THE CREATIVE GAMER - Game Bit Storage Obsession (aka Are You OCD Like Me?) - Part 1/3

In the last year I've been having fun pimping out games, upgrading them and looking for better storage solutions depending on the needs. In the course of doing this I've actively been seeking out a variety of game bit storage solutions, in particular small boxes of different varieties, plastic and otherwise.

I should back up a BIT and say that I'm OCD about game bit storage. As soon as I get a game and punch it I always have to bag each player's pieces separately, then bag all of the various chits, cubes, meeples, etc, separately as appropriate.

And, I'm one of those people that has to come to the rescue of a friend who comes over with a game and doesn't have it 'properly' bagged. I will pull out my box of baggies (yes, I have a special box just for baggies) and my Hugo's Amazing Tape (for keeping cards together) and get them all set up. Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Nicely organized!

The box of baggies!

What irks me more than anything is doing a trade or purchase of a used game, have it shipped to me, and have bits and cards all mixed together and floating around in the box! Don't any of you other gamers care about your bits like I do?!

<breathe in, breath out, breath in, breath out....phewww>

Alright, I'm ok now. So, let me show you how far I go to get my games organized.

BAGGIES
Acquired from: www.boardsandbits.com
First, here we have the standard array of baggies that I'm sure you already know quite well (and if you don't, well, look CLOSELY, this is important):

Common sized baggies + Hugo's Amazing tape

The key is having a variety of baggies for different sizes and amounts of components. You can never have too many sizes. In the picture above, in front from left to right we have: 2"x3", 3"x3", 3"x4", 4"x4", and 4"x6". I find these sizes are usually sufficient for a majority of bagging needs. Also, you can see two rolls of Hugo's Amazing Tape (1") - one in blue and one in purple - that I use mostly for holding decks of cards together. Hmmm, I'm getting low, I better buy some more!

Baggies in use:

Stone Age components, each in appropriate sized baggies.

Games like Stone Age are really good to use baggies in - there are a good number of components but not too many of each. Setup and cleanup are pretty easy with baggies for this game.

SMALL PLASTIC CONTAINERS
Acquired from: Dollar Store (via friend)
So, baggies got me by for a long time. However, one day my 'friend', Chris, gave me about 30 nice, clear, plastic containers that he found at his local Dollar Store - 10 for $1. Rectangle boxes! And round boxes! With nice snap-on lids! I was hooked! Or rather, I soon would be. (Yes I blame him for my game bit storage obsession, although I probably would have stumbled into on my own anyhow. It's always nice to have a scapegoat...)

Round and rectangle bits containers.

I will bag components if it makes set-up easier. For example in Agricola each player colour gets its own bag. However EVERY resource is in one big bag together and every animal is in one big bag together.

It's good to keep cards together though just because it's annoying to scrabble around a box to get all the cards together, turning them up the right way etc etc...

I will admit for Agricola that having the player colors in separate baggies might be more convenient for setup (the sticks are sometimes hard to get in and out of the little compartments). But having everything in one Plano box just appeals to me for some reason.

(shudder) Having every resource in one big bag just puts me on edge...robot

Thing is, with the resources we just dump them onto the table in one big pile anyway like some kind of Harvest Festival celebration.

I don't like baggies for the Agricola pieces. I've been using Flexatop FT-14s. Unfortunately Storables doesn't carry them any more, so I'm going to need to make a bulk purchase of at least 100. Unfortunately at that price they're still somewhat spendy.

Having them in snap open boxes makes setup much faster.

The nice thing about these boxes is that with no lip/lid, they stack very easily inside the game box and don't take up a lot of space.

We do the same with Puerto Rico. We normally play with 4, so we keep all the 4 player counts (VP, "workers", etc.) in baggies, seperate from the "extras".

We also do this for Catan. We own the 5-6 player expansion and Seafarers. We always keep the 4 player Seafarer setup we like to normally play seperate from the others in one of the expansion boxes, so we can set up without having to sort, count, dig out the number chits, etc.

Storage is not only about keeping things in good shape, good storage can make game play setup and cleanup go easier - even to the point where others who might not be as "OCD" can help with either - "Just put all the "workers" in the baggie marked '4 Player' while John, you put all the victory point in that baggie labelled '4 Player VP' - thanks!"

That's a good point about labeling the baggies - I don't usually do that but for some games I think it would definitely help, partly for the reason you stated. Also, I sometimes forget what goes back into which baggies when putting it away. My technique in these cases then is to pile all the bits together on the table, then lay an empty baggie onto each until I figure out which component gets which baggie. Then, everyone just helps bag them up.

My concern with writing on them is, if you write on the baggies then decide to change up the storage later you have to cover up the writing to use it elsewhere - not a huge deal, but something to consider.

Those are nice looking boxes - they are similar to some other ones that I will be talking about in one of my next two entries. I call them the 'treasure chest' boxes - they look almost exactly like yours except they have tabs that lock into place in the front. They are my favorite box of choice currently but I can't find them anymore at Michael's (going to check again today actually)

Where do you order them from? I might be willing to split part of an order with you and pick them up @ GameStorm.

EDIT: When I looked yesterday Michael's had them in stock again. They come in 5-packs for $3.99 which is a little spendy, but with a 40% off coupon they're a little more reasonable. I like the fact that some small pnp games (i.e. with tiles or dice) fit into them nicely.

A personal tip from an OCD game sorter as well.

If your game is going to contain lots of baggies (Agricola, I'm looking *RIGHT* at you), those baggies will take up varying amounts of space due to air being trapped in them.

At first, my solution was to take a hole punch and put a small hole in the baggie. Then I looked at the fence sticks, and at the baggie holes, and started to get concerned.

My ultimate solution was a little more elegant. I snip the very smallest corners possible off of the bottom of the baggie. Just enough to let air out, but not big enough to let any pieces through. When I'm done with the game I roll the baggies up and squeeze all the air out, and things store *much* neater.

I've since gone through and snipped most of my baggie-heavy games this way.

That's a very good idea! Though sometimes I like air in the bag as a cushion for the components. If its something more fragile like more brittle plastic figures (Merchants & Marauders ships), the air can help keep them from breaking when sliding about.
