iOS Release: Food Fight iOS

Name: Food Fight iOS

Device: iOS Universal

Launch Price: $3.99

Players: 1-4

Multiplayer: Hot-seat, online realtime, online asynchronous

Seller/Developer: Playdek

iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/food-fight-ios/id493347343

Release, update, price tracking info on Appshopper.com: http://appshopper.com/games/food-fight-ios

Based on BGG Entry: Food Fight

VGG Entry: None yet.

Notes:
We don't know if Playdek is following Days of Wonder's marketing playbook, but we did not see this one coming. I mean we knew it was coming, but didn't know it was imminent! Anyway, it is kind of hard to believe that this is just Playdek's second stand-alone iOS app. It certainly would appear at a brief glance to tick all the boxes and maybe even achieve a standard in production value that Playdek has already set with its world class release of Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer. We'll be eager to try this one out immediately! So until we do I'll leave you with Playdek's own well done and informative description:

Playdek wrote:
Food Fight iOS makes mobile gaming tasty!

In Food Fight iOS players recruit fighting entrees and side dishes to build a battling meal for the ultimate food fight. Choose delicious and deadly entrees that will devour the competition; enlist Major Weiner and Private Pancake to team up with Mean Burrito, fortify your troops with side dishes and condiments and prepare to do battle; but beware! That sound you hear might be the Dog! And the Dog is always hungry...

Food Fight iOS brings the original card game to life and featuring the original's Draft mechanic. Food Fight iOS also presents iOS specific features: a quicker Boot Camp mode and an innovative Campaign mode. Play against others online or via hot-seat, or against the AI in offline mode.

The epic Campaign mode let's you battle across the land, defeating the Snack King Mascots in order to build your ultimate End Game Army. Your End Game Army had better be delicious, as you'll soon face the dreaded Disposalor in the Under Whirled in the final battles for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

PLAY OFFLINE
• 1-4 players
• Hot-seat versus 1-3 others
• Versus 1-3 AI players
• Campaign Mode

PLAY ONLINE
• 2-4 players
• Asynchronous play
• Find and create online games
• Player Profile to track your record

FEATURES
• Instructional tutorial
• Maintain and save multiple games
• Boot Camp and Draft Modes
• Game Center achievements in offline (non-campaign) mode

My kids love playing this game with my wife and I.

Even with the card version in hand...I may be tempted to get this, too...for trips and such!

Really well done. It has a good tutorial and the digital rule book to read. Online play appears to be just like Ascension (although none of my buddies have accepted my invite yet). It has an entire campaign mode and a slew of unlock able avatars for online play.

I have spent 15 minutes with it and am extremely impressed. An easy recommendation for 4$.

Also, this is the first time I have ever played Food Fight so I am a total newbie.

It looks really slick! The only thing I'd like to see Playdek start doing is implementing true multitasking, ie- remember where you were if you close the app.

Anyone else notice they have two buttons at the bottom, full of stars, which do nothing? DLC, anyone?

Though I had no clue at what I was doing during my first play, I still had fun with the awesome artwork and by recognising a couple of sound fx borrowed from Ascension.
I need to get down to the tutorial to get the rules right.

Exactly. I have no interest in this theme or game, but playdek made Ascension so well I bought Food Fight just because of that.

I deleted it because this thread is not about Summoner Wars. It was an experiment, because we don't often delete comments.

Well, like I said, it was an experiment and your post just happened be the first example of something we can try to control or just let lie. Our only tools for moderation are either attempting to steer the comments or to delete posts. We don't have forum lock, as we are not BGG admins. Our controls are no more sophisticated than any other BGG bloggers.

I'm sorry it had to be your post and the one that followed. I can't promise there will be any consistency or even further experiments. Please accept my apologies.

You may have intended it to be a joke about your disappointment that Food Fight wasn't the Summoner Wars release, but it really did read as a troll post...at least, that was my inference from it.

As the one who responded to said comment, I considered it a joke. At worst, perhaps a light-hearted expression of disappointment. However, as this comment is not directly related to the Food Fight application, will this be deleted? As might be the case with the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th posts under this topic. If this is an experiment of the powers of redirecting the flow of a topic, it appears to have redirected it in a rather, different, fashion. However, the intent of this post is a joke, right?

