iOS Review: Food Fight

Brad Cummings

The Stats:
Compatibility: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Universal
Current Price: $3.99
Developer/Publisher: Playdek/Cyrptozoic
Version: 1.0.1
Size: 32.1 MB
Multiplayer: Local Pass and Play Multiplayer, Online Multiplayer.
AI: Yes, various difficulty levels
Itunes link: Food Fight

Conclusion:
Food Fight is interesting to examine because it is so different than Ascension. It features the same great online multiplayer system but the nature of the game may not give it the same competitive longevity. It is a new app with a new focus. Food fight, in my opinion, plays much better on the iPad and things can feel cramped on the small iPhone screen. Food Fight exceeds in two key areas, first it takes this humor based game that may be hard to get to the table and packages it in a quick playing iOS version. I really feel that this gives the game more life as lighter fare is well received on iOS. Second, the app features a repetitive but interesting campaign mode. This campaign mode is very thematic and is a good example of what can be done to expand single player gameplay.

Rating: 3/4 Great

I picked it up because I figured I'd give Playdek a shot no matter what they did. The interface is slick, the multiplayer is perfect, the tutorial was helpful and the presentation is fantastic.

Too bad the game itself is so incredibly underwhelming.

Still, looking forward to Agricola and Summoner Wars and whatever comes after those. Hopefully Food Fight is just a brief moment of bland mediocrity before they start hitting us with some AAA titles.

Nice example of a slick implementation elevating a mediocre game (for my particular tastes anyway). The campaign mode is surprisingly addictive.

I've always been a big fan of card games, and I've wanted to get this forever. I'm definitely getting the hard copy now.

The game is a bit random, but as with games like Kingdom Builder or any game where you can choose some of the outcome, you have to make judicious use of the synergies of the cards. Yes, sometimes you'll get a crappy hand, but maybe your opponent or you will fight the dog.

If you're looking for a perfect information game, go away, this is not for you. This is for people looking to have fun with a game that's got a little more wiggle room in the luck department. And sometimes that luck swings your way! I've won when I thought I'd surely lose, and I'd lose when I'm surely won.

The ONLY thing the tutorial didn't cover was the addition of yumminess if you have troops of the same meal one after another. I'm still not sure how this works, but I'm still coming back to this game on my iPad again and again! I hope they release the expansion as well!

P.S. I'm not a paid rube, nor was I prompted to do this. I've written very few reviews, but I felt that this deserved something.

Yes, it's not asenscion, and thank goodness. I love Ascenscion, but sometimes I was General Chicken and Private Pancake to bring home the after dinner mints.

:-)

No doubt... excited to try online but wary with no timer implemented. The 10 minute timer is one of my favorite features of Ascension.

Like others, I bought it for the Playdek name alone. It's a very slick app for a decent card game. I'm anxiously awaiting anything else Playdek has on the way...first day purchases for me! I think they've earned it.

Picked this up this weekend, as others have said, simply on the Playdek name. Played it quite a few times both on and offline and although the game is pretty light for my tastes, the app itself was slick enough to keep me coming back.

Funny enough, as much as I played it I never noticed the campaign mode

I'll have to check this when I get home!

The campaign mode takes a good game and makes it sweet. It feels like the true bread and butter of this game, and I hope it will be a recurring theme in incinerator.

The game isn't bad, but definetly not as adaptable to IOS as Ascension was. Still great job by Playdek, and I'll likely get my moneys worth playing it for a bit.

This game sucks. Tried it for five minutes and said, "That's it? My high number beats yours?" Deleted and refunded.

I'm getting tired of seeing all these 3/4 reviews for weak games. This guy gives 'Caylus' a 3/4 and this too? Laughable. I'm close to unsubscribing from the IOS thread. This happens way too often. If this game said 'Age range 5-8 and it's 3/4 for that age range', I could understand.

It's what he does. Just shrug and walk away; trust me, you'll be happier that way.

Agreed. I'm really enjoying the campaign, and the gameplay gets a little bit deeper each time with the addition of the new special-power cards. Some of the combos are great fun.

This is a light game, to be sure, but very well done. Worth the price for the campaign alone.

The game is nice. In my opinion, the AI is far to weak, I haven't lost one match yet - against all AI and I'm a newbee. And I'm wandering of the long-term motivation. Apart, the implementation itself is really great.
But when I think back of the first version of Ascension (without expansion and a bit weaker AI) - I was totally bored of it and now I play it every day!

One question at Brad & Co: when will you switch your rating to 5 possible stars (like at Apple or Amazon). At the moment you could also use 3 stars 'cause almost everything is 3/4 (what I understand). If it's perfect, than it's 4/4, if it's weak then it gets 2/4 or 1/4. But there's no big difference between those last two.

I also bought on the first day because of the Playdek name, and am glad that I did. It is quite a different game from Ascension, and those that pick it up expecting more of the same will be quite disappointed.

While it is in its essence a case of trying to get the higher number than your opponent, there is a lot of fun in trying to put together the right army for the battle. The randomness of which opponents you will fight and the order of which your cards will be played means that even your best laid plans may still go astray. Laying in bed last night playing a two-player game, the hardest decision I had to make was whether or not to add bacon to the army, as if I have to fight the dog I will be toast.

It's good fun, and definitely worth picking up. I love the smooth interface and I don't have any problems playing it on the iPod Touch screen. Am looking forward to what Playdek puts out next!

I would also suggest that the scoring system be changed. possibly even to no rating system. and letting the review speak for itself.

As for Playdek, i'm very suprised that the timer options weren't included in this game for 2 reasons.

1. Apparently one of the major reasons for the timer in Ascension was abandoned games lasting forever on the server, and to a smaller degree people were requesting it.

2. Playdek has meantioned that this game is better suited to realtime play or close to. With the timer options this could be enforced by me setting up or joining a 10-20 minute game.

As it stands I haven't played a realtime online game, because every game i've started or joined, the other players are taking ages, sometimes days to take a move.

This could possibly also be taken as a knock on the game itself (not the implemantation) as the people playing online with me, just don't seem eager to play the game.

Good news! You can unsubscribe without anyone being worse off for it. And, it's free! Talk about a win win.

Yeah a timer really needs to be added before online can even be played... tried tonight and it failed miserably.

Yeah, I don't see this one being a smash success on the asynch front, especially if played in the draft format.

Which is fine, really. The campaign and real-time multiplayer are still winners.

Fun game, nice iOS implementation, good sounds and music. Impressive and nice price. My teens like it, too.

Had some trouble with multiplayer - need to try it some more. Games were dropped frequently for me - and on wifi.

Agree with others that th campaign is great fun!

I can't say it better. Average original game, but very nicely implemented and with a campaign mode that, for some reason, I can't put down. Weird (in a good way)

Well, I played the campaign and I have to agree that the implementation is good... but the game itself is a weak 4 out 10 at best, I'm very surprised that they actually decided to implement it. Maybe it's actually for kids? Would be nice if they'd add such a remark in the future...
