About the term gamer's games, future game purchases, rooting for Finland and maybe some other stuff.

A while ago I had this conversation with this über-geek(or that's the way he saw himself) about our hobby. I just happened to mention that I play board games and he was intrigued. He asked what sort of games, and I replied with something like this: "Oh well, I've been playing lots of 7 Wonders and King of Tokyo lately." The über-geek laughed at me and said with a grin: " Oh, so you're not a real gamer. I should have known, after all, you're a girl. Those aren't gamer's games."

I've used the term gamer's games frequently myself and now I've come to hate that term. To me, a gamer is a person who likes board games and considers them to be his/her hobby. To me a gamer's game is not a game that has to last 6h and has to have plastic miniatures and a theme about politics or war or space exploration. Some of us gamers just happend to like the lighter games. To me a gamer's game is a game that that has an unique style or game mechanics, and it's not Monopoly. ( Even though I respect those few people who actually like monopoly, even though I don't really understand them).

After my conversation with the über-geek I felt like I wanted to hit him in the head with my Mansions of Madness box, even though I would never do that to my precious game. His wooden head might dent the box.

Sorry about the ranting.

Now on to much nicer topic. Games I've been drooling over. I've been trying to get my fiancé interested in getting Agricola but haven't succeeded in that yet. For some reason he isn't interested in farming... So, I came up with this idea, that maybe if I introduced him to another Uwe game first, he might get interested in other works by the same designer. That worked with Alan R. Moon.

At the Gates of Loyang! That's my great idea. I could have gone with the bean trading, but I'm not so keen on that.

I've also been looking into Walnut Grove, or Carcgicola as I call it. It's not an Uwe game, but I though that maybe the theme would suck him in! Or not. Don't really know. Id like to get that game anyhow because I'd like to support Finnish designers. I'll eventually give Eclipse a try, even though I'm not so interested in the space theme.

I've been very happy to see Kimmo Sorsamo's Kairo on the Hotness list. Even though I won't be buying that game, because I already own Tori, which is besically the same, but with a more interesting theme to me. I'm not really into games with Egyptian theme. Seems there are so many of them.

I was watching the Nürnberg Toy Fair pictures and there are some cool things coming this year. Like Riff Raff! Way too cool. And of course the new cards for Dixit are always welcome. But there were many other interesting upcoming titles, we'll just have to wait and see for more info. And I actually thought this year was going to be dull.

Happy weekend to everybody. I'm at home with a fever, so won't be going to any game nights

What, plastic miniatures? Heresy! Gamer's games are only those with wooden cubes. Maybe wooden cones, too. Mansions of Madness is not a proper gamer's game, it has way too much theme and chrome and fun for that!

And space exploration isn't a theme for a gamer's game, either. It has to be about trading or shipping or crafting or manufacturing or spreadsheets.

Oh, and another thing - games about war like Small World et. al. aren't gamer's games either, they're wargames.

At one point he started ranting about how every true geek plays Magic: The Gathering, which I didn't listen because I had to put meeples in my ears as earplugs...I guess no one told him that Gamers don't play card games either...

Kairo and Tori share the basic game mechanism but Queen Games has developed Kairo so much that from what I've heard it's actually quite different from Tori. The theme of Kairo is definitely a disappointment but probably more widely acceptable for the general gaming audience.

The whole "gamer's games" idiocy aside, I'm kind of surprised he was able to even get that part out through the bloody mouth I hope you gave him for the statement of "Oh, so you're not a real gamer. I should have known, after all, you're a girl." What a Neanderthal. It's guys like that that give the rest of us a bad name.

As far as getting your fiancé into Agricola, have you tried Le Havre? It's got relatively similar mechanics (much more so, at least in my opinion, than Loyang), it's also by Uwe, and the theme (processing and shipping goods) might appeal to him a bit more than the farming. That being said, it can also be somewhat difficult to find, at least here in the US (I have no idea about Finland), so if you can track down a copy, definitely pick it up. (It still hasn't dethroned 'Gric as my favorite Uwe game, but it's coming darn close, and for at least one of my friends it already has.)

I love sci-fi, but for some reason the theme of eclipse did not appeal to me either. The races feel very generic or contrived. The game however, is amazing! Try it for sure

I did actually show him a video and some pictures of Le Havre, but I'm not sure what his reaction was. It was "Hmm, I'm open for this" or "Just say hmm and she stops this discussion shortly".

So, working on it

At our club these type of games get referred to as 'gloomy medieval dudes' (see a recent LoB geeklist) but it's all in good spirit.

As it happens, Eclipse made a big impact at said club this year, going straight in at #7 in the 2011 'pop chart'. Having said that, Agricola is at #5

For what it's worth, here's is the full top 40 - missing the top 5 as I write - just for dramatic effect

As someone who has a blog entiteld "On Gamer's Games" I think I agree with the others that stated this guy was a real winner, mixing sexism with stupidity. That being said the only game you mentioned in this post that I would consider gamer's games are Agricola and Mansions of Madness. Gamer's Games are generally those with a bit of heft and meat to them, it is not meant to imply that those who do not play them are not gamers simply that only gamers would play and own them. I could see non-gamers or very casual gamers playing things like 7 Wonders or Kings of Tokyo.

Yeah, I understand your point of view. I guess I just don't label my games as gamer' games and the other stuff(or non-gamer friendly as one might put it). They're all the same to me. I guess the real issue here is that I was offended by that person who thought only his opinions were right and mine meant nothing. But I'm glad that person is not a friend of mine and most likely I will never see him again.

Small World is not considered a wargame by many wargamers...

Aside from that I echo the consensus on stupidity and sexism.

Sometimes I think the term "gamer's game" means a game that only 27.5 people know exists, 11 people claim to have played it, and three people own it. This kind of game usually goes for $274.66 on ebay minimum....

By the way...anyone who think they are cool/attractive/hip because they play obscure games is oblivious to just how clueless they are. Very few women or men (that are not already members of the BGG) for that matter will ever utter the following words "you have a large gamer's game collection therefore I want to have your children." whistle

Usually mentioning boardgames is akin to a dose of depro provera.
