview so far – those games being Gravitas and Singapur. No real details on the game play, but gosh darn if those intellego releases aren't purtier than all get-out.

• I've seen mentioned on a couple of German gaming sites – such as Spielbox here and Ratgeberspiel here – a new game titled Zug um Zug Deutschland, aka Ticket to Ride: Germany, with the description mentioning that this will be a full game and not an expansion pack along the lines of the recently released Ticket to Ride: India/Switzerland. I've asked Days of Wonder for details on this release, starting with whether it really exists, but given DoW's previous responses to information leaks ahead of an official press release, I expect little more than a "no comment".

Update: And I've received the official "no comment" from Mark Kaufmann at Days of Wonder. So now we wait...

Well, we'll see about that, won't we? Personally I can imagine the desire – from both the public and the publisher – to have a less fiddly version of the game set in the German landscape.

I hate setting up those scoring tokens for Marklin. But a full game when they've started the map collection?

I get that. Though I have played "easy" Marklin several times with newer players - completely leaving out the passenger bits and playing it as vanilla TtR. It worked well enough. I'm sure the map isn't close to being optimized for that, though. It will be interesting to see how it differs.

This could easily just be a reprint of Marklin, with graphics that actually match the TTR series. My biggest complaint is that all the train cards of the same color look different. So annoying.

That would be amazing. But given all of the map boards, it would also be heavy... like really heavy.

Edit... Oops... Thought you were referring to a potential TTR big box.

we use 12mm dice. a d6 covers all values except for one, berlin i think. for that location, we place the 7 token on top of the die. easy-peasy.

A signifcantly shorter Heimlich & Co.? It's hardly the most epic game as it is. Why does Kramer feel like it needs condensing and what will he do to achieve this?

As for TtR: Germany, perhaps Days of Wonder think the franchise doesn't sell well enough in Germany and need a better intro game than the fiddly Marklin can provide.

We assign setup tasks to each of the players upon opening the box. Setup takes less than three minutes when everyone gets to it. Many hands makes light work.

That would mean they could also drop the critizised train cards and making new where each colour has identical cards...

Although a new Ticket to Ride is always worth checking out, I'd love it if they came up with a slightly less fiddly version of Marklin. It's still one of my favorites in the series (and is the best TtR for 5 players, IMO).

I really love TtR Märklin and don't understand the many complaints it gets. I have no problem with the initial set-up: just put the merchandise tokens properly in the box and it won't take long to place them on the board. Putting 30-40 dice is not that much less fiddly! The card illustrations are really beautiful, imho better than standard TtR/TtR Europe and the problem of the less friendly color palette is solved after a couple of games, when everybody realizes that they can easily look at the big symbols in the corners of the cards.

That said, I don't think that Zug um Zug Deutschland is a reprint of Märklin. The description at Ratgeberspiel is quite intriguing:

Quote:

What I don't get is why are they calling it a "Jubiläumsediton", since there's no special anniversary approaching, neither for TtR Märklin, nor for the TtR series. They also imply it is a brand new map of Germany and a complete game with new characteristics like mountains, seas, hills, lakes, big and small cities.

I hear ya. My biggest complaint about TtR is the simplistic drawing of cards mechanic to match colors to lay down lengths of train to try and make impossible routes only to be bested by 100 points by someone's best friend's wife who plays this silly game nonstop and should compete professionally.

And run on sentences. I hate that about TtR too.

Agreed. Given that the name Marklin is synonymous with toy trains, it seemed like a perfect celebration of the company to have different trains across each motif. I enjoy that detail.

However, mixing a feature that appeals to a different niche hobby (specialty trains for the toy train enthusiasts) with a more fiddly gamer mechanism (the passenger rules) may not have been an ideal marriage.

Note also, TTR: Marklin was released in 2006 as ownership of the Marklin company was changing hands...
WIKIPEDIA wrote:
Märklin (MÄRKLIN or MAERKLIN in capital letters) is a German toy company. The company was founded in 1859 and is based at Göppingen in Baden-Wurttemberg. Although it originally specialised in doll house accessories, today it is best known for model railways and technical toys. In some parts of Germany, the company's name is almost synonymous with model railroads. On 11 May 2006 Märklin was taken over by Kingsbridge, a London venture capital company. Märklin filed for bankruptcy on 4 February 2009, but on 5 February 2010 announced a return to profitability.

It strikes me as a worthy effort to rethink the German map with a non-Marklin theme. Perhaps we will see some new Essen destination tickets if we ourselves have Essen destination tickets for Spiel 2012? I can't help but take the 'no comment' from Mark Kaufman as a good sign.

So we're still waiting on the possibility of a U.S. publisher then? I want, but I already got burned by high import price of Castles of Burgundy right before release...

They also imply it is a brand new map of Germany and a complete game with new characteristics like mountains, seas, hills, lakes, big and small cities.

TtR with Catan characteristics...similiar to Settlers of America but the other side of the story...

No, thatjust be crazy talk.

Too bad Grimoria is only German. Im definitely less than satisfied with my Z-Man version.

I hear ya ... Although I don't mind the Z-Man edition (It's not like it was an expensive game, remember), this one just puts it to shame ... Would love to know what they changed spell-wise.

Agreed. I would like to have this one over the Z-Man edition.

*raises hand* yes, count me in on that sentiment. looks better and contains more characters (which means more scoring options/paths to vp) and refined spell choices.

The rules of the new Knizia games published by Reiner Knizia can be found at intellego's page. The page is in German. You must only click on the pictures.

Really? I know I can get to the Gravitas and Singapur pages by clicking on the game name or game image, but I see no rules on those pages.