To be relevant, this seems like an intriguing game. The aspect I'm most interested in, and would like to hear more about, is the single player campaign. Is it similar to the Assassins Creed game, or what?

I respectfully disagree, as Summoner Wars release date jokes have been a constant thing around iOS forums in BGG, becoming almost an internal meme.
Though I have to agree on keeping the subject of the thread at FoodFight, which is indeed a undoubtedly a great release, I believe there was no need for a drastic measure such as deleting someone else's post.

Picked this up because I'm a fan of card games and was impressed by Ascension. It's worth the $4. Still getting a handle on the game, but after first couple games had fun, even though I lost.

The company that released the amazing Ascension, and has left us all greatly anticipating Summoner Wars, releases their next effort, Food Fight, and we're not allowed to mention their upcoming game? This is somehow considered off-topic?

I know others have already expressed their disappointment about this "experiment" in censorship, but I really felt the need to point out to the moderators and to other readers that this is very uncool.

Also, apologizing in advance for having no consistency and telling readers to expect posts to be deleted as "experiments" is very disheartening.

I am a big fan of this blog; I get that it's new to BGG and am willing to chalk this incident up to growing pains, but I urge the moderators to keep their rules and more importantly, their sense of equity, consistent with the rest of BGG.

Again, the only reason I feel this is worthy of a rant is because I generally am such a big fan of the iOS Blog.

Points taken Kevin. And I appreciate that you enjoy the blog.

Btw, my apologies were for the deletion of the posts, not for the future. We've been pretty laissez-faire since we started and I believe we can keep it that way in the future. You are not likely to see much, if any, further post deleting.

It plays slower than Asencion IMO. When playing online you will spend a handful of turns back and forth drafting before the play bit. I understand it is no difference than buying cards in Ascension (and I don't think games will take more turns than Ascension to play) but it makes it feel slower.

I am very much enjoying it. Played the campaign for an hour or so today. Haven't gotten many/any multiplayer invites yet do can't discuss that too much.

Ryan, you can also try the Boot Camp mode in the games you create, either offline or online then you just get 9 random cards and the game starts immediately...

Oh I know, but if I play I want to play the drafting "full game."

And like I said, it isn't like the game is really slower. It just mentally feels a tiny bit slower. I do think that Food Fight will be a much more challenging game for me to play a bunch of simultaneous games.

In Ascension I have like 18-22 games running at a time and am able to do decent. I don't think I can do that with Food Fight. The cards you draft are far more dependent on previous choices - significantly more than buying cards in Ascension.

It's unlikely these will ever be available in the iOS version. Even adding them as unlockables would cause a shift in the age rating of the app, and we like seeing the current response from people who are enjoying playing this app with their children.

awww too bad not even the possibility of a lockable toggle to turn them on and off. Owell I completely understand, either way a fantastic job was done, i'm now contemplating picking up the physical version

The draft game is definitely the better way to play when playing with an experienced group of players. Drafting well is the best way to combat the random ordering of your troops. Paying attention to what you're passing (and what is being passed to you) is just as important as the cards you are choosing to keep.

Food Fight is a very different game from Ascension. It's very likely that players who really enjoy Ascension won't feel the same way about Food Fight (and vice versa). Food Fight will likely be more attractive to the casual gamer as its theme is very well integrated with the game mechanics.

Food Fight isn't as well suited to asynchronous play as Ascension was. It still possible to play that way, but it's not ideal. Much like Gabe has suggested for Ticket to Ride, it's probably best to think of the asynchronous feature as a save mechanism so you can come back to a game later if you can't complete it on one sitting. Food Fight has more interleaving of decision points, plays better with more players, and requires much more player memory during drafting to be played effectively. We had the technology for asynchronous play, so we included it. One advancement that's probably worth noting is that we've developed something we refer to as "simultaneous asynchronous" play. So during the draft and plating, everyone can make decisions at the same time. And if someone falls a little behind during drafting, they can make multiple choices in a row to get caught up. This type of play isn't possible with the iOS 5 asynchronous play feature, and we'll be able to leverage this in Nightfall, Agricola, and several other titles we haven't announced yet.

We tried to offset this by focusing more on the local play experience. We added achievements and a lengthy campaign that features new abilities for each of the 19 boss characters. We won't be adding a campaign to every title we publish.

Here's something that might tie everything together and provide a bit of Playdek history.

