How I got caught by my girlfriend

Last week I bought Thunderstone and Thunderstone: Wrath of the Elements during work, opened them here, filled the expansion box with all the cards, left the original box in my drawer and took the expansion box with all the cards home.

As I expected she immediately realized that I bought a new game, she has a real talent in spotting new boxes.

Now the only problem is that we work at the same place and yesterday while she visited my desk I opened my drawer by mistake and about 1 centimeter of the corner of the Thunderstone box was visible for just one second. Of course her superhero-powers kicked in immediately and she realized that I bought 2 games. Wish you had seen her face...

And then you pointed out that she is wrong, you had *not* bought two games.

Everyone knows expansions don't count.

My wife has that same power of detection, when it comes to games that is. I believe it is a completely selective ability by the way but that is a topic for another time. For me it usually starts with, "did you get a new game...?" Now this is a trap, as most of you know. The real question is do I fess up right then and take the aggro for the game or do I risk it and say I have had it for a while thus risking the 'liar' prosecution?

Sometimes my Spidey Sense fails me and I choose poorly. shake

For a future secret purchase, here's a line you can use (this is only a one-time thing...so use it wisely):

About a week before you buy a game, say something like, "Oh, did I tell you? I won a copy of ____ from a BGG contest...lucky, right? Want to go to dinner?"

Or, if you've been caught with a newly purchased game, you can say:

"What, this? Oh, I won a contest on BGG and got a free copy...cool, right? Want to go to dinner?"

Wait for the next expansion to "explode" onto the scene. "Thunderstone: Wrath of the Girlfriend"

My wife is able to figure out that I've bought a new game with only the subtle hint of me bringing home a big bag with a game in it and saying "I got a new game!"
Then she asks me about it. And sometimes helps me unwrap cards and punch out tokens. Then she'll play it on our next games night.

She's pretty great.

Sounds like it's time to let her go. If you have to give up one of your two favorite hobbies, give up the one that gives you crap for your other hobby When was the last time your boardgame hobby gave you crap for your girlfriend hobby?
