There is a lot to say about Nightfall and it is becoming a polarizing topic. Nightfall is a very complex game, more so than any previous Playdek release. The tutorial in my opinion could use more context ("we bought this because, look, it can chain with this") but in its current form it does go through turn structure and how each choice works. The app teaches you its interface but it cannot account for the steep learning curving inherent in Nightfall itself. Strategies take a while to master and even now I do not always know why I am losing (I know why I am winning, it's because I am awesome!). Again this game just takes time to learn, I am not sure if it is the apps fault persay but perhaps a campaign mode could teach strategy in stages much like a video game does.
Nightfall does excel in many areas. The interface I think is actually quite genius. There is a lot of information to manage in Nightfall and they did quite a good job. The online multiplayer system is very well implemented this time around. The ability to see more information about each game available and who is playing is very helpful. The option to view other's profiles also adds an element of competition to the game. To become good at Nightfall will take more work than something like Ascension but it cannot be denied that Nightfall is a polished and well designed iOS board game.
Rating: 4/4 Excellent design, complex game