Does anyone know the connection between Ascension and Food Fight prior to our involvement with either of those products?

I was not expecting much out of Food Fight because I did not really like the demo of the game at GenCon 2011. But, because of the quality of Ascension and the other games coming, I gave it a shot.

So, I literally drained my entire battery on my iPad today playing throught the campaign plus several other sessions. In my book, that means you guys knocked this one out of the park. I really like it.

Allowing the catch up bit is a good idea and I imagine will make up for some of that downtime.

But it is tough to hear much else over the name dropping of Nightfall and Agricola. rool:

Both games I am super anxiously awaiting!

Like another poster mentioned - kudos for supporting gaming with families. I hate missing out on promos in the digital space but I understand not wanting the rating to shift.

Referencing BDSM with eggs -- NOT Okay with the ESRB

I sort of remember it from the tutorial ... you're building your decks for the final-final-final showdown. I think.

At the end of the campaign, you have to beat the final boss three straight times: breakfast, lunch, dinner. I think.

The info is at the end of the "How To" of the Campaign tutorial. You are choosing cards that you will craft into 3 End-Game Armies to fight The DISPOSALER (the final boss of the campaign).

As someone who plays his ipod touch 4G in places where I have no wifi, is the game playable offline? Is the AI any good? Or is there only a campaign mode for single player games?

there is indeed offline play, the AI seems acceptable, it's beaten me a few times as I've begun leaning card interactions, also there seems to be 3 difficulty levels for the AI

That's exactly what's going on. Should also be noted that you can click on the icons for each specific meal in order to assign the acquired card to a particular battlefield meal (I didn't realize this until all 24 of my breakfast slots were filled)

The final boss (a Giant Garbage Disposal) isn't too hard to beat. I just drafted a bunch of pancakes for each meal and stacked 5 of them each battle. Backed with the right instants, you should win handily.

Sadly, I haven't seen that many people with this game on my friends list. So, if anyone would like to play, my GC name is "Whisperhand"

I can so your connection in our log, and then an immediate disconnection. I can see you have one game going, but I assume that was an invite and you've never been able to connect? I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is, but I won't be able fix it until tomorrow.

That is a bit premature isn't it? If the rest of us have no problems with it, it is not a generic fault but a bug that only rears it's head in certain circumstances and am sure it can be fixed if you contact Playdek...

This is correct (or it seems like a pretty safe assumption). I do have the red little red "1" badge, which I didn't do anything to bring about. So I'm guessing it's an invite.

If you could look into that would be great. Even better if you think you might know what's up.

Excited to try this game. My friends seem to gravitate towards games which are simple to learn, and this seems to be a good fit until I teach them something with a little more "meat".

On a side note, I'm new to the site and the board game culture in general... Bought Carcasonne for iOS and got hooked. I'm eagerly waiting for more games to be released for iPad, and to add to my board game social contacts .

Gary, I just made it as far as the lobby for the first time. I think it's all going to work out.

And I do see an invite waiting for me. I'll see if I can act on it.

Thanks for your concern; if you don't hear from me again, though, please assume that it all worked out for the best.

WOW! I'm lovin' this game! Well worth the $3.99!!! I liked it so much i bought the table top card game... with that 3 promos!

Having a blast now with the Campaigns.

Can anyone help me understand these cards:

1) Seppuku Sushi - Remove next troop from your army... joins your serving.

2) The Invader - Copy Target Instant that was played this meal... may choose new instant.

3) Frankenspud - Put your current troop into discard pile... Copy target troop in your army... becomes troop this serving.

THANKS

Your army stack is the randomized pile of cards that you plated. Seppuku takes that card that you would use for the next serving and adds it to your current troop. Usually, this means you won't plate a troop for the 5th serving, but hopefully you've already locked up the meal by then. Seppuku works best if you manipulate which card you'll be adding (either by waiting for the 4th serving and remembering which card you have left, or by using Grilled Cheesus or Buckaroo).

The Invader can copy any instant played at the current meal, by you or any of your opponents. You can choose a new target means that you can choose an opponents instant to copy and then apply it to one of your own troops. Note that if you play Vlad the Clampire during plating, he wasn't played during a meal, so he isn't a valid target to copy. In this case, hold onto Vlad until the first serving so you can copy him after you play him.

Frankenspud lets you eliminate one of your current troops and replace it with a copy of any other troop you've played so far this meal. This is great way to double up on a General or Commando Steak. Don't play it on the first serving if you only have 1 troop in play - you'll end up with nothing to copy!

Help us decipher the Campaign Stats screen above?

I know it's a lil too early but... any idea if the Snack Attack expansion is forthcoming?

Not sure where to post this, so I'll drop it here.

I was fighting Vlad in the campaign, and had played Crunchy. I had three sushi, but I can't remember what else. I played Seppuku and the flaming guy, and the app crashed. Now, when I attempt to return to that battle, it loads to exactly 21% and stops indefinitely(current record is 10 minutes). I already rebooted my IPad, and I really don't want to start over. iPad 2, 32gb, wifi only, if that helps.

Typically, there is no memory element at all.

If you are playing 1v1 Draft, you would do well to remember how many Instants you passed to your opponent.

The only other thing is it can help sometimes to remember what troops are remaining in your 5-man army, so you can play your Instants when and where you should. For example, if you realize that you are fighting with your last Lunch troop, you might as well use your Medic Mustard.

These are high level things, tho. Typically you don't need to remember anything.

Thanks,

Can someone explain what's going on after the campaign match? The game tells me to select a card and drag it down, but I'm not sure what the purpose of this is. I couldn't find a reference to it in the rulebook.

You are drafting your "in game army" - after every successful battle, you get to draft a card from those that went through your hand during the battle, to save for the final boss fight.

You can draft into and save to three armies, one for breakfast, one for lunch and one for dinner. There are rules about what you can draft. When you launch Campaign Mode, there is a pop-up, and one of the options is "How To" starting on page 6 explains the end-game armies.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

It seems this thread is being checked so...

Gary,
I think I am currently having the same issues as I had when Return of the Fallen came out.

When I first log in, I cant connect to the server and it times out. I immediately log in again and it connects immediately.
I can not invite any of my game center friends to a game. All I get is open when I go to create a game. No friends list. Mimy has invited me so I know it works.

I think this is related to the fact that I have a large number of Game Center friends. But I am not sure about that. Both of these issues were resolved at the same time with ascension not long after the expansion was released.

Thanks

Hi all!

my apologies for the delay in replying! The scoring is tracked for each battle fought, and we're storing the best five. We're looking at adding an over-all Campaign score and a way to see your best, so you can compare your recent Campaign score with your best. Need to do a little interface work for that.

Currently, it's Campaign Battles.

As to the categories, we worked with Matt Hyra, the designer and we assign point values for

Plating: 200pts per card that you under-plate (if you plate 3 cards = 400 points)- rewards the daring play
Margin: 10 points for every VP greater than your opponent. So, against a Snack King, it’s the difference at the end, if you scored won with 10, and Bernie Colon had 8, you'll earn 20 points
Relevance: You get 10 points for each troop that matches the Battlefield
Chips: You get +75 points per Chip won and -50 points per Chip lost.

A little esoteric, I know. We're looking at making it a more user friendly.

Cheers,
George

Hey- thanks for the reply, George!

Does that mean in one meal, i plated 0 cards and hence scored 1000pts? And that i have never plated a card that matches the Battlefield (Relevance=0)??

Think i'll wait for the friendlier interface; i like what you guys are going with this. thumbsup

Yeah, now with the explanation I'm not getting why I have a 0 Relevance and a 1,000 Plating.

Decent stats but total campaign scores, as well as being able to compare to previous runs would be appreciated. While normally a fan of top individual battles, if these stats are going to be tracked individually it seems like all one has to do is start a battle with no cards and, boom, they've already gotten the top Plating score possible (or maybe this needs to be changed to the least plated meals while still winning the battle).

Hi guys,

Thanks for the heads up, we'll look into the numbers to be sure we're doing the math...

It keeps the best score displayed, and doesn't overwrite until you exceed the score. We'll definitely put some insight into this.

Cheers,
George

So, I've been playing Ascension for a while and the tutorial on that game easily taught me how to play.

Even after my second time through this tutorial, I'm still a bit confused. I actually think it is the "ze" and "zees". It just messes with my brain.

There are a couple of How to Play videos and the actual manual here on bgg. I'm going to check them out as I really want to play this game.

I understand the need for flavor, and it seems I'm the only one that has problems learning this.
